Biography of the New Chief Justic of Nigeria, Walter Onnoghen


Nigerian Senate on Wednesday confirmed Justice Walter Onnoghen as the Chief Justice of Nigeria. This is following the retirement of Justice Mahmud Mohammed at the attainment of the mandatory 70 years’ retirement age.

Onnoghen is remarkably the first southerner to be CJN since 1987 when Ayo Irikefe retired.

FIFA Ethics Committee has banned former Nigerian sports administrator, Amos Adamu, for two years.

The committee has been investigating alleged breaches of its code of ethics by Adamu since March 2015.

It recommended a two-year ban and a fine in December.

Austria Police arrests two Nigerians over forced prostitution


Austrian police have arrested two Nigerians on suspicion of forcing young women into prostitution, in part through voodoo rites.

Police spokesman Johann Baumschlager said in Vienna that the two Nigerians, a man and woman are accused of being part of a criminal organization, human trafficking and engaging in the international prostitution trade.

Amina Mohammed outline agenda at UN


The United Nations Deputy Secretary-General, Ms Amina Mohammed, has said her responsibility at the global body will be to focus primarily on helping the UN Secretary-General, António Guterres, to reposition sustainable development at the heart of the organization.

Mohammed, who made the remarks during her first official press briefing at the UN Headquarters in New York, said while sustainable development was not an end in itself, it is the best way to achieve universal peace.

Acting President Yemi Osinbajo has commended the economic drive of Abia State Governor, Okezie Ikpeazu in the buy Made-in-Nigeria goods campaigns, saying that Nigeria had no business with China if Aba was generally developed.

Osinbajo also said Aba was “very strategic and important to the country in terms of manufacturing and production.”

Abuja authorities arrest 55 prostitutes


Less than one week that Senator Dino Melaye kicked over rising prostitutes on the streets of Abuja, the Social Development Secretariat of the Federal Capital Territory Administration has arrested 55 commercial sex workers during an operation recently.

City News gathered that the operation, which was carried out between 1.00a.m. to 5.00a.m. on Thursday, was part of a ministerial directive to relevant agencies in the city management to purge the city of unwholesome activities.

Increase in BRT fares will impoverish us – Lagos residents


Some residents of Ikorodu on Wednesday complained that the reviewed transport fares of the Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) would further impoverish the citizens of Lagos State.

The residents told explained that the increase in fares was untimely, considering the prevailing economic situation in the country.

They appealed to the Lagos State Government to review the transport fares of the various routes to ease the discomfort being experienced by commuters.

Father-of-two bags life imprisonment for raping ‘girlfriend’


An Ekiti State High Court sitting in Ado Ekiti on Monday sentenced a 35-year-old man, Tope Odeyemi, to life imprisonment after he was found guilty of rape.

Justice Adekanye Ogunmoye convicted him after finding him guilty of sexually assaulting a 27-year-old woman and inflicting grievous bodily harm on her which led to her admission in a hospital.

Minister of Works inaugurates N1.1bn emergency repairs on Abuja-Kaduna Road


Mr Babatunde Fashola, the Minister of Power, Works and Housing, on Tuesday in Kaduna inaugurated the N1.1 billion emergency repair project on Abuja-Kaduna Road.

Fashola, who commended the contractor for completing the project on scheduled, said the project was awarded on Jan. 7 with completion period of 50 days.

The minister, represented by Mr Yemi Oguntominiyi, the Director of Highway Construction and Rehabilitation in the ministry, said the emergency repair was necessitated by the planned closure of Abuja Airport.
