Imo state government sacks 1,400 LG workers – NULGE


One thousand and four hundred local governments workers in Imo were sacked last week, according to the state’s chapter of the Nigeria Union of Local Government Employees.

The chairman, Mr Ndubuisi Uchehara, while confirming the sack on Thursday in Owerri, declared, however, that the union would not confront the state government over it.

He said, “As a responsible union, we only act when the rights of legitimate worker are infringed upon.

Man sentenced to death by hanging for killing his wife with acid


An Ikeja High Court on Thursday sentenced a businessman, Suleiman Olalekan, to death by hanging for killing his 22-year-old wife, Chika Egbo, by bathing her with acid.

Justice Lateef Lawal-Akapo sentenced Olalekan to death after finding him guilty of a two-count of murder and grievous bodily harm.

Lawal-Akapo, while pronouncing the sentence, said, “The defendant is found guilty of murder, the defendant, Suleiman Olalekan, will be hanged by the neck until you are dead.

A student, Kazeem Olajide Bashir, has revealed how he sat for Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination(UTME) for a dozen time, choosing Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-ife, before he was finally given admission in the 2016 UTME.

Bashir, in an exclusive interview with DAILY POST disclosed that he started sitting for UTME, with OAU as his first choice in 2004, and with scores far above 200 ever since then, but never secured the admission.

He said his humble background, coupled with flair for social justice spurred him to put in for Law in no other university but OAU, Ife, which he explained had been his dream university since his secondary school days.

Soldiers Bust Boko Haram Cell In Kogi, Arrest 17 Suspects


The Nigeria Army has paraded 17 suspects arrested during a military operation launched on Boko Haram cells and hideouts of kidnappers existing within the Kogi Central area.

The Commander, Army Records Lokoja, Brig. Gen. Henry Ayamasowei, who paraded the suspects at the Chari Maigumeri Barracks, Lokoja, said the operation launched by the army in the last three weeks led to the arrest of two members of the Boko haram sect while the 15 other suspects were those that have been coordinating various kidnappings and armed robbery operations along the Okene, Adavi, Obajana and Adogo axis of the state.

EFCC to question Melaye, AMMC on Saraki’s ‘invisible’ N125m house


The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) will invite Dino Melaye, chairman senate committee on FCT, for questioning over an “invisible” N125 million building purportedly rented for the senate president.

The commission will also invite officials of the Abuja Metropolitan Management Council (AMMC) for interrogation.

The property is said to be located at Plot 973, Mban Close, off Pope John Paul Street, Maitama, Abuja, rented at N50 million per year on a two-year tenancy, with fees and VAT bringing the total cost to N125 million.

Federal Government Approves $40m For Nigeria-Cameroon Link Bridge


The Federal Government has approved $3.9 billion (N12. 280 billion), sourced from the African Development Bank (ADB) for the construction of the Nigeria/Cameroon border link bridge at Ikot-Efiom in Cross River State.

The project is being funded under the bank’s support for improving relations between Cameroon and Nigeria following the International Court of Justice (ICJ) judgment, which ceded Bakassi to Cameroon.

The project covers ‎part of the ‎link road to between Enugu/Abakaliki highway, which is at an advanced stage of completion. It is also part of the larger Lagos/Mombasa highway.

At least 74 bodies of African migrants have washed ashore on the coast of Libya. According to the Libyan Red Crescent, the bodies were found near the western Libyan city of Zawiya on Monday. Speaking to Associated Press, Red Crescent spokesman Mohammed al-Misrati, said he feared more dead bodies might surface as there are more bodies floating out at sea, but they do not have a means to retrieve them.

The timetable for the West African Examination Council (WAEC) examinations for May/June 2017 has been released. According to the timetable, the West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) is scheduled to start by Thursday 20 of February 2017 and ends on the Monday 15th May 2017.

Rice sellers in Sango Market, in Ado Odo/Ota area of Ogun State yesterday blocked the Temidire end of the Lagos-Abeokuta Expressway for over seven hours.

The traders were protesting against the alleged invasion of customs officials from the Federal Operation Unit (FOU) of the Nigeria Customs Service, Ikeja, who allegedly broke several shops in the market around 12am, in the dead of the night.

A young soldier, Sulaiman Olamilekan, who molested and beat a lady, Ebere Ohakwe, blue-black for 'talking about him' at a military checkpoint in Port Harcourt on Monday, January 31 has been sent to jail.

Nigerian Army confirmed some days ago that the soldier accused of assault is being interrogated. But now, it has come up with a punishment for the young soldier. According to the latest post on the social media account of the Nigerian Army, the young soldier has been sentenced to 28 days imprisonment with hard labour and his salary will be forfeited for those days.
