Irate church worshippers mobbed and strip motorcycles thieves in Anambra State

Dino Melaye names Minister who 'helped' MTN move $13.92bn out of Nigeria


The Chairman, Senate Committee on the FCT, Senator Dino Melaye (APC, Kogi West) has accused the Minister of Industry, Trade and Investment, Dr. Okechukwu Enelamah, of colluding with ‎MTN to illegally move $13.92billion out of Nigeria between 2006 and 2016 to the company’s home country of South Africa.

Melaye had under Order 42 of the Senate rule last Thursday, alleged that MTN Nigeria was involved in gross money laundering, claiming that “between 2006 and 2016, the MTN Nigeria, in collaboration with four commercial banks and with the help of a serving Minister, has moved over $12bn out of this country”.

Jihadist, Ahmad al-Faqi al-Mahdi bags 9 years for Timbuktu attacks


War crimes judges on Tuesday sentenced a Malian jihadist to nine years in jail for destroying the fabled shrines of Timbuktu, in a landmark ruling experts hope will help safeguard the world’s vulnerable monuments.

Judges at the International Criminal Court in The Hague found Ahmad al-Faqi al-Mahdi guilty of directing the 2012 attacks on the Unesco world heritage site in northern Mali.

APC Chairman, Odigie-Oyegun says Tinubu’s allegations not true


The National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress, Chief John Odigie-Oyegun, has said he will not take issue with the National Leader of the party, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu.

He, however, said “most” of the allegations in the media report were “not true,” noting that the party would focus on the September 28 governorship election in Edo State, which he said was his “priority”.

Odigie-Oyegun said this on Monday in Benin in response to the call by the former Lagos State governor for his removal.

Gabon | Ali Bongo sworn-in as President


Ali Bongo was sworn-in Tuesday as Gabon’s president after the country’s top court controversially validated his fiercely contested election win, taking his family’s reign over the oil-rich country into a fifth decade.

Nigerian Navy patrol team deployed by NNS Jubilee, in Akwa Ibom state, has arrested three oil thieves around Prime Energy, just as another patrol team has also arrested three people suspected to be involved in illegal oil bunkering.

A statement by the Director Information, Nigerian Navy, Commodore Christian Ezekobe, said that the suspected oil thieves were caught conveying 10 drums of allegedly stolen Premium Motor Spirits (PMS) and five drums of suspected illegally refined Automotive Gas Oil (AGO) in three-speed boats.

Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton clashed in unusually personal terms during a taboo-breaking first general-election presidential debate on Monday evening, with Clinton accusing Trump of pushing “racist lies” about President Obama’s birthplace, and Trump accusing Clinton of lacking the “stamina” to be president.
“She doesn’t have the look. She doesn’t have the stamina. I said she doesn’t have the stamina. I don’t believe she does have the stamina,” Trump said, when moderator Lester Holt asked him about a past comment that Clinton lacked a presidential “look.” “You have to be able to negotiate our trade deals …I don’t believe that Hillary has the stamina.”

A section of the Onuebum Road leading to Otuoke, former President, Dr. Goodluck Jonathan’s home town in Ogbia Local Government Area of Bayelsa State, has been taken over by flood.

Nigeria sinks down in top investment destination in Africa


Nigeria has given in its number five spot to Kenya as it slipped to number six in the list of top 10 investment destinations in Africa.

Nigeria had held her current position (6th) in 2011, according to the sixth edition of Rand Merchant Bank’s (RMB’s) annual report.

The latest RMB report blamed current recession for Nigeria’s slip, noting that the economy has been weighed down by a dismal economic growth outlook and weak operating environment. Nigeria is going through its first recession in over 20 years, triggered by low oil prices.

Germany | Authorities blocks WhatsApp data transfers to Facebook


German data protection authorities on Tuesday said they had blocked Facebook from collecting subscriber data from its subsidiary WhatsApp, citing privacy concerns.

Facebook and WhatsApp promised in the wake of the Silicon Valley giant’s 2014 acquisition of the messaging app that they would not share data, Hamburg’s Commissioner for Data Protection and Freedom of Information Johannes Caspar recalled in a statement.

He added that Facebook would be required to delete any data already received from WhatsApp in Germany.

Nigerian Navy denies allegations of human rights abuse


The Nigerian Navy has denied allegations of human rights abuse levelled against it by the proprietor of a Lagos based building construction company.

Briefing the National Human Rights Commission which had summoned the Navy on the issue, the Managing Director of Navy Building and Construction Company Limited, Commodore Abdul Adamu, said the Navy was a disciplined force and do not involve in any form‎ of human rights abuse in any part of Nigeria.

He admitted that the Nigerian Navy had a business relationship with Lexy Nigeria Limited which ‎was now a subject of dispute before an arbitration panel in Lagos.

Colombia and FARC sign historic peace accord ending 52-year war


Colombian President Juan Manuel Santos and Marxist rebel leader Timochenko used a pen made from a bullet on Monday to sign an agreement ending a half-century war that killed a quarter of a million people and made their nation a byword for violence.

After four years of negotiations in Havana, Santos, 65, and Timochenko – a nom de guerre for 57-year-old revolutionary Rodrigo Londono – shook hands on Monday on Colombian soil for the first time.

Some 2,500 foreign and local dignitaries attended the ceremony in the walled, colonial city of Cartagena.
