Twitter introduces new features to deal with hateful and abusive content


Twitter announced a new set of features to combat hateful and abusive content today. The changes include preventing serial abusers from creating new accounts, a new "safe search" function and blocking potentially abusive and "low-quality" tweets from appearing in conversations.

Twitter's engineering chief Ed Ho,  in a new blog post said;

Photos of the female corp member who died in Bayelsa State Orientation camp


A female Corp member, Olajumoke Deborah Abetesola, died after an asthma attack on Friday, February 3rd, at the orientation camp in Kaiama, Kolokuma-Opokoma, Bayelsa State.

It was gathered that the deceased, who graduated from Lead City University in 2016, passed away at the Clinic Department of the camp after efforts by health workers to save her life failed.

A source, who spoke to THISDAY said the victim suffered her first attack a week after she arrived the camp, but was assisted by her colleagues.

The President of the Senate, Senator Bukola Saraki, has attributed the perennial power outage in the country to faulty privatization of the sector.

Speaking at a workshop on power sector organised by the National Assembly on Tuesday, in Abuja, Saraki faulted relevant authorities for privatising the sector to people who had no idea on how to run it.

The Senate President lamented that in spite of the huge resources committed to the sector in last 14 years, no much improvement has been witness.

James Ibori inspired David Cameron’s statement of Nigeria being ‘fantastically corrupt’ – Anti-corruption Group says


A group known as the Centre for Anti-Corruption and Open Leadership, CACOL, on Tuesday, claimed that the former governor of Delta State, James Ibori was one of those who allegedly inspired the comment of ex-British Prime Minister, David Cameron, when he said “Nigeria is fantastically corrupt.”

CACOL made the remark while reacting to the celebration that greeted Ibori’s return to the country last weekend.

The Oghara-born politician, who was recently released after completing his jail term in the UK, arrived the country on Saturday amid celebrations from people of Delta State.

VP Osinbajo says recession will soon be history

Closure of Abuja airport won’t exceed 6 weeks – Rotimi Amaechi


Minister of Transport, Chibuike Amaechi, says the closure of the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport for repair will not exceed the planned six weeks.

He said the Federal Government will ensure the total rehabilitation of the Abuja Airport runway for smooth operations.

Amaechi, a former governor of Rivers State, acknowledged the hardship closure of the Airport would cause travelers, but maintained that his Ministry will ensure the reopening after due rehabilitation is concluded in six weeks.

A Lagos-based human rights lawyer, Ebun-Olu Adegboruwa, has said that going by the constitution of Nigeria, the country does not have either a President or an Acting-President at the moment.

According to him, the new letter transmitted to the Senate seeking to extend the powers of the Vice-President, Yomi Osinbajo, to function in as President in acting capacity has not been read on the floor of the Senate.

The Speaker of the House of Assembly, Yakubu Dogara, on Tuesday blamed the perennial power outage being experienced in the country on previous administrations of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP.

Speaking at a workshop put together by the House of Representatives to find solution to the recurrent power failure in the country, the Speaker said successive administrations from 1999 to 2015 spent nearly N3 trillion on the power sector with little success recorded.

The lawmaker observed that the period PDP held sway, the more money spent on the Power sector the more darkness Nigerians experienced.

FG Withdraws Charges Against Saleh, Others over 2.2Billion Naira Fraud


The Federal Government has withdrawn the 2.2 billion Naira fraud charges, filed against the Chief Registrar of the Supreme Court, Mr. Ahmed Gambo Saleh and two others, before the High Court of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

Mr Saleh was to be arraigned alongside Mr. Muhammed Abdulrahaman Sharif and one Rilwanu Lawal before Justice Abba Bello Mohammed, on a 9-count charge bordering on diversion of 2.2 billion Naira public fund, Criminal Breach of Trust and taking bribe from Supreme Court contractors to the tune of 74.4 million Naira.

Rivers rerun: Police recover N111 million bribe from INEC officials (PHOTOS)


Police on Tuesday said it recovered more than N111 million from electoral officials alleged to have been bribed by Rivers State government during the December 10, 2016 rerun elections.

The money was reportedly recovered from 23 electoral Officers.

UNILAG bans mini-skirts, knickers, sleeveless clothes in new dress code for students


The management of the University of Lagos (UNILAG) has released a dress code notice for students of the institution, banning outfits such as sleeveless, knickers, mini-skirts and dresses which are not at least knee length.

In a circular to undergraduates, the university management said, “indecent modes of exposure do not reflect the seriousness, dignity and character-moulding nature of the institution.”

The management warned undergraduates to desist from wearing tight outfits and those that expose sensitive parts of their body.

NSCDC foil suicide attack, arrest female bomber in Maiduguri


Two suicide bombers were on Tuesday intercepted while attempting to detonate explosives around a long queue at NNPC mega station along Damboa road in Maiduguri, the Borno police command has said.

One of the bombers was reportedly killed while the second was arrested by officials of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC).

Both bombers were said to be about 18-years-old.
