First US-Cuba passenger flight arrives in more than 50 years

A JetBlue Airways Corp passenger jet landed in the central Cuban city of Santa Clara on Wednesday, becoming the first scheduled commercial passenger flight from the United States to the island in more than a half century.

The arrival of the Airbus A320 from Fort Lauderdale, Florida, opened another chapter in the Obama administration's efforts to improve ties and increase trade and travel with the former Cold War foe. The Obama administration hopes regular scheduled flights will usher in an era of more routine travel to and from the Communist-ruled island.

The 61-20 vote capped a year-long power struggle between Rousseff's long-governing leftist government and opposition senators and comes less than two weeks after the Rio Olympics, which highlighted Brazil but also put the country's economic and political woes on international display.

The Senate suspended Rousseff in May on charges that she used illegal budgetary maneuvers to hide the extent of the country's financial problems. Brazil's once-booming economy slumped into a deep recession after a global slowdown sent prices plummeting for commodities it exports to the world.

Lawyers hail FG’s stripping of police power to prosecute criminal cases

Lawyers in Lagos have given a groundswell of support to the Federal Government’s reform of the criminal justice system barring the police from prosecuting criminal cases in the country.

The Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Mr Abubakar Malami, SAN, had on Aug. 25 stripped the police of power to prosecute criminal cases.

The action was in line with the provisions of Section 106 of the Administration of Criminal Justice Act 2015, he said.

Gene Wilder, the star of such comedy classics as "Young Frankenstein" and "Blazing Saddles," has died. He was 83.

Wilder's nephew said Monday that the actor and writer died earlier this month in Stamford, Connecticut from complications from Alzheimer's disease.
