Lagos State | Couple beat accountant to death over chicken roost


A chicken roost built by a Lagos resident, Segun Irein, has put his family into trouble.

Segun and his wife, Sola, allegedly beat their neighbour, Idowu Solaja, to death over the roost at their house on Babs Lawal Street in the Ikorodu area.

PUNCH Metro learnt that Idowu, a chartered accountant, whose house backed the roost, had complained to the couple that he was being disturbed by the chickens.However, the Ireins allegedly attacked him.

Woman films herself carrying out sex act in courthouse 'to get her charges dropped'


Police have launched an investigation after a woman filmed herself performing a sex act on a man inside a courthouse and posted the video on Twitter.

After sharing the explicit clip online the 26-year-old woman boasted that it was to get her out of trouble without revealing what kind of trouble she was in.

The 34-second video showed a sex act on a bench in a corridor outside a courtroom, but has been deleted from the woman's Twitter account.

A Zimbabwean woman gave birth to a 'frog-like creature' - before being ordered to burn its corpse in front of horrified villagers.

Precious Nyathi, from the village of Gokwe, in the north-west of the country, was eight months pregnant when she went into labour.

But her husband, Mr Nomore, was left baffled when the 36-year-old gave birth to 'something strange' which resembled an amphibious creature.

The baby later died in hospital before village elders ordered that the 'frog-like creature' be burnt in 
front of residents.

Lagos State Police release official statement on Seun Egbegbe's arrest


Below is an official statement from the Lagos State Police Command on the Seun Egbegbe's arrest. 
"Arrest Of Notorious Fraudsters
Today at about 1300hrs one Seun Karim aka Egbegbe and one Ayo Oyekan disguise as the MD of Gbagada general hospital and the other as a patient. They lured one Alhaji Isa Adamu and Abdullahi Haruna both bureau de change members , from different location that they needed 9000dollars and 3000pounds. The unsuspecting victims brought same to the suspects at the hospital where they collected the said amount and attempted to escape with the money.

A druggie takes frightened 13-year-old girl hostage in her room so he could exchange her for drugs (Photos)


A druggie held a terrified 13-year-old girl at knifepoint in her bedroom after breaking in so he could exchange her for drugs only for Russian police to storm in and free her.

The drug-crazed man broke into the house in the city of Omsk in Omsk Oblast region, central Russia, where the girl lives with her grandmother.

Named only as Zhenya, he started demanding drugs from the terrified family, and when it became clear they didn't have any he made the family call the police so that he could get his fix in exchange for the girl's freedom.

Former Brazil President's wife declared brain dead


The wife of Brazil’s embattled former president Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva was declared brain dead on Thursday, doctors in Sao Paulo said.
“An absence of blood flow in the brain was identified,” doctors at the Sirio-Libanes hospital said.
The family of Marisa Leticia Lula da Silva, 66, had authorized the donation of her organs and “procedures were begun for the donation,” the hospital said in a statement.

Patrick Akpobolokemi, former director-general of the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA), recently threatened to slap a female journalist in the premises of the federal high court, Lagos.

Akpobolokemi is standing trial for alleged corruption.

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) accused him of defrauding the federal government to the tune of N795.2million.

The Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, has described the Spiritual leader of the Adoration Ministries in Enugu, Rev Fr Mbaka, as a fake Fulani superstitious idol worshipper.

IPOB made the allegation while reacting to Mbaka’s recent comments on the pro-Biafra group.

New national minimum wage coming - Minister of Labour


The Technical Committee on National Minimum Wage, saddled with the responsibility of reviewing workers’ salaries to reflect current socio-economic realities, will submit its report next week.

The Minister of Labour and Employment, Mr Chris Ngige, told State House correspondents that the two congresses were on the committee.
“We are almost finishing our work and we are handing over next week.” He noted with concern the inability of some state governments to settle their monthly workers’ salaries , as well as the inflationary trend in the country.

Dino Melaye raises alarm over the construction of VP Osinbajo's gatehouse that would cost N250m


The Chairman, Senate Committee of the Federal Capital Territory, Senator Dino Melaye, on Thursday said the lawmakers could call for a review of the contract awarded for the construction of the official residence of the vice president, Professor Yemi Osinbajo.

According to Melaye, the gatehouse of the three-bedroomed apartment will cost N250m.

Health minister says he has NO knowledge of HIV cure by Abia professor


The Minister of Health, Prof. Isaac Adewole, has said that he was not aware of a cure for HIV/AIDS being reported by the majority of the Nigerian media.

The minister had reacted to the not-so-new claims of finding a cure for HIV being made by a Professor of Virology at the Michael Okpara University of Agriculture, Umudike in Abia State, Maduike Ezeibe.

Contrary to media interpretation of his claims, Ezeibe said he had only found a “potentiate” for possible manufacturing of HIV drugs.

Nigeria to deploy drones to protect electricity transmission equipment


The Transmission Company of Nigeria, TCN, says it will deploy drones to check vandalism of its transmission lines and equipment in the country.

Ekiti State | Herdsman remanded in Court for grazing on N25m cassava farmland


The police on Thursday arraigned a 30-year-old herdsman, Abubakar Usman, in an Ado-Ekiti Chief Magistrate Court for grazing on a cassava farmland.

The Prosecutor, Sgt. Bankole Olasunkanmi, told the court that the accused and others at large, committed the offence sometimes in December at Iyemero farm settlement camp ‎in Ikole-Ekiti.

Olasunkanmi said that the accused unlawfully permit his cattle to graze on the 70 hectares cassava farmland property of Bunmi Akingba, valued N25,000,000.

Rogue Lagos filmmaker, Seun Egbegbe has been arrested again, this time he was caught trying to swindle an unsuspecting Bureau D'Change mallam today.

According to eyewitnesses, Seun Egbegbe is currently in police custody. They say Seun came with his entourage to change money and he tried to swindle the bureau de change mallams who raised alarm and he was thoroughly beaten by onlookers before he was whisked away by the police.

One prison official dead after prison inmates take hostages in Delaware - Officials


Delaware prison officials say one hostage is dead and a second is alert and talking after authorities entered a building at the state's largest prison where inmates had taken staff members hostage.

Officials announced in a statement Thursday morning that they had secured the building at the James T. Vaughn Correctional Center where the disturbance occurred. The prison is in Smyrna, about 15 miles north of the state capital of Dover. Officials say after authorities breached the building, one Department of Correction worker was found unresponsive and later pronounced dead.

The inmates took four corrections department workers hostage Wednesday morning, prompting a lockdown of all Delaware prisons. The inmates released one staffer in the afternoon and another Wednesday night. At least one of those staffers had injuries that were not considered life-threatening.

Bayelsa State | State Assembly approves N3 billion for members’ cars, while workers are owed for 6 months


The Bayelsa House of Assembly has approved a N3 billion loan request from the state government to purchase cars for legislators and other political office holders.

The Speaker of the House, Kombowei Benson, who confirmed this to journalists on Thursday in Yenagoa, said the decision was taken at a closed-door session of the House.

Mr. Benson, while defending the decision, said the legislators had nothing to hide but resolved to consider the loan application “in camera’’.

UN to Europe: It’s in your interest to help Nigeria


Toby Lanzer, UN assistant secretary general and lead humanitarian coordinator for the Sahel, has advised European countries to help tackle the humanitarian crisis in countries in the Lake Chad region.

Lanzer said this ahead of a major donor conference in Oslo that will be co-hosted by Nigeria, Germany and Norway on February 24.

According to reports, Lanzer said European countries have done too little to tackle the crisis despite the opportunity to address humanitarian and migration issues.
