Sen. Ben Bruce says Buhari is going about CHANGE the wrong way


Nigerian Senator, Ben Murray Bruce, has stated that the Muhammadu Buhari administration is trying to effect change in the wrong manner.
"To paraphrase Barack Obama Change won't come if we keep blaming other people or other administrations," he said.
"We must be the change that we promised!" he added.

We have no plan to reduce petrol to N70 per liter - FG


The federal government has announced that it will not reduce the pump price of petrol following a recommendation from the House of Reps that the commodity shouldn't cost more than N70 per litre.

The PPPRA on Thursday held a meeting to discuss the issue.

A top ranking PPPRA official said all the stakeholders came to the table to decide how much a litre of petrol should be sold.

Apostle Johnson Suleiman threatens legal action against DSS


Apostle Johnson Suleiman of the Omega Fire Ministries (OFM), has threatened to sue the Department of State Services (DSS) for allegedly attempting to arrest him in Ado Ekiti.

Operatives of the DSS were alleged to have stormed the hotel room of the pastor in Adebayo area of the state capital on Wednesday and attempted to force their way to his room to arrest him.

They were, however, resisted by security men of the hotel that insisted on knowing their mission. Minutes later, Governor Ayodele Fayose led a rescue mission to the hotel forcing the operatives to flee the scene.

APC’s Constitution Review Targeted At Tinubu, Others – Timi Frank reveals


Barely 24 hours after the national leadership of the All Progressives Congress (APC) inaugurated its constitution review committee, the party’s embattled Deputy National Publicity Secretary, Timi Frank, has faulted the exercise, alleging that it was aimed at easing out some powerful individuals.

In a statement yesterday in Abuja, Frank, who is on a technical suspension, claimed that the national chairman, Chief John Odigie-Oyegun, was “vigorously working to ensure that he pushes out some prominent members of the party.”

He warned that the move was capable of exacerbating the seeming crisis in the party.

Sen Godswill Akpabio says over 20 lawmakers will soon join PDP


The Minority Leader of the Senate, Sen. Godswill Akpabio has  said that some lawmakers would be joining the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) once the party finally resolves its leadership crisis.

Akpabio disclosed this at the Expanded Caucus and the 73 National Executive Council (NEC) meeting of the PDP held on Thursday in Abuja.

He said that although some lawmakers were defecting from PDP to other parties, the PDP still had very significant number of lawmakers as it was wining more seats through conducted elections.

Senate orders probe of Fashola, BPP over alleged inflation of N2.4bn contracts


The Senate, yesterday orderd its Committees on Public Procurement and Works to probe alleged irregularities in awards and inflation of two contract sums which show excess of N2.4 billion by the Ministry of Power, Works and Housing and Bureau of Public Procurement, BPP.

The Senate also directed the committee to forward the report of the probe within one week. Fashola The decision of the Senate was sequel to a motion moved by Senator Dino Melaye (APC, Kogi West) on alleged irregularities in the award of contracts for the construction and rehabilitation of road and bridge projects in the first and second batch forwarded to it by the Ministry of Power, Works and Housing through letters dated November 7 and 15, 2016 as contained in the 2016 budget implementation.

4.7 million Northeast children receive measles vaccination - UN


The UN Children’s Fund (UNICEF) says a major vaccination campaign against a measles outbreak in northeast Nigeria is reaching 4.7 million children.

Mohamed Fall, UNICEF Representative in Nigeria, stated this in a statement according to the Office of the UN Secretary-General.
“Security has improved in some areas so we have acted quickly to access places we could not previously reach and protect children from the spread of a very dangerous disease.

Former Manchester City player Denis Suarez produced two wonderful finishes as holders FC Barcelona reached the Copa del Rey semi-finals with a 6-2 aggregate win over Real Sociedad.

Leading 1-0 from the first leg, Suarez doubled the lead with a low finish before Lionel Messi’s penalty kick made it 3-0 on aggregate on Thursday.

UK court dismisses Niger Delta community suit against Shell


A High Court in London has dismissed a suit by Bille and Ogale communities seeking to sue Royal Dutch Shell in English courts for spill incidents in the Niger Delta.

The communities had in May 2015, through their United Kingdom solicitors, Leigh Day, brought a litigation against Shell Petroleum Development Company of Nigeria Limited for oil spill, and also filed claims against RDS as an “anchor defendant” to bring the claims in England.

Both the RDS and SPDC challenged the jurisdiction of the English court to hear the claims.

Gunmen shoot General Overseer of Reigners’ Bible Church's counsel in Uyo


Ini Ekpo, counsel to Apostle Akan Weeks, the General Overseer of Reigners Bible Church, which collapsed on 10th December last year, killing scores of worshippers, was on Thursday morning, shot by unidentified gunmen at his residence in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State.

It was learnt that the gunmen gained entrance into his house through the main gate around 2:27am and advanced to his room where they shot him twice on his two legs before they made away with four laptops.

A family source, who did not want to be named, told Punch that the assailants accused Ekpo of being responsible for the lies Weeks told the commission.

Yesterday there was reports that MMM Nigeria top Guider, Chuddy Ugorji and his wife, Amaka have reportedly fled the country to the Philippines.

It was gathered that Ugorji, left Nigeria with his wife to the Philippines. He fled the country when many investors were waiting to be paid their money with the accrued interest, the News Agency of Nigeria reported.

MASSOB condemn Obasanjo' support for Igbo presidency


The Leadership of the Movement for the Actualization of the Sovereign State of Biafra, MASSOB, has berated former President Olusegun Obasanjo for rooting for an Igbo Presidency in 2019.

The group said Obasanjo’s comment was “jittery.”

Recall that the former President had on Tuesday called for the next President of Nigeria to come from the South East.

ASUP announces one-week nationwide strike


The Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics (ASUP), on Wednesday, announced that it would embark on a nationwide one-week warning strike.

The union says it had already directed its members in all public polytechnics across the federation to fully comply.

Usman Dutse, ASUP president, made this known during a press conference in Abuja.

Dutse noted that all academic and administrative activities in Nigeria’s public polytechnics are to be suspended from 12 noon on January 30, to February 6, 2017.

There are 1.1bn smokers in the world – 226m of them live in poverty


The world has 1.1 billion smokers aged 15 and above – and approximately 226 million of them live in poverty – a new report by the World Health Organisation has shown.

The research, which was published in ‘The economics of tobacco and tobacco control’, was carried out in collaboration with the National Cancer Institute of the United States of America.
“The tobacco industry and the deadly impact of its products cost the world’s economies more than US$ 1 trillion annually in healthcare expenditures and lost productivity,” said the report.
