Yakubu Dogara: Buhari called me last night, we discussed food security for Nigerians


President Muhammadu Buhari on Wednesday evening called Speaker of the House of Representatives, Yakubu Dogara.

Mr. Buhari, who just extended his vacation in the UK called Speaker Dogara on Wednesday evening.

The speaker stated this on his personal twitter handle on Thursday.

IPOB calls Femi Fani-Kayode their fearless friend and in-law


The Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, has hailed a Peoples Democratic Party chieftain and the former Minister of Aviation, Femi Fani-Kayode.

According to IPOB, Fani-Kayode is not just an in-law and friend to the people of South-East but a fearless intellectual and the conscience of the West.

IPOB made the claim in a statement by its Spokesperson, Emma Powerful, after the former minister appeared in Lagos High Court dressed in a Jewish tallit.

Sambisa forest to host 2017 Army Championship


The Nigerian Army has disclosed that the captured Sambisa Forest in Borno State will host the 2017 Nigerian Army Small Arms Championship, NASAC 2017.

This disclosure was made known by Director Army Public Relations, Brigadier General Sani Kukasheka Usman, in a statement made available to newsmen on Wednesday.

Usman said the Nigerian Army Engineers, NAE Corps has mobilized to site and commenced access roads clearance and construction of range and other facilities.

AMCON takes over Arik Air, appoints Capt. Ilegbodu new MD


Asset Management Company of Nigeria, AMCON Thursday took over the management and ownership of Arik Air and appointed Capt. Roy Ukpebo Ilegbodu as the Managing Director.

The airline is indebted to AMCON to the tune of 135 Billion Naira. Operatives of EFCC on Wednesday invaded the premises of the airline and whisked away the Executive Chairman of the airline, Chief Johnson Arumemi-Ikedi to their Lagos office

A statement from AMCON yesterday said : “From all indications, respite may have come the way of Arik Airlines currently immersed in heavy financial debt burden that is threatening to permanently ground the airline. For some time now, the airline, which carries about 55% of the load in the country, has been going through difficult times that are attributable to its bad corporate governance, erratic operational challenges, inability to pay staff salaries and heavy debt burden among other issues, which led to the call for authorities in the country to intervene before Arik goes under like many before it”.

Manchester United debt rises by £71.6m


Manchester United’s net debt has increased by £71.6 million in the space of three months to £409.3m, the club’s quarterly financial report has confirmed.

The report, which covers three months up to December 31, 2016, shows that the club’s total overheads rose 27.1 per cent between September 2016 and the end of the calendar year. This comes despite the new Premier League TV deal coming into effect, with the gains being offset by the loss of Champions League revenue.

United have put the loss down in no small part to the significant drop in the value of the pound since the referendum in favour of the United Kingdom leaving the European Union, citing the strengthened US dollar as another factor.

It’s wrong for people to wish the president died – Minister


Mr Adebayo Shittu, the Minister of Communications has appealed to Nigerians to be calm and resolute in prayers for the quick recovery of President Muhammadu Buhari and his return back to the country.

The minister made the appeal in a statement by his media aide, Victor Oluwadamilare on Thursday in Abuja. Shittu also urged Nigerians not to be too worried about the state of health of the president.

Shittu said that the president, like any other person was entitled to medical check-ups after strenuous official engagements; hence there should be no reason for anybody to make issues out of his health condition.

Christian Association demands update on the ‘full progress’ of Buhari’s recovery


The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) has advised the presidency to release details of the full progress of President Muhammadu Buhari’s recovery.

Buhari is currently in the UK on vacation. He was due to return to the country on Sunday, but he extended his vacation indefinitely.

Femi Adesina, his spokesman, had explained that Buhari’s doctors advised him to stay back to receive the results of a series of tests.

In a statement on Thursday, CAN called on all Nigerians to join hands in prayers for the “quick and full recovery of Mr. President”.

Buhari will roll out palliatives to cushion hardship – APC


The All Progressives Congress (APC) on Thursday assured Nigerians that the President Muhammadu Buhari administration will continue to roll out palliatives to cushion the pains of the current economic hardship in the country.

In a statement signed by its National Publicity Secretary, Mallam Bolaji Abdullahi, and made available to newsmen in Abuja, the party appealed to Nigerians to remain steadfast in the face of current challenges as the government was working to get the country back on track.

Governor Fayose hails Osinbajo over nomination of Onnoghen as CJN


Ekiti State Governor and Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Mr Ayodele Fayose has hailed the Acting President, Prof Yemi Osinbajo for sending the name of Justice Walter Onnoghen to the senate for confirmation as the substantive Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN), saying; “The action of the Acting President has saved the judiciary in particular and Nigeria in general from unnecessary tension.”

The governor, who said Nigeria will only be great if institutions were allowed to operate without interference, added that; “It is better to build strong institutions that will run on their own than to rely on strong leaders.

Look at what is happening in the United States judgment was delivered and no one waited for President Donald Trump to speak before obeying the judgment. That is how things should run in a normal clime.”

The Vice President, Professor Yemi Osinbajo, has said that job creation, economic empowerment and fight against corruption will remain the focus of President Buhari’s administration.

The Vice President stated this while speaking with a selected group of labour leaders, who stormed his conference room following the demonstration by the union at the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja.

Maria Sharapova returns, to play Madrid Open


Former world tennis women’s number one Maria Sharapova has been invited to play at the Madrid Open in May, tournament organisers said on Wednesday.

The event takes place less than two weeks after her 15-month doping ban expires.

The five-time Grand Slam winner has been given a wildcard for the event, which begins on May 5.

It is scheduled to be her second comeback tournament after her suspension for doping, with the Russian set to return to action at the Stuttgart Grand Prix in April.

Head coach of the Super Eagles, Gernot Rohr, has insisted that they are thinking about the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers against South Africa and not the 2018 World Cup qualifying double header against Cameroon.

PDP will return to power like tsunami – Makarfi boasts


National Caretaker Committee of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Senator Ahmed Makarfi has boasted that the party would reclaim power in 2019.

The party chieftain said the PDP would return to power like tsunami.

Makarfi, however, called on members of the party to pray for President Muhammadu Buhari so that he will recover and return office soon.

He made this statement in Abuja yesterday at the public presentation of the report of the party’s Strategy Review and Inter-party Committee.

Chris Giwa says Pinnick behind his FIFA ban


Factional President of the Nigeria Football Federation Chris Giwa has protested against the five-year worldwide ban placed on him by FIFA on Tuesday due to the leadership tussle in the NFF.

The world football body extended the national ban imposed by the NFF Disciplinary Committee on Giwa on May 12, 2016 to have “worldwide effect” on him. The Amaju Pinnick-led NFF board banned Giwa and four others for five years for impersonation and taking football matters to a civil court.

The four other officials are Muazu Suleyman, Yahaya Adama, Sani Fema and Johnson Effiong.

PDP condemns police bribery allegation against Wike


The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), has condemned a police report alleging the involvement of Gov. Nyesom Wike of Rivers in bribing officials of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

The chairman, PDP National Caretaker Committee, Ahmed Makarfi, said the alleged recovered money displayed by the police reminded him of the actions of magicians.

Speaking on Wednesday in Abuja at the submission of the report of Jerry Gana-led PDP Strategy Review and Inter-Party Affairs Committee, Mr. Makarfi said there was no evidence to prove that the money was from Mr. Wike.

Most Corpers posted to North applied for redeployment – NYSC, DG


Director-General of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) Brigadier-General Suleiman Kazure, has assured corps members posted to northern parts of the country of their safety.

The NYSC boss spoke yesterday while addressing 2016 Batch B corps members posted to Niger State, at the orientation camp in Paiko Local Government Area of the state.

He disclosed that 90 per cent of corps members posted to the north had applied for redeployment.

He, however, assured that “the north is no longer volatile.”

Nigeria to acquire 3 Super Tucano Aircraft from Brazil to fight insurgency (Photos)


The Brazil Embraer Defence and Security Limited disclosed that the Brazilian Government has given approval for the sale of its three serviceable pre-owned Super Tucano A-29 attack aircraft to Nigeria. The acquisition of this aircraft by the Nigerian Air Force (NAF) is expected to boost its operational capabilities in tackling insurgence and militancy in the country.

Aside its deployment for Surveillance, Reconnaissance and counter-insurgency missions, the aircraft could also carry a wide array of armaments, including precision guided monitors, advance avionic, communications and sensors. Additionally, the aircraft can also operate in remote and un-paved airfield while the maximum speed of the aircraft is approximately 590 kilometres per hour.

Folashade Fashinas, 34, has been missing from her home in Woolwich since Friday, 20 January. Also missing is her seven-year-old-daughter, Precious Sebastian.

Remains of inspector attacked by Herdsmen recovered in Delta


The remains of a policeman reported missing, following a clash with herdsmen dressed in police uniform on Sunday at Ohoror community, Delta State, was, Tuesday, discovered by locals in the community.

The Sunday clash between the police team and herdsmen was the second in two weeks following an earlier clash, which occurred on January 23.

Man missing since 2012 found in Brazil after traveling largely by foot


A Canadian man missing for nearly five years has been found alive, wandering in a Brazilian Amazon city thousands of miles away from where he was last seen.

Anton Pilipa was last seen in 2012, and flew back to his home country this week after being treated at a hospital in Manaus, Brazil, which he reached while traveling and eating out of trash cans.

Stefan Pilipa told the CBC that his 39-year-old brother, who he called an anti-poverty activist, likely got to South America through a combination of walking and hitchhiking.

Brazilian federal police said last month that the itinerant Pilipa had been seen once in the city of Porto Velho in November, agitated, swearing and unable to speak Portuguese.

Nigerian Army says it has arrested soldiers who brutalised crippled man in Onitsha!


Yesterday we reported the incident where two soldiers were seen brutalizing a crippled man. Nigerian Army has now responded to the viral video, saying it has identified and arrested the two soldiers who allegedly brutalised a crippled man in New Market Road, Onitsha, in Anambra State.

A video showing the officers dragging and beating a crippled man for wearing a military camouflage went viral on Wednesday.

The Director, Army Public Relations, Brig.Gen. Sani Usman, said in the statement released late last night that the soldiers had been apprehended.

DSS interrogates CAN leaders over Boko Haram video


The Department of State Services have quizzed the members of the Board of Trustees of the Christian Association of Nigeria over a video some Christian leaders have been using to mobilise funds for the rebuilding of churches destroyed by Boko Haram.

Their invitation came eight days after the General Overseer of Omega Fire Ministries, Apostle Johnson Suleman, was quizzed by the DSS over his directive to his church members that Fulani herdsmen found on the church premises should be killed.

The PUNCH learnt that four key members of the organisation’s BoT, who are also leaders of National Christian Elders Forum, were quizzed for four hours on Tuesday evening at the DSS headquarters in Abuja, following a video by CAN Trust Fund soliciting funds for CAN to rebuild churches destroyed by Boko Haram insurgents in the North-East.
