Federal Government fails to produce ex-NSA, Dasuki in court


The Federal Government has failed to produce the former National Security Adviser, Colonel Sambo Dasuki (rtd) before an Abuja High-Court for trial in the charges of money laundering and breach of trust brought against him and others since last year.

Dasuki, who was charged along with five others before Justice Peter Affen, was granted bail when he was first arraigned but re-arrested and has been in custody of the Department of the State Services (DSS) since December 2015.

Amnesty International accuses Sudan of using chemical weapons in Darfur


Sudan’s government has carried out at least 30 likely chemical weapons attacks in the Jebel Marra area of Darfur since January using what two experts concluded was a probable blister agent, Amnesty International said on Thursday.

The rights group estimated that up to 250 people may have died as a result of exposure to the chemical weapons agents.

Borno State | Troops captured four suspected Boko Haram insurgents


The troops of the Nigerian Army have arrested four suspected members of Boko Haram at the Maiduguri Cattle Market.

The Acting Director, Army Public Relations, Col. Sani Usman, said in a statement that three of the suspected terrorists were arrested in the morning on Wednesday with the assistance of the Civilian Joint Task Force.

According to him, the suspects were Abba Go Dallagio, Abba Fanned and Alhaji Nwariye.

The House of Representatives member and former chairman of the Appropriations Committee, Abdulmumin Jibrin, has taken to social media to dismiss his suspension on Wednesday as ridiculous, unfounded, ‘which cannot stand anywhere’.

3 killed, more than 100 hurt in New Jersey as commuter train crash


Three people were killed and more than 100 injured, some critically, when a commuter train derailed and plowed through Hoboken station in New Jersey during the morning rush hour on Thursday, U.S. media and a transit official said.

Citing medical officials, U.S. media reports said three people were killed. Well over 100 people were hurt, many of them critically, Jennifer Nelson, a spokeswoman for train operator New Jersey Transit, told reporters at the scene. She did not confirm any fatalities.

Dramatic pictures posted by commuters showed a train carriage that appeared to have smashed right through the station concourse, collapsing a section of the roof, scattering debris and wreckage and causing devastation.

The Independent Electoral Commission has announced the results of the just concluded Edo Governorship election which were conducted on 28 September 2016.

According to the result released by INEC from the 18 Local Government in Edo State, the All Progressive Congress gather a sum of 319,483 and the Peoples Democratic Party gather the sum of 253,173. Below is the breakdown of the election as released by INEC:

The Ogun State Government, on Wednesday, signed an agreement with a consortium of four private companies to build the second largest refinery in sub-Saharan Africa and the largest petroleum product depot in Nigeria.

UNICEF says 65,000 people living in famine-like conditions in Borno


UNICEF has revised its humanitarian appeal for Nigeria from US$ 55 million to US$ 115 million to assist an additional 750,000 people who can now be reached across conflict-affected areas in Nigeria’s Northeast.

In a statement made available to journalists in Maiduguri, UNICEF stated that as new areas open up to humanitarian assistance, the true scale of the Boko Haram-related crisis and its impact on children is being revealed.

Anambra State | Suspected Fulani herdsmen kidnap Catholic priest, shoots two others; demand N2.5m ransom


The Catholic Diocese of Nnewi, Anambra State, on Wednesday, disclosed that some suspected Fulani herdsmen have abducted the rector of Tansi Major Seminary, Rev. Fr. Dr. Emmanuel Dim.

Speaking with reporters at the Nnewi Catholic Diocese Media House, the Communication Director of the Diocese, Rev. Fr. Hyginus Aghaulor stated that the herdsmen were armed with dangerous weapons including guns, and inflicted serious injuries on two other priests Rev. Frs. Jude Chukwuneke and Jude Ezeokana, during the attack.

Russian President hails Israel’s Shimon Peres for ‘courage and patriotism’


Russian President Vladimir Putin hailed former Israeli statesman Shimon Peres, who died on Wednesday at the age of 93, for his “courage and patriotism”.
“I was lucky enough to have the chance to speak with this remarkable person many times. Every time I admired his courage and patriotism, his wisdom and vision, his ability to grasp the essence of the most difficult issues,” Putin said in a message of condolence.
