Niger State | Government to incorporate sports in schools curriculum


The Niger State Government on Wednesday said it would incorporate sports into the curriculum of its primary and secondary schools.

Alhaji Mamman Bosso, the State Commissioner for Youths and Sports Development, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Minna that this would encourage talented youths to get acquainted at the early stage of their lives.

NAFDAC shutdown bakery overuse of potassium bromide


The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) in Niger said it had sealed a bakery in Lapai Area Council of the state for using potassium bromide for baking bread.

Mr Anikoh Ibrahim, the State Coordinator of NAFDAC, disclosed this on Wednesday in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Minna.

He said the action was taken during an unscheduled visit to the bakery.

Rommy Ezeonwuka calls for Sports Minister's Resignation


Following the poor performance of Team Nigeria at the just-concluded Rio Olympics, the proprietor of Rojenny Stadium, Oba, Anambra, Rommy Ezeonwuka, has urged the Minister of Sports, Solomon Dalung, to resign.

Ezeonwuka in Awka on Wednesday said that resignation was the “best apology or explanation that will be acceptable to lovers of sports in Nigeria from the minister”.

NSCDC laments begging among IDPs


The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) has decried high rate of street begging among Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) in Borno and vowed to end it.

The state Commandant of NSCDC, Alhaji Abdullahi Ibrahim stated this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Wednesday in Maiduguri.

Nigerian Copyright Commission nabs 15 pirates, seizes goods worth N60m


The Lagos zonal office of the Nigerian Copyright Commission (NCC), has arrested 15 suspected pirates and seized goods worth N60 million in the last seven months.

Mr Uwem Udoh, the Zonal Manager, on Wednesday in Lagos said that the commission carried out the anti-piracy raids in Ojo, Somolu, and Festac town.

He said that the action was also extended to some major markets in the state.

Lagos State Internal Revenue Service seals Protea Hotel


The Lagos State Internal Revenue Service (LIRS) has sealed Protea Hotel, close to Kuramo Waters, over alleged failure to remit N11.07 million personal income taxes deducted from workers’ salaries.

Mrs. Ajibike Oshodi-Sholola, Head, Distrain Unit of LIRS, disclosed this to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) during a state-wide tax law enforcement exercise in Lagos on Wednesday.

Protea Hotel was sealed by the revenue service over evasion of N148.88 million consumption and hotel occupancy taxes on June 9.

A welding gas explosion in Damaturu on Wednesday killed one person and caused panic, making people scamper for safety.

Lt. George Okupe, the Army spokesman in the state, confirmed the incident to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN).

29-year-old Frenchman stabs British woman to death while shouting “Allahu Akbar”


A 29-year-old Frenchman shouted “Allahu Akbar” (God is Greatest) as he stabbed a British woman to death and wounded two people at a backpackers’ hotel in Australia, police said on Wednesday.

The police said that the man was in Australia on a valid tourist visa.

The officials said that he had no known links to radical groups such as Islamic State, which had urged its followers to carry out attacks with knives or other readily available weapons.

Abike Dabiri charge Nigerians in Diaspora to improve Nigerian economy


Mrs Abike Dabiri-Erewa, the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Foreign Affairs and the Diaspora, on Wednesday, advised Nigerians in foreign lands to help to improve the economy.

Dabiri-Erewa said this at the International Symposium on Oladudah Equiano held at the conference hall of the Administrative Staff College of Nigeria (ASCON), Topo, Badagry.

The symposium was one of the events to mark the Badagry Diaspora Festival 2016.

Sen. Shehu Sani, chairman, Senate Committee on Foreign and Domestic debts, has condemned the abduction of Mr Ibrahim Ismail a lawmaker in Kaduna State House of Assembly.

In a statement he issued to senate correspondents on Wednesday in Abuja, Sani noted that the rising cases of kidnapping, particularly in the North had become a serious national security problem.

Army Arrest 3 Suspects after raid on Avengers Camp


Security Operatives of the ‘Operation Delta Safe’ made a ground-breaking raid of a militant camp on Wednesday during which they arrested three suspected members of the Niger Delta Avengers, who were part of the group that attacked 343 troops located at Nembe.

The Avengers had attacked the troops on August 8, 2016, and killed four soldiers.

However, the ODS operatives led by Rear Admiral Joseph Okojie, acting on a tip-off, were able to track them to their camp at Epebu Creek in Southern Ijaw Local Government Area in Bayelsa.

Troops Foils Boko Haram Attack at Darul Jamel (PHOTOS)


Troops on Operation LAFIYA DOLE stationed at Darul Jamel, on the fringes of Sambisa forest, northern parts of Borno State, yesterday(22nd August) evening successfully repelled an attempted attack on their location by remnants of Boko Haram terrorists.

The terrorists attempted to storm the troops location at about 10.00pm, but paid dearly as the troops killed several of them including two senior commanders that led the attack.

The Imo State Police command on Monday arrested one Mrs Ngozi Anyanwu and her son, Goodluck Anyanwu, for allegedly stealing a baby boy from a maternity clinic in Isiala Mbano LGA of the state.

Parading them before newsmen, the Imo state Commissioner, Taiwo Lakanu said that he received the news of the disappearance of a newborn baby on August 19, 2016, and efforts were immediately put in place to recover the child and arrest the Kidnappers. This turned out successful 48 hours later.

An earthquake of 6.8 magnitude struck central Myanmar on Wednesday, U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) said, shaking buildings across the country and the region.

The quake struck 143 km (88 miles) west of the city of Meiktila at a depth of 84 km (52 miles), the agency said.
