Nyesom Wike urges police to Weed out bad eggs


Rivers State Governor, Chief Ezebunwo Nyesom Wike, has advised the Police High Command to take urgent steps to weed out bad eggs from its ranks.

This is as the assistant Inspector-General of Police in-charge of Zone 6, Mr Abubakar Marafa, has declared the support of the Zonal Command to the amnesty programme of the Rivers State Government repentant cultists in the state.

Wike, who spoke yesterday when Marafa paid him a courtesy call at Government House, Port Harcourt, noted that the bad eggs in the police structure negatively affect the implementation of security measures.

Godwin Emefiele tells Afreximbank, Nigerian banks remain strong


The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has reiterated that the nation’s Deposit Money Banks are strong despite the ongoing challenges in the foreign exchange market.

CBN Governor, Godwin Emefiele, at the third quarterly meetings of the Board of Directors of the African Export-Import Bank (Afreximbank), in Lagos, yesterday, reaffirmed that the country’s banks remained strong.

The reaffirmation may have become necessary, as the regional trade bank appeared to have several business interests in the country, with more recently, a $150 million facility granted Heritage Bank Plc.

Brazilian police on Monday arrested Antonio Palocci, a powerful former finance minister and presidential chief of staff in recent Workers Party (PT) governments, as a sweeping anti-corruption probe hit even harder at the left-leaning party.

Prosecutors said at a news conference that Palocci acted as a liaison between the PT and Brazil’s largest engineering and construction conglomerate, Odebrecht SA [ODBES.UL], from 2006 to 2013 in a kickback scheme centered on contracts at state-led oil company Petroleo Brasileiro SA, or Petrobras.

Army refutes claims that Boko Haram hoisted their flags near Chibok


The Nigerian Army has refuted the report that Boko Haram insurgents have hoisted flags in some communities near Chibok, Borno State.

A statement by the army spokesman, Col. Sani Usman, said the troops of the Operations Lafiya Dole are maintaining a high level of vigilance in and around the area to forestall infiltration by the terrorists.

Niger Delta Unrest | NIMASA DG calls for peace, security


The Director-General, Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency, Dr. Dakuku Peterside, has urged the people in Niger Delta region to embrace peace, security and sanity to grow the economy.

Peterside said this on Tuesday at a stakeholders’ meeting between the management of NIMASA and stakeholders meeting in Warri in Delta State.

The director-general, who is from the Niger Delta, said that there was need to address insecurity in the Niger Delta region for business to flourish.

Following his widely publicized statement demanding the resignation of National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress, APC, Chief John Odigie-Oyegun, National Leader of the party, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, has denied a media report that he “bombed” President Muhammadu Buhari.

Tinubu was quoted to have made some remarks about Buhari, including that the latter begged him to emerge president in 2015.

In a statement by the Tinubu Media Office yesterday, Jagaban as fondly called, stated that the story was concocted by political enemies.

Yaya Toure says FIFA ‘complacent’ in fight against racism


Manchester City midfielder, Yaya Toure, has said FIFA’s decision to end a racism task force makes him wonder if the world football governing body is really serious about handling racial abuse in the game.

The FIFA Taskforce Against Racism and Discrimination were established in 2013 to instigate strategies against racism.

Last week, FIFA secretary general, Fatma Samoura, stated that the task force had “clearly fulfilled” its objectives.

The management of the University of Ibadan on Wednesday said it had no intention to make life unbearable for the university community through the recent screening exercise introduced at the institution’s gates.

2019 Election may not Hold - Senate reveals


The Senate yesterday expressed the fear that the 2019 general elections may suffer serious hitches. Its apprehension was born out of what it considered as critical issues of illegitimacy bedeviling the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

With the absence of Resident Electoral Commissioners (RECs) in 20 of the 36 states, the Senate noted that the INEC cannot conduct any legitimate election at the moment.

Adopting a motion sponsored by the Deputy President of the Senate, Ike Ekweremadu, the upper chamber observed that the non-appointment of RECs to fill the 20 vacancies is in breach of Section 14 (2) of the Third Schedule of the 1999 Constitution, as amended.

A former Inspector General of Police, Sir Etim Inyang is dead. He died in Lagos on Monday. A family source who spoke on condition of anonymity confirmed that the former police chief died after a brief illness. He died at the age 85.

Sir Etim Okon lnyang, born on 25 December 1931 was appointed IGP in 1983 to succeed Sunday Adewusi and was succeeded by Muhammadu Gambo Jimeta in 1986.

Breaking | Former Israeli President, Shimon Peres Dies at 93


Shimon Peres, one of Israel’s defining political figures and a Nobel peace prize laureate, has died at the age of 93, two weeks after having a stroke.

Peres had twice served as prime minister of Israel and later as the country’s ninth president. He had been seriously ill on a respirator in an Israeli hospital near Tel Aviv and died after his condition deteriorated sharply.

His defining achievement was as one of the key architects of the Oslo peace accords, for which he was jointly awarded the Nobel peace prize with the then Israeli prime minister, Yitzhak Rabin, and Yasser Arafat, the chairman of the Palestine Liberation Organisation.
