BBC Reports: Nigeria seizes $800,000 in ‘anti-corruption raids’ on judges


Nigeria’s security agency says it has seized $800,000 (£645,200) in cash in raids targeting senior judges suspected of corruption.

The DSS agency says the raids were carried out in recent days and several judges were arrested.

The Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) accused the authorities of carrying out a “Gestapo-style” operation, demanding the release of those arrested.

Abuja | Judges Boycott Courts To Protest Arrest Of Colleagues


Judges in Nigeria’s Federal Capital Territory (FCT) on Monday abandoned their various duty posts to protest last weekend’s arrest of their colleagues in different parts of the country on allegations of corruption.

The Department of State Security (DSS), which carried out the arrests, claimed to have found incriminating documents and foreign currencies in the homes of the affected judicial officers.

The suspect who hailed from Benue state claimed that he joined the armed robbery gang a week after his traditional wedding.

He noted that his arrest was divinely arranged as he had severally attempted to quit the evil act but could not.

The Minister of National Planning, Udoma Udo Udoma has revealed that Nigeria managed to raise only 55 percent of its six-month revenue target in the first six months of 2016.

Soldiers says “they got N13m from ransom paid for Emefiele’s Wife”


Two soldiers, Lance Corporals Musa Maidabra and Edwin George, serving at 122D30 Regiment in Maiduguri, Borno State, have been arrested for transporting the ransom that was paid for the release of the wife of the Central Bank Governor, Margaret Emefiele.

Emefiele and three others were abducted along Benin-Agbor Road about two weeks ago and were released 24 hours later after the payment of undisclosed amount to their abductors.

The two soldiers said they received N6.5m each as their share of the ransom estimated to be around N80m.

Report says It's Worse to Be a Girl in U.S. Than Kazakhstan


The United States has finished behind countries including Algeria and Kazakhstan in a new ranking of the best and worst countries in which to be a girl.

The report compiled by Save the Children suggested Sweden was the best place for young females to live. Niger finished at the bottom. The U.S. was rated 32nd on the 144-country list.

Expect Price Of Rice To Fall By November - Federal Government


The Federal Government has declared that the price of rice would start to fall from November this year. Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development, Chief Audu Ogbeh, said this in Abuja yesterday while addressing members of the Senate Committee on Agriculture and Rural Development.

According to him, more Nigerians have returned to their various farms and by the next harvesting season next month, the price of rice would start to crash.

Barcelona suffers double injury blow


Barcelona have been dealt a double injury blow after Jasper Cillessen and Sergi Roberto both picked up injuries while away on international duty.

Goalkeeper Cillessen – who joined the Spanish club in August to replace the departed Claudio Bravo - hurt his knee while training with his Netherlands team-mates on Saturday.

A scan on Monday revealed the 27-year-old had sprained ligaments in his right ankle, ruling him out for approximately three weeks.

Police Arrested and Tortured 14 Student Union Leaders


About 14 student union activists were arrested this afternoon by the Nigerian Police who tortured, beat, and brutalized them as they met near YabaTech.According to Sahara Reporters, these students congregated in Yaba following their attendance at a hearing at the Federal High Court, Ikoyi, Lagos.

The student activists attended a hearing on the case between some the rusticated University of Lagos Students’ Union (ULSU) and their university, UNILAG. Today’s hearing ended with Federal Court Justice Salihu Seidu adjourning the case to October 25th because the defendant, UNILAG, failed to show up in court.
