Bukola Saraki hires maid, nurse for Rasheed Yekini’s mother

The Senate President, Dr Bukola Saraki, has hired a maid and a nurse to take care of the late Rasheed Yekini’s mother, Alhaja Sikirat Yekini.

Saraki, represented by the Director of Football, Abubakar Bukola Saraki FC, Alloy Chukwuemeka, disclosed this on Friday in Ijagbo, Oyun Local Government Area of the state.

He also donated a tricycle to the younger brother of late Rasheed Yekini, Hakeem.

United Nations says Food aid demand in Northeast could double in a month

The number of people in northeast Nigeria who need food aid could nearly double within a month, as the Boko Haram insurgency and economic pressures intensify suffering, the UN said Friday.

A crisis fuelled by years of radical Islamist violence has left more than three million people in the northeast “in a state of moderate or severe food insecurity,” said Bettina Luescher, spokeswoman for the UN’s World Food Programme.

But tough economic conditions in Nigeria caused by low oil prices and surging inflation could see that number rise to 5.5 million “next month”, Luescher told reporters in Geneva.

Two members of a kidnap gang were caught by a combined team of policemen, local vigilante and hunters. According to Abia Facts Newspaper, the kidnappers identified as Obiora and Livinus, natives of Umuanu in Ndia Agu kidnapped a grandmother, killed and buried her in the bush after collecting the sum of Five million naira from her family. No further details were given on the victim.

Justice James Omo-Agege dies at 83

A former Delta State Chief Judge, Honorable Justice James Omo-Agege, has died. According to family sources, the legal luminary died after a brief illness yesterday evening August 18th. He was the state Chief Judge from October 1993 to November 1998. May his soul rest in peace, Amen.

Boko Haram | US Secretary of State to visits Nigeria

The U.S. Secretary of State, John Kerry, is expected in Nigeria on Aug. 23 to discuss U.S. cooperation with Nigeria over Boko Haram, economy and human rights issues.

A statement issued by the Information Office of the Embassy of the U.S. on Friday in Abuja, said Kerry would hold meetings with President Muhammadu Buhari and Northern Governors.

According to it, the Secretary will travel to Sokoto and Abuja on Aug. 23 to 24.

1,600 cases of pipeline vandalism recorded since January – Minister

The Minister of State for Petroleum Resources, Dr. Ibe Kachikwu, says Nigeria recorded 1,600 cases of pipeline vandalism since January.

Kachikwu disclosed this at the 2016 Annual Conference of the National Association of Energy Correspondents, with the theme: “Low Oil Price: Impact and the Way Forward.” The conference was held in Lagos on Thursday.

The minister also revealed that the country recorded over 3,000 pipeline vandalism cases from 2010 to 2015 and added that the impact of attacks on oil and gas pipelines was that there was no money to fund the 2016 budget.

Lawyer seeks special salary structure for teachers

Mr Jimoh Abdulrasaq, Ilorin based legal practitioner, has called on the Federal Government to place teachers in public schools on a special salary structure to improve the quality of their service.

Abdulrasaq disclosed in Ilorin on Friday that the education system in the country was parlous and needed to be improved.

One Chike Nnaemeka has been arrested by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission EFCC for allegedly tricking an official of the Federal Road Safety Corps into marrying him and paying for the wedding.

Nnaemeka, aka Dr. Justified, was said to have duped his victim, Nkechi Ani, of N6.7m.

The EFCC, in a statement by its spokesman, Mr. Wilson Uwujaren, said Nnaemeka, who claimed to be a gynaecologist, allegedly collected the sum under different requests. The victim was reportedly introduced to him by one of her classmates at the Federal Polytechnic, Oko, Anambra State.

More than 5 million Nigerians live abroad – EU

Mr Richard Young, Deputy Head of Department, the European Union in Nigeria, says more than 5 million Nigerians are living abroad of which half of them are in Sub-Saharan Africa. Young made the statement on Thursday in Abuja at the unveiling of the National Policy on Labour Migration. He said that Nigeria and four other countries which include India, China, Philippines and Mexico had been mentioned by the World Bank as top recipients of global remittance in 2012.
