Research says going to bed angry makes it worse


A good night’s sleep may reinforce negative memories in the brain, researchers said on Tuesday, lending scientific credence to the time-worn caution against going to bed angry.

Slipping into slumber while holding on to a freshly-formed bad memory engraves it in the brain, making it harder to shake off later, a team from China and the United States reported in the journal Nature Communications.

Ebonyi State begins seizure of foreign rice


The Ebonyi State Governor, David Umahi, has set up a taskforce to move into various markets and confiscate foreign rice.

Umahi announced the setting up of the committee on Monday in Abakaliki, the state capital, during a ceremony to commence the construction of an ultra modern Kpirikpiri market in the capital city.

Obanikoro returns N134m to EFCC, vows to repay N450m in 2017


A former Minister of State for Defence, Senator Musiliu Obanikoro, on Monday returned N30m to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission. This brings the total amount of money he has returned to the EFCC to N134m.

A source at the EFCC said, “Obanikoro came on Monday and presented a draft of about N30m. Initially we did not want to collect it because it is small compared to what he is supposed to have given us. However, the legal department advised us to collect it.”

Obanikoro had in October returned N104m to the commission. The ex-minister, who returned to Nigeria last month after spending about 15 months in the United States, was accused of receiving N4.7bn from the Office of the National Security Adviser under the leadership of Col. Sambo Dasuki (retd.).

PDP CRISIS: Makarfi, Sheriff issue jail threats against each other


Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) leaders were still tearing at one another yesterday.

The two factions of the leading opposition party threatened imprisonment against each other for laying claims to the leadership of the troubled former ruling party.

The Ahmed Makarfi-led Caretaker Committee said it would send Alhaji Ali Modu Sheriff to prison for parading himself as the party’s National Chairman.

The Sheriff faction replied that it had enough evidence to sue the Makarfi faction’s members for alleged contempt of court.

Another social crisis looms after Boko Haram - Buhari warns


President Muhammadu Buhari on Tuesday raised the alarm that another social crisis looms in the country if the two million Nigerians displaced by the Boko Haram sect currently in refugee camps were not properly resettled.

According to a statement by his Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity, Garba Shehu, the President spoke at a meeting he had with the world leader of the Tijjaniya Islamic Movement, Sheikh Sharif Ibn Mohammad, at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.

He was said to have lamented the destruction of public institutions in the North-East by Boko Haram terrorists.

50kg bag of rice now N8,000 in Ebonyi, CBN says


Central Bank of Nigeria Tuesday in Yenagoa said that a 50 kg bag of Nigeria rice is selling in Ebonyi for N8,000. This was disclosed by the Acting Director, Corporate Communication, CBN, Mr Isaac Okoroafor, in Bayelsa State.

Speaking at a sensitization workshop for the CBN Anchor programme for farmers, he said: “We should eat Nigerian rice provided for by the CBN Anchor Programme; 50 Kg of local rice is now N8, 000 in Ebonyi. 

Already, the Abia Government has ordered rice from Ebonyi for Christmas,”. He said that the Anchor Borrowers Programme for the promotion of Agriculture has set the country to begin exportation of rice by 2017.

Federal Government pegs girls’ marriage age at 18


To end the prevalence of child marriage especially in the North, the Federal Government has pegged marriage age for girls at 18.

Marrying off girls below the age will now be frowned at by the government, Vice President Yemi Osinbajo said yesterday.

Osinbajo gave the directive yesterday at the launch of a strategy document and campaign by the government against child marriage in Abuja.

The Enugu State Police Command has launched full scale investigation into the suicide of a student of University of Nigeria Nsukka. The victim identified as Tobechukwu Okeke, a final year student of Agricultural Economics Department from Awgu in Enugu state, was found last Sunday hanging with a rope tied to his neck on the ceiling fan hook.

Reason WHY NCC asked big operators to raise data tariffs


The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) approved a new “floor plan”, or minimum pricing, for data services by mobile operators “to address market distortions, unhealthy price wars and value erosion that could threaten the going concern of the service providers”, according to reports from TheCable.

In a letter to the big operators, the commission had directed that the floor plan for data should be 0.90k/MB effective December 1, 2016 “pending the finalisation of the study on the determination of cost-based pricing for retail broadband and data services in Nigeria”.

Nigeria's Super Falcons defeated their South Africa counterpart 1-0 to qualify for finals at the ongoing Women’s African Cup of Nations (AWCON) in Cameroon.

House of Reps want fuel sold at N70 per litre


The House of Representatives on Tuesday urged the Petroleum Products Prices Regulatory Agency (PPPRA) to review the current price template for Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) with a view to reducing the price to N70.

This followed the adoption of a motion sponsored by Rep. Abubaker Fulata titled “Urgent Need to Review the Petroleum Price Template”.

Moving the motion, Fulata expressed dismay over the circulating rumour of a possible hike in the price of petrol in the country.

President Muhammadu Buhari has feared that those blowing up pipelines were not ordinary Nigerians. Buhari said this due to the sophistication and employment of high technical skills in their actions.

The President who was in doubt about the sophistry of the perpetrators felt that the militants were getting help from highly skilled engineering personnel who were inclined to using their skills negatively.

According to him, going into the sea for almost 70 kilometres to blow pipelines with ease were not ordinary.

Nigeria to start exporting rice in 2017, CBN says


Before the end of 2017, Nigeria will begin to export rice to other countries, the Central Bank of Nigeria has said.

The Acting Director, Corporate Communication,  CBN, Mr. Isaac Okoroafor, said this on Tuesday during a sensitisation/awareness programme for farmers in Bayelsa State on the apex bank’s Anchor Borrowers’ Programme.

Okoroafor, who said the CBN’s ABP had started yielding fruits, insisted that with the progress so far recorded by the CBN through its agricultural financing policies, the country would begin to export rice by next year.
