Enyantu Ifenne: Why I was removed from the list of ambassadorial nominees


A former chieftain of the defunct Action Congress of Nigeria, ACN, Dr. Enyantu Ifenne has identified some ‘forces within Benue State’ as the reason behind the removal of her name from the latest list of non-career ambassadorial nominees.

Ifenne and several others’ names were missing from the latest list released last week by the federal government following the initial rejection of the list submitted by the presidency, thus triggering a slew of controversy.

She was replaced by Steve Ugbah, a former guber aspirant from Benue State.

Police confirms arrest of the masterminders of Nigerian-Turkish school kidnap


Two suspected masterminds of the kidnapping of pupils and staff members of the Nigerian Turkish International Colleges have been arrested by the police.

Apart from the ringleaders, Philip Kakadu, aka General Kakadu, and Romeo Council, aka Raw, other suspects were also said to be undergoing screening in connection with the abduction.

It was gathered that 29-year-old Kakadu and Council, 40, were apprehended in Warri, Delta State, by operatives of the Inspector-General of Police Intelligence Response Team, led by ACP Abba Kyari.

Nelson Effiong, a senator from Akwa Ibom south, has defected from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Effiong announced his decision to leave the PDP on the floor of the senate on Thursday, citing the crisis in the party.

B-2 bombers kill nearly 100 ISIS terrorists in Libya


Two B-2 “stealth” bombers struck Islamic State targets in Libya on Wednesday evening, killing nearly 100 terrorists just two days before President Obama is set to leave office, two U.S. defense officials told Fox News.

The B-2s dropped 108 precision-guided bombs on two ISIS training camps 30 miles southwest of the Libyan coastal city of Sirte, killing an estimated 85 fighters, a defense official said.

President Obama authorized the action. Most of the terrorists targeted had escaped Sirte after extensive military actions there.

Yahya Jammeh’s lawyer flees to Senegal, asks president to step down to avoid gruesome end


Counsel to outgoing president of The Gambia, Yahya Jammeh, Edu Gomez, has fled the country to neighbouring Senegal after asking the president to step down in order to avoid a gruesome end to his tenure.

Gomez, in a letter, he alleged that he was forced to represent the president and his party, Alliance for Patriotic Reorientation and Construction, APRC, under “tremendous pressure and coercion.”

The lawyer represented Jammeh and the APRC, in their failed attempt to have the country’s Supreme Court overturn Adama Barrow’s victory and inauguration as President.

Wole Soyinka confirms destroying his Green Card


After threatening to do it a week before the US presidential elections last November, Nobel laureate Wole Soyinka has confirmed he has destroyed his green card because Donald Trump won.

In an interview with the Atlantic on Tuesday, Soyinka confirmed he had followed through on his pledge to destroy his green card if Trump won as he celebrated Thanksgiving with his family in the US.

FIFA official wants offside, yellow cards scrapped from football


FIFA Technical Director, Marco van Basten, has called for offside calls and yellow cards to be abolished.

Van Basten is advocating for sin-bins to be introduced into football in future.

The former Holland international was employed by FIFA in September 2015 to handle all technical areas from technology to refereeing. And some of his long-term plans for the game is to scrap some of its most established rules.

A man in Florida has been accused of posting online that he would kill US President-elect Donald Trump at his inauguration on Friday.
“This is January 6, 2017. I was requested to type this in and post it,” Dominic Puopolo said in a video posted on Monday.
“Yes, I will be at the review stand, the inauguration and I’m going to kill President Trump, President-elect Trump today.”

Children among 25 feared dead in Italy snowslide


Several children were among more than 25 people unaccounted for, feared dead, Thursday after an avalanche engulfed a mountain hotel in earthquake-ravaged central Italy.

The national civil protection agency said the Hotel Rigopiano had suffered a direct hit by a two-metre (six-feet) high wall of snow on Wednesday.

Emergency services were struggling to get ambulances and excavation equipment to the remote site with the first snow plough only arriving just before midday.

EFCC nab councillor and four others for selling IDPs food


The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, has arrested a supervisory councillor for agriculture in Mafa local government of Borno State, Umar Ibrahim, and four others for allegedly diverting 300 bags of rice donated by Danish Refugee Council (DRC), a Non Governmental Organisation and meant for Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) in the council.

Others arrested along with the councillor are Bulama Ali Zangebe, Modu Bulama, Halilu Abdullahi and Abacha Ali.

Saraki’s Trial: Fire destroyed documents on alleged foreign funds transfer – Witness


The second prosecution witness in the trial of the Senate President Bukola Saraki, Amazu Nwachukwu, yesterday continued his testimony at the Code of Conduct Tribunal (CCT).

He said a fire incident at the Ilorin branch of Guaranty Trust Bank, destroyed documents on the alleged foreign funds transfer when Saraki was governor in 2011.

The witness, a senior staff of the bank, said during cross-examination led by the defence counsel, Paul Usoro (SAN), that he did not have the opportunity of seeing the said document before it was destroyed by the fire.

Southern Kaduna crisis: Fulani leaders resolve to end to killings


Fulani leaders in Southern Kaduna have expressed their commitment to the restoration of peace and calm in the crises-torn area.

They made this commitment when a non-governmental organisation, Global Peace Foundation Nigeria (GPFN), on Tuesday met with indigenous Fulani leaders and youths in an effort to proffer solution to the crisis in Southern part of Kaduna State.

The meeting which took place at Adara Hall in Kachia under the theme, ‘Active Involvement of Fulanis in Southern Kaduna Peace-building Process’ drew over 80 participants of Fulani extraction across the eight local government areas of Southern Kaduna to discuss how to end the crisis and restore peace and confidence in the area.

Penalty shootouts may decide drawn World Cup matches - Officials


Marco van Basten, Fifa’s chief officer for technical development, has confirmed that the 2026 World Cup could feature penalty shootouts to determine a winner in drawn matches.

Fifa president, Gianni Infantino, last week received approval from the Fifa Council for his plan to expand the World Cup to 48 teams from 2026, and the group stage is set to involve 16 groups of three teams.

However, three-team groups look likely to increase the chances of sides playing for mutually beneficial draws in the final group game, as well as the increased possibility that teams will finish level at the conclusion of the group. Penalty shootouts are regarded as a relatively convenient and fair way of separating teams with identical records.

Okorocha threatens to dismiss Local Govt employee with 60% attendance at work


Any worker in the local councils that record less than 60 per cent attendance would be sanctioned, the Imo State governor, Rochas Okorocha, has said.

Also, the governor has directed that the first session of 200 workers of the councils be trained on the Information Communication Technology (ICT), to expose them to computer literacy.

Okorocha, who said this recently while inspecting some prototype projects in the councils, regretted that records indicated that many workers at that level had 40 per cent attendance receiving salaries with tax payers money.

Kelechi Iheanacho has told The Players’ Tribune that he had to save up around 15p (50 naira) to watch Sergio Aguero’s famous goal that secured the Premier League title for Manchester City in 2012.

Iheanacho was a 15-year-old in his native Nigeria when his now teammate Aguero scored a 94th-minute winner on the final day of the season to clinch a 3-2 victory over Queens Park Rangers and City’s first title in 44 years.

Details have began to emerge on how the accidental bombing of an Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) camp in Rann, Borno State happened.

According to report, the Air Force bombing of the camp on Tuesday was based on an intelligence alert by a foreign country.

The report added that the Air Force was not aware of the existence of the IDPs camp due to lack of synergy among the military, the Emergency Management bodies and the Borno State Government.
