Actor Kalu Ikeagwu issues statement after reports of his arrest by Police


It was reported yesterday that actor Kalu Ikeagwu was arrested by the police following a robbery and homicide case. He has released a statement stating what exactly happened.

Just to clear the air, I have this to say. I was literally abducted at gunpoint by earring wearing men purported to be policemen (they were five) in an unmarked Hiace bus with civilian number plates and fake identity cards. They first claimed to be working on an abduction Abuja case which changed to a robbery case, all while in transit.

Malam Nasir El-Rufai did not visit Edo State today, Wednesday, 28 September 2016. Contrary to the fiction peddled by one of the candidates who made the accusation on live television. Edo State Governor Adams Oshiomhole has kindly rubbished the lie and made clear that Malam Nasir El-Rufai is nowhere near the state.

This clarification is made only to affirm a material fact. But it is important to stress that the laws of this country do not prevent any citizen from being in any part of the country. While movement may be restricted on election days, that is not the same thing as construing the presence of any citizen in a state holding elections as illegal, unusual or irregular.

Goalkeeper Steward Leopold arrested after 22 doses of heroin was found in his home


Mauritius international goalkeeper, Joseph Kinsley Steward Leopold who was part of the country's team at the last Africa Cup of Nations qualifying campaign has been arrested by the Mauritius' Anti-drug Smuggling Police Unit after they found 22 doses of heroin,  razor blades, scales and materials used to package drugs in his Port Louis home.

NDDC to create 6,300 jobs in online marketing for Niger Delta youths


The Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) has earmarked 6,300 jobs for youths in the Niger Delta region.

Beneficiaries of the scheme that will include unemployed youths, university undergraduates as well as persons in employment who desire to earn more cash, will be trained by online marketing giant, KONGA.

According to the NDDC acting managing director, Mrs Ibim Semenitari, the entrepreneurship training will create jobs and offer financial stability to families.

Oh Dear! Petrol tanker driver kill six persons while trying to runaway from Police (PHOTO)


Six persons meet their untimely death when a petrol tanker driver trying to run away from police patrol checks rammed into innocent persons.

The driver of the truck, who was said to have been driving with one headlamp, in a hurry to escape from police arrest, sped off and crashed into the pavement, thereby ramming into where tricycles gathered to pick passengers to Uyo, the state capital.

Eyewitness accounts said that, it was at that point that a tricycle was trapped and all the passengers inside died in the ensuing inferno.

Nyesom Wike urges police to Weed out bad eggs


Rivers State Governor, Chief Ezebunwo Nyesom Wike, has advised the Police High Command to take urgent steps to weed out bad eggs from its ranks.

This is as the assistant Inspector-General of Police in-charge of Zone 6, Mr Abubakar Marafa, has declared the support of the Zonal Command to the amnesty programme of the Rivers State Government repentant cultists in the state.

Wike, who spoke yesterday when Marafa paid him a courtesy call at Government House, Port Harcourt, noted that the bad eggs in the police structure negatively affect the implementation of security measures.

Godwin Emefiele tells Afreximbank, Nigerian banks remain strong


The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has reiterated that the nation’s Deposit Money Banks are strong despite the ongoing challenges in the foreign exchange market.

CBN Governor, Godwin Emefiele, at the third quarterly meetings of the Board of Directors of the African Export-Import Bank (Afreximbank), in Lagos, yesterday, reaffirmed that the country’s banks remained strong.

The reaffirmation may have become necessary, as the regional trade bank appeared to have several business interests in the country, with more recently, a $150 million facility granted Heritage Bank Plc.

Brazilian police on Monday arrested Antonio Palocci, a powerful former finance minister and presidential chief of staff in recent Workers Party (PT) governments, as a sweeping anti-corruption probe hit even harder at the left-leaning party.

Prosecutors said at a news conference that Palocci acted as a liaison between the PT and Brazil’s largest engineering and construction conglomerate, Odebrecht SA [ODBES.UL], from 2006 to 2013 in a kickback scheme centered on contracts at state-led oil company Petroleo Brasileiro SA, or Petrobras.

The Nigerian Army has refuted the report that Boko Haram insurgents have hoisted flags in some communities near Chibok, Borno State.

A statement by the army spokesman, Col. Sani Usman, said the troops of the Operations Lafiya Dole are maintaining a high level of vigilance in and around the area to forestall infiltration by the terrorists.

The Director-General, Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency, Dr. Dakuku Peterside, has urged the people in Niger Delta region to embrace peace, security and sanity to grow the economy.

Peterside said this on Tuesday at a stakeholders’ meeting between the management of NIMASA and stakeholders meeting in Warri in Delta State.

The director-general, who is from the Niger Delta, said that there was need to address insecurity in the Niger Delta region for business to flourish.

Following his widely publicized statement demanding the resignation of National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress, APC, Chief John Odigie-Oyegun, National Leader of the party, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, has denied a media report that he “bombed” President Muhammadu Buhari.

Tinubu was quoted to have made some remarks about Buhari, including that the latter begged him to emerge president in 2015.

Manchester City midfielder, Yaya Toure, has said FIFA’s decision to end a racism task force makes him wonder if the world football governing body is really serious about handling racial abuse in the game.

The FIFA Taskforce Against Racism and Discrimination were established in 2013 to instigate strategies against racism.

Last week, FIFA secretary general, Fatma Samoura, stated that the task force had “clearly fulfilled” its objectives.
