Nigeria's poor outing at the on-going Rio 2016 Olympics continued as three of the country's women wrestlers all crashed out in round one of the freestyle event in their different weight categories on Wednesday.

Drugs Scarcity Hits Official Aso Rock Clinic


Despite the N3.87bn allocated to it in the 2016 Appropriation Act, lack of drugs and other essential medical items have crippled operations at the State House Medical Centre, The PUNCH has learnt.

Buhari don't get military pension, gratuities unlike others - Presidency


President Muhammadu Buhari yesterday said he has not been receiving military pensions and salaries as former head of state since he assumed office in May last year.

According to him, he did not receive pensions due to him, being a retired military officer, unlike many of his contemporaries.

The President was reacting to a report circulating on social media which alleged he has been receiving double payments from the federal coffers.

Lagos State Govt to install 13,000 CCTV cameras to fight crime


Lagos State said yesterday that plans are underway to deploy 13,000 Closed Circuit Television (CCTV) cameras across the state, additional 6,000 streetlights and security sensors to enhance surveillance and crime prevention.

The plan, the government said, will ensure safety of lives and property of residents.

Commissioner for Information and Strategy Mr. Steve Ayorinde and other top government officials, who broke the news, assured residents that the CCTV would become operational from October.

Eight Female Egyptians Presenters Suspended ‘for Being Overweight’


Egypt’s state broadcaster has suspended eight female television presenters because it says they are overweight.

The Egyptian Radio and Television Union (ERTU) gave the women one month to lose weight and said they could return to work when they had an “appropriate appearance”, local media reported.

Only female anchors were removed from their posts, leading women’s rights groups to condemn the move as sexist.

The Nigerian Army has freed Ahmad Bolori,one of the three persons declared wanted by the military on Monday. Salkida, Wakil and Bolori A family source confirmed to newsmen around 10:30pm that Bolori was freed by Defence Headquarters after being interrogated and found to be innocent of the offence he was accused of. “Bolori was taken from Maiduguri and interrogated in Abuja by the military but has just been released having been found innocent of the alleged offence,” a close family member, Kaka, stated.

It is not yet uhuru for former Imo Governor, Chief Achike Udenwa, as the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, has asked him to account for the N350 million he signed and collected from Fidelity Bank ahead of last year’s presidential election.

The anti-graft agency, which re-arrested him, alleged that he collected the cash in three installments from Nenadi Usman, who was the Director of Finance for the Goodluck Jonathan Campaign Organisation.

A plane passenger cradled her newborn baby in her arms after she prematurely gave birth at 30,000 feet.

The seven-months pregnant Filipino woman, who has not been identified, went into labour unexpectedly a few hours after take-off on Sunday morning, Daily  Mirror reports.

Flustered flight attendants sprang into action and moved her to the front of the plane where there was more leg room.

Ali Modu Sheriff brands PDP Convention As A Huge Joke


The factional Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Sen Ali Modu Sheriff, has described the National Executive Council (NEC) meeting of the PDP which extended the tenure of the Makarfi-led Caretaker Committee by one year. 

He said, the said meeting was in breach of Section 31 (4) of the PDP Constitution, which makes the National Chairman the sole authority with a mandate to convene the NEC.

Sheriff said INEC has not been put on the mandatory three weeks’ notice, neither has he as Chairman been put on one week notice, even if it was an emergency.

United Nations kick off Campaign Against Child Marriage In Northern Nigeria


The United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) on Wednesday advised the Federal and State Governments in Nigeria to pay more attention to implementing laws that protect the rights of the girl child in the society, rather than creating new ones that will mortgage their future.

Country Representative of UNFPA in Nigeria, Ratidzai Ndhlovu, gave the advice at the official launch of the Adolescent Girls Initiative organised by UNFPA in collaboration with the Kaduna State government, where she noted that providing women and girls with equal access to education, is not only a fundamental human right, but a necessary foundation for a prosperous and sustainable nation.

Ogun State | Trader arrested for naming his dog ‘Buhari’


A 30-year-old trader named Joe Fortemose Chinakwe, has been arrested by the Ogun state police command for naming his pet dog ‘Buhari'. This was after after one of his neighbours, a man from Northern Nigeria, filed a complaint that Joe named his dog after his father, Alhaji Buhari. According to Vanguard, after the complaint was made at Sango Police Station, the trader was arrested, detained and would reportedly be arraigned in court today.

Efforts by the police to recover the dog, which they intended using as evidence failed. The trader, allegedly instructed his friends to secretly to kill the dog. Now, appeals by his friends and relations for the police to grant him bail failed as the complainant and his kinsmen reportedly threatened to kill the trader if he was released on bail.

Federal High Court Re-Affirms Sheriff’s Sack As PDP National Chairman


A Federal High Court sitting in Abuja has re-affirmed the sack of Sen. Ali Modu Sheriff as the Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). 

The court presided over by Justice Nwamaka Ogbonnaya, reaffirmed the sack on the ground that the judgment of Justice Valentine Ashi, which nullified his appointment on June 29 has not been set aside or vacated and is, therefore, subsisting.

The court further held that all actions taken by Sen Sherif are null, void and of no effect since the earlier order of Justice Ashi remains binding
