Nigeria's external reserves rise further to $25.4bn


The nation’s foreign exchange reserves have risen further to $25.4bn, according to the latest data obtained from the website of the Central Bank of Nigeria.

In less than one week, the reserves rose by almost $300m from $25.084bn recorded on December 16, 2016 to $25.361 on December 22, 2016, the CBN data showed

This indicated that the foreign exchange reserves had risen to almost four-month high.

The last time the reserves recorded something close to this figure was on September 2 when it had the balance of $24.361bn.

Body of crashed Russian plane found in Black Sea


Russian divers on Monday found the main body of the military plane that crashed in the Black Sea with 92 people onboard, an official told Russian news agencies.
"Divers... have found the fuselage of the plane that crashed yesterday in the Black Sea," agencies quoted a member of the emergency ministry's Sochi-based search and rescue team as saying.

Boat Carrying Football Team Capsizes In Uganda, 30 Drown (Photos)


Thirty people are feared dead after drowning in Lake Albert on Christmas day as they traveled to participate in a friendly football match. According to eyewitnesses, the boat was overloaded and most of the passengers sat on one side of the boat making it lose balance.

The victims were among footballers and fans from Kawaibenda village in Buliisa District who were travelling to Runga Landing site for a football match as part of the Christmas day festivities.

A jihadi father who used his seven-year-old daughter as a suicide bomber in Syria has now met his own death. Abu Nimr al-Suri was shown on a video kissing his daughter goodbye before sending her into a Syrian police station, where she was blown up by a remote detonator.

Russia Today's Middle East correspondent Lizzie Phelan has tweeted a photograph of Abu Nimr in his traditional death shroud. 

She said he had also been involved in the murder of Syrian TV actor Mohamad Rafea, 30, who was kidnapped and killed in 2012.

The Rivers State Police Command has confirmed the arrest of one Sergeant Promise Ukwuoma and an employee of Access Bank, Rumuolumeni Branch, Samuel Ndudiri, identified as members of a criminal gang who attempted to the bank.

The policeman and the bank worker were said to have been apprehended after a discreet investigation by operatives of the Intelligence Response Team with assistance from the Technical Intelligence Unit of the Nigeria Police.

According to an online statement, which was confirmed by the State Police Public Relations Officer, Mr. Nnamdi Omoni, the duo, were arrested at about 11.35am on Friday.

Suspected cultists go on rampage in Rivers Community, kill eight


Gunmen suspected to be members of cult groups during the weekend killed eight people in Omoku Town in Ogba/Egbema/Ndoni Local Government Area of Rivers State.

It was gathered that the heavily armed men stormed the community at about 9pm and shot repeatedly, scaring many away in the process.

A resident of the area, who narrowly escaped the attack, Chief Ezegohuru Eluozo, told newsmen that the incident caused panic and disrupted Christmas celebrations in Omoku.

Sambisa forest to serve as training ground for Nigerian army – COAS


The Chief of Army Staff, Tukur Buratai, on Monday disclosed that Sambisa forest would now serve as training ground for officers of the Nigerian Army as from next year.

Buratai made the revelation in Damasak, Borno, while celebrating Christmas with troops of 145 Battalion after the road leading to the town was reopened by Governor Kashim Shettima, three years after closure.

APC Chairman in Ekiti denies insulting Pastor Adeboye


The Chairman of Ekiti chapter of All Progressives Congress (APC) Olajide Awe, has denied report circulating online in which he was reported to have denigrated the General Overseer of the Redeemed Christian of God, Pastor Enoch Adeboye over the comments made by the cleric during his visit to Governor Ayodele Fayose over the weekend.

The APC Chairman in a statement on Monday said he did not speak or issue any statement condemning commendations given to the State Governor by the RCCG General Overseer described the stories circulating in the social media as deliberate lie as APC would never dabble into any controversial issue involving religious leaders.

Boko Haram leader arrested In Lagos


There seem to be no hiding place for Boko Haram terrorists in Nigeria as one of their leaders who escaped from Borno State and settled-in in Lagos has now been arrested.

The Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Tukur Buratai, told journalists in Maiduguri that the Nigerian Army has resolved to go after all fleeing commanders of the terrorists.

General Buratai also asked soldiers in the northeast to pursue the fleeing terrorists and intercept them.

Singer George Michael Dead at 53


British singer George Michael, who rose to fame during the 1980s as part of the pop duo Wham! before launching a Grammy-winning solo career, died Sunday, his publicist confirms.

He was 53.
