Family of kidnapped students in Epe begs to swap relatives for ailing student


Family members of one of the ailing students that was abducted by suspected militants last Thursday, at the Lagos State Model College, Igbonla, in Eredo Local Council Development Area of Epe, have appealed to the abductors to release their relative for treatment, saying they were ready to swap another family member for the sick captive.

The family said it had managed to raise N1 million, which was contributed by relatives and friends. A strange call, suspected to be from the kidnappers, was received at 1.35p.m. yesterday, but the person at the other end was said to be silent. A relative, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said:

Group slam Nigerian Bar Association over Threatened court boycott


The Buhari Media Support Group (BMSG) has criticised the Nigerian Bar Association for threatening to boycott courts following arrest of some judges by the Department State Service (DSS).

A statement by the Coordinator and Secretary of the group on Monday, Malam Muhammad Labbo and Cassidy Madueke, said that the DSS followed due process and rule of law in carrying out the arrests.

Labo said the service had valid and legally-issued search warrants before embarking on the assignment.

60-year-old man, Okporo Arigo to commit suicide in a bush at Uwheru in Ughelli North Local Government Area of Delta State due to the current economic hardship.

The late Arigo was said to have left a suicide note, which said he was abandoned by his brother while he had nothing to feed on.

A source, who spoke in confidence, told The Nation that the late Arigo left behind a sick wife and an unspecified number of children.

Judge's Arrest: Buhari appoints new Supreme Court Justices


President Muhammadu Buhari has requested the Senate to consider and confirm the nominations of two judges as Justices of the Supreme Court.

The Senate President, Bukola Saraki, read the letter conveying the request after the Senate returned from closed-door session on Tuesday.

The nominated judges are Sidi Bage, Nasarawa State, North Central; and Paul Jauro, Taraba State, North East.

Vanguard reports that Patience aka ‘Mama Peace’ when her husband Goodluck Jonathan was president issued the denial through a statement from her media aide Chima Osuji at the weekend.

BBC Reports: Nigeria seizes $800,000 in ‘anti-corruption raids’ on judges


Nigeria’s security agency says it has seized $800,000 (£645,200) in cash in raids targeting senior judges suspected of corruption.

The DSS agency says the raids were carried out in recent days and several judges were arrested.

The Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) accused the authorities of carrying out a “Gestapo-style” operation, demanding the release of those arrested.

Judges in Nigeria’s Federal Capital Territory (FCT) on Monday abandoned their various duty posts to protest last weekend’s arrest of their colleagues in different parts of the country on allegations of corruption.
