Papua New Guinea experience 7.9 magnitude earthquake strike


According to the US Geological Survey, a magnitude 7.9 earthquake has struck west of Papua New Guinea. The quake was 153 kilometers (95.5 miles) deep and centered 40 kilometers (24 miles) west of the town of Panguna.

Preliminary reports said the earthquake, which occurred at 2:30 p.m. local time Sunday (11:30 p.m. Saturday ET) measured 8.0 but USGS later downgraded its magnitude.

11 persons killed in Georgia following severe weather


Eleven people were killed and 23 were injured after severe weather struck southern Georgia, officials said Sunday.

Catherine Howden of the Georgia Emergency Management Agency said the deaths occurred in Cook, Brooks and Berrien counties in southern Georgia near the Georgia-Florida line.

She said the deaths were related to severe weather but could not specify whether tornadoes were the cause. Tornado warnings had been issued for parts of Georgia overnight.

Rescuers struggled Sunday to pull survivors from the wreckage of a train crash which killed 36 passengers in southern India, the latest in a series of disasters on the country’s creaking rail network.

Officials were investigating whether Maoist rebels had tampered with the track, after eight coaches and the engine of the Jagdalpur-Bhubaneswar express were derailed at around 11:00 pm (1730 GMT) on Saturday.
“The death toll has gone up to 36. It is a possibility that it may rise further,” Anil Kumar Saxena, national railway spokesman, told AFP.

Special Assistant to Buhari, Garba Shehu mocks Jonathan; says Buhari not dead


The Senior Special Assistant to President Muhammadu Buhari on Media and Publicity, Mallam Garba Shehu, has mocked immediate former president of Nigeria, Goodluck Jonathan, for visiting Olusegun Obasanjo and not attending Donald Trump’s inauguration as the 45th US president.

Jonathan was rumoured to have been invited for Trump’s inauguration as president, but was instead spotted at Obasanjo’s hometown on a visit.

Shehu was responding to rumours making the rounds on social media, that his principal, who is away on a 10-day vacation, has died in a UK hospital.

Twitter investigating issue with 'POTUS' transition


Twitter says it's investigating an issue with the transition from former President Barack Obama to President Donald Trump on the official @POTUS account, after users complained they were mistakenly added as followers. 

The plan is part of a broader digital transition connected to the White House's social media accounts, including Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and Snapchat. For Twitter, Trump assumes the POTUS handle, while Obama shifts to a new handle, @POTUS44. The POTUS account would start over at zero tweets, but include all its followers, which sat around 13 million before the transition was formally completed. POTUS44 would serve as an archive of tweets during the Obama administration.

Thousands join London in protest against President Dump Trump


Thousands of people marched through central London on Saturday as part of a global day of protests against new US President Donald Trump and his derogatory remarks about women.

The largely female crowd, which also had many men and children, marched from the US embassy to Trafalgar Square, chanting “dump Trump” and waving banners demanding equal rights.
“Trump Special Relationship: Just Say No” and “Our Rights Are Not For Grabs — Neither Are We” were among the banners held aloft, along with “We shall overcomb” and “Make bigotry wrong again”.

Sergio Aguero extends contract with Manchester City


Sergio Aguero has signed a one-year contract extension at Manchester City, tying him to the Premier League side until June 2020.

The 28-year-old has twice won the title with City – unforgettably netting an injury-time winner against QPR in 2012 to clinch glory – and has established himself in third on their all-time goalscoring charts with 154.

NDLEA apprehend textile trader with N426m drug on flight to Cambodia


47-year-old textile trader, Ifeka Obi, was about to board a flight at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja on Wednesday when a search of his baggage revealed a curious cargo.

Tucked within a load of foodstuffs, which he told operatives of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency at the scene that he was exporting for sale in Cambodia was 4.4kg of methamphetamine.

According to the NDLEA, at about $325,000 per kilogramme, the narcotic cargo Obi was caught with will fetch his handlers at least $1.4m (about N426m).
