Charlotte and Tulsa shootings: What police and the families said


Protests broke out in Charlotte, N.C., Tuesday evening after a black man was killed by a police officer, just days after another officer-involved shooting in Tulsa. 

In both cases, police said they felt threatened and were forced to take lethal action. 

In Charlotte, police said the man shot by police, Keith Lamont Scott, 43, was holding a gun, while family members say he was reading a book.

Recession | Nigeria’s Debt Rises by N4.17tn in one Year


The country’s debt profile has risen to N16.29tn, the Debt Management Office has said.

Statistics obtained from the DMO on Tuesday showed that the country’s total debt liability had risen to N16.29tn as of June 30, 2016. As of June 2015, the country’s total debt stood at N12.12tn.

This means that within the one-year period (July 2015 to June 2016), the country’s total debt rose by N4.17tn, or 34.41 per cent.

A breakdown of the country’s debt profile shows that external debt by the federal and state governments stood at $11.26bn or N3.19tn as of June 30, 2016. It was $10.32bn or N2.03tn by July last year.

A refugee boat carrying 600 people bound for Europe has capsized off the coast of Egypt, killing at least 29 people.

Local officials said 150 of the 600 had been rescued, describing it as one of the largest operation off Egypt’s coast in the Mediterranean refugee crisis so far.

A 42-year-old businessman, Livinus Uwa, has told an Igando Customary Court in Lagos that he married a thief.

Uwa made this known when he testified in his divorce petition against his wife, Chineye, on Wednesday in Lagos.

Doctor in Court for duping a woman of N66.9m


Justice Oluwatoyin Ipaye of the Lagos State High Court, Ikeja, has remanded a self-styled doctor, Innocent Chukwu, and a woman, Mrs. Obiageli Anachebe, who allegedly defrauded a businesswoman of a total sum of N66,900,000.00.

Justice Ipaye made the order following the defendants’ not guilty plea and adjourned till October 14, for the hearing of their bail applications.

Donald Trump used charity funds to pay legal settlements


Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump used funds from his charitable foundation to pay settlements in legal cases involving his businesses, an apparent violation of laws governing non-profits, The Washington Post reported Tuesday.

The cases involved a combined $258,000 paid out by the Donald J. Trump Foundation — a charity almost entirely funded with other people’s money, the newspaper said — and follow a review of legal documents and the foundation’s tax records.

Amnesty International accuses Nigeria SARS of horrific torture and bribery


Amnesty International has accused the Special Anti-Robbery Squad, a unit of the Nigeria Police Force, of torturing suspects and demanding bribes to free them.

In a report published on its website on Wednesday, the group alleged that officers attached to SARS were getting rich from lucrative bribes.

The report alleged that detainees were subjected to “horrific torture methods, including hanging, starvation, beatings, shootings and mock executions, at the hands of corrupt SARS officers.

Official: UEFA unveils Euro 2020 logo in London


UEFA has released the official logo for the 2020 European Championship at a ceremony in London.

Euro 2020 is set to be hosted across 13 countries with London’s Wembley Stadium staging the semifinals and final.

It is being played across the continent to mark the 60th anniversary of the tournament, with host cities including Munich, Rome, Amsterdam, Dublin, Glasgow, Bilbao, Copenhagen and St Petersburg.

South Africa’s Nobel laureate Desmond Tutu discharged from hospital


South African anti-apartheid leader and Nobel Peace laureate Desmond Tutu has been discharged from hospital September 20, 2016, following his re-admission on Saturday, his family said.

Archbishop Tutu, 84, had returned to the hospital in Cape Town as surgical wounds had shown signs of infection after he underwent an operation two weeks ago.

Borno State | Survey reveals 99 percent IDPs lack access to food


About 99 percent of internally displaced persons (IDPs) in Borno State lacked access to food and clean water supply compared to their counterpart in Yobe where 87 per cent also lacked access to food and water, a Situational Assessment Survey on IDPs in North-East conducted by NOI Polls has revealed.

Also, 93 per cent of IDPs in unofficial camps lacked access to food compared to others in official camps where about 71 percent do not have access to food, just as there are about 2.1 million IDP’s residing in about 13 states in Nigeria.

Boko Haram rated ‘world’s most dreaded terrorist group’


Two United States, U.S-based humanitarian organisations, 21st Century Wilberforce Initiative and Stefanus Foundation, have identified Boko Haram as the most lethal terrorist group in the world.

The organisations disclosed this to a group of journalists while speaking about the challenges faced by victims of terrorism in Nigeria.

According to the Executive Director of the Stefanus Foundation, Mark Lipdo, “Global Terrorism index shows that Boko Haram is the world’s most lethal terrorist group, followed by ISIS, while Al-Qaeda ranks third and the Fulani militants mostly in the middle belt rank 4th”.

A man simply identified as Alhaji Giwa, has been accused of raping and impregnating an under-aged orphan, Maimuna in Birnin ruwa village of Sokoto State.

A Nigerian journalist with DW Radio Hausa Service in Germany, Faruk Muhammad Yabo, who shared the story on his Facebook page, alleged that the Alhaji abandoned Maimuna after the act.

Three suspects, Nnamdi Nweke, a welder apprentice, Chibuzor Mouto, an orange seller and Ikechukwu Okafor, a groundnut seller on Sunday were arrested by men of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps in Anambra State for allegedly vandalizing electric cables at Agu-Awka line.

The suspects who are all from Awka were paraded at the Corps’ headquarters in the State.

28-year-old native doctor caught with human parts says police were able to arrest him because his charm travelled


Police in Abia have arrested a 28-year-old man, who claimed to be a native doctor, for allegedly being in possession of some human parts.

The Commissioner of Police in the state, Mr Leye Oyebade, told newsmen in Umuahia on Tuesday that the suspect was arrested for “unlawful possession” of a human skull and bone.

Oyebade said that the suspect was arrested in his home in Olokoro, in Umuahia South Local Government Area of the state, following a tip-off from members of the public.
