Benin Crown Prince fights with Chief Priest


The crown prince of Benin of Kingdom, His Royal Highness, Eheneden Erediauwa, has symbolically wrestled with the Chief Priest of Okhuaihe shrine, Osarodion Usuanlele.

The ‘wrestling’ is a traditional rite for the coronation of Prince Eheneden as the 39th Oba of Benin.

The crown prince symbolically fought with the Usuanlele, who is also the Ohen N’ Ukoni Neyedo, on Saturday evening.

Renew cult clash in Rivers leaves Four Dead


A renew cult clash with two rival cult group in Akporo-Sogho community in Khana Local Government Area of Rivers State has left four persons dead

According to Punch, it was gathered that some houses were also razed during the clash in the community on Saturday.

Millers overwhelm by High Demand for Local Rice


Following the Federal Government’s ban on rice importation through the land borders, local rice millers are finding it difficult to cope with the demand for the commodity from dealers.

Only Umza Rice, the largest local rice mill in Nigeria, which is located in Kano, is currently supplying most markets in the country.

Many dealers expressed anger over depositing money to the company for months without getting any supply.

Consumption of rice in Nigeria is put at over six million metric tonnes per annum. Local production is about 2.8 million metric tonnes while imports account for 2.5 million metric tonnes.

Benue State | Police arrest 3 Agric Ministry staff over missing N12m


The Police in Makurdi, the Benue State capital, have confirmed the arrest of three officials of the state Ministry of Agriculture and Natural Resources over their alleged complicity in the diversion of N12 million meant for the supply of fertiliser to farmers in the state.

Spokesman of the command, Moses Yamu, who confirmed the arrest of the trio, said they were being quizzed over their alleged involvement in the scam.

External reserves hit 11-year low of $24.21bn


The country’s external reserves have hit an 11-year low of $24.21bn, according to the latest data from the Central Bank of Nigeria.

The development means a limited amount of dollars will be available at the official interbank spot market, fuelling concerns over another round of depreciation of the naira.

The country’s external reserves had depleted to a then record-low of $24.8bn about two weeks ago.

The foreign exchange reserves fell by $600m in two weeks before shedding $1bn in four weeks, the CBN statistics showed.

The Ethiopian government has unveiled stringent rules for its state of emergency which the opposition says is meant to curb a wave of protests, sometimes deadly, in the Oromia region and other areas.

Hundreds have been killed in anti-government protests in the past year, according to human rights groups and opposition activists. The protesters have been demanding wider freedoms in one of Africa’s best-performing economies.

On Oct. 2, more than 50 people were killed in a stampede after security forces opened fire on anti-government protesters during a religious festival in Bishoftu, southeast of the capital. The incident sparked more violence in Oromia leading the government to announce the state of emergency. The government has also enforced an internet blackout.

Government empowers 200 women with 600 goats in Jigawa State


The Jigawa Government has empowered 200 women with 600 goats in Buji Local Government Area of the state.

Ali Safiyanu, the Information Officer of Buji LGA, made this known to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Sunday in Dutse.

The goats were distributed to the beneficiaries in the 11 wards of the local government under the Goat Rearing/Breeding Loan Scheme introduced to empower women in the state.

Babatunde Fashola: Releasing funds to contractors will end recession


The Federal Government has said it is investing massively in road construction, public housing and other infrastructure as part of measures to take the country out of recession.

It said it had released funds for the payment of debts owed contractors, noting that this had led to the return of most of them to project sites and resulting in the re-engagement of workers who were earlier laid off.

The Minister of Power, Works and Housing, Babatunde Fashola, who said this at the annual conference of the Quantity Surveyors Registration Board of Nigeria on Thursday in Abuja, noted that the Federal Government was committed to taking concrete measures to boost the sectors.

A 23-old-girl is currently under Police detention for blackmailing a man who she had sex with in a hotel.

According to reports by LIB, a video clip shows faceless police interrogating a young lady arrested in Abuja has been making the rounds on social media. The lady identified as Jessica, 23, secretly filmed her married lover after a sexual encounter in a hotel and then blackmailed him for money and iPhone. Jessica threatened to send the video to her victim's wife if he did not pay N180,000. After the initial payment from the man, she went on to make another demand of N50,000.

Justice Adeniyi Ademola who was among the judges that were arrested and detained last Saturday by agents of the Department of State Security, says he was made to sign a confessional statement at the DSS office with a gun pointed at him.
