2019 Election may not Hold - Senate reveals


The Senate yesterday expressed the fear that the 2019 general elections may suffer serious hitches. Its apprehension was born out of what it considered as critical issues of illegitimacy bedeviling the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

With the absence of Resident Electoral Commissioners (RECs) in 20 of the 36 states, the Senate noted that the INEC cannot conduct any legitimate election at the moment.

Adopting a motion sponsored by the Deputy President of the Senate, Ike Ekweremadu, the upper chamber observed that the non-appointment of RECs to fill the 20 vacancies is in breach of Section 14 (2) of the Third Schedule of the 1999 Constitution, as amended.

A former Inspector General of Police, Sir Etim Inyang is dead. He died in Lagos on Monday. A family source who spoke on condition of anonymity confirmed that the former police chief died after a brief illness. He died at the age 85.

Sir Etim Okon lnyang, born on 25 December 1931 was appointed IGP in 1983 to succeed Sunday Adewusi and was succeeded by Muhammadu Gambo Jimeta in 1986.

Shimon Peres, one of Israel’s defining political figures and a Nobel peace prize laureate, has died at the age of 93, two weeks after having a stroke.

Peres had twice served as prime minister of Israel and later as the country’s ninth president. He had been seriously ill on a respirator in an Israeli hospital near Tel Aviv and died after his condition deteriorated sharply.

His defining achievement was as one of the key architects of the Oslo peace accords, for which he was jointly awarded the Nobel peace prize with the then Israeli prime minister, Yitzhak Rabin, and Yasser Arafat, the chairman of the Palestine Liberation Organisation.

Samsung adhere to CPC’s directives to recall Galaxy Note 7 devices


Samsung Electronics West Africa Limited has complied with the ultimatum given to it by the Consumer Protection Council (CPC), requiring it to give a status report on the global recall of Galaxy Note 7 in Nigeria, following reports of an explosion of dozens of the device while charging.

A statement by the CPC on Tuesday morning said the company disclosed that the device was yet to be launched in Nigeria, and had announced its readiness to provide a voluntary exchange to consumers, who may have purchased it elsewhere in the world and brought it into Nigeria.

The Minister of Budget and National Planning, Sen. Udoma Udo Udoma, says Nigeria’s foreign reserves have reduced from $26.51 billion in the second quarter of 2016 to $24.74 billion in September.
Udoma on Tuesday said this at the 57th annual conference of Nigerian Economic Society with the theme “the developmental state and diversification of the Nigerian economy”.

He said Nigeria had revenue and foreign currency concentration problems, adding that diversification was the only solution.

No fewer than four people were reported dead and two missing after an helicopter crashed en route a Chevron oil platform, off the Angolan coast, the U.S. oil company said on Tuesday.

The helicopter was said to have left Malongo port in Angola’s Cabinda province on Monday at 1523 local time to make the short journey to the Tombua-Landana offshore oil platform, but never arrived.

More than 80 million people viewed Monday's first presidential debate between Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump, making it the most watched debate ever, according to Nielsen research.

The previous record was the only debate between Republican Ronald Reagan and President Jimmy Carter in 1980, which drew 80 million in an era with far few channels and no Internet. In 2012, the first debate between President Obama and Mitt Romney in 2012 drew 67 million viewers.

The 80 million number doesn't include numerous streaming options made available.

Lagos State | Chief Judge frees 20 inmates from Ikoyi Prisons


The Lagos State Chief Judge, Justice Oluwafumilayo Atilade, in exercise of her constitutional powers on Tuesday, released 20 inmates of Ikoyi Prisons awaiting trial.

Atilade made the pronouncement at a mini-court session conducted at the prisons, where she told the inmates to ‘Go and sin no more’.

The gesture was part of activities to mark the 2016/2017 legal year.
