Say What | FG wants Nigerians to be paying 9% tax on calls, SMS, MMS, Data, others


Minister of Communication, Bayo Shittu, yesterday disclosed that the Federal government is proposing to introduce a bill called the Communication Service Tax CST bill which seeks to levy 9% on telecommunication subscribers for users of various communication services such as voice call, SMS, MMS, Data usage from telecommunication service providers, internet service providers and Pay TV Stations.

The South East Zonal office of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, on Thursday August 18 2016, released N500,000 recovered fund to a fraud victim, Dr. Mrs. Veronica Ibeziako. Ibeziako, a retired Chief Magistrate in Anambra State, was swindled while she sort for financial assistance to enable her proceed for medical treatment abroad.

President Buhari this morning declared open the Annual Meeting of the Association of African Central Banks (AACB) holding in Abuja. He was received by Nigeria's Central Ban governor, Godwin Emefiele, Chairman Senate committee on banking, insurance and other financial institutions, Senator Rafiu Ibrahim, Minister of Finance Kemi Adeosun and Central Bank Governors from other African countries.

Ebonyi State | Many feared dead in failed jail break


A failed jail break attempt may have resulted in the death of many prisoners at the Abakaliki prison in Ebonyi state this morning. According to reports, the inmates at about 9am started an intense riot in the prison over poor feeding and living condition.

During their protest, the inmates reportedly used dangerous objects on some of the prison officers.

Abisoye Taiwo, a 100 level student of Forestry and Wildlife Management of the Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta (FUNAAB) in Ogun state was reportedly killed today after a peaceful protest by students of the school degenerated. 

The students were staging a protest over insecurity on campus as some robbers attacked some hostels in the school last night, killing a 100 level Banking and Finance student in the process. 

OMG! 35-year-old married woman commits suicide in Ogun state


A 35-year-old married woman identified as Omolola Atejioye committed suicide by hanging herself inside her home at Ago-Iwoye road, Ilishan-Remo, in Ikenne Local Government Area of Ogun state on Tuesday August 16th. According to Tribune, the husband of the deceased came back home from work to find his wife's lifeless body dangling from their ceiling. She did not leave behind any suicide note.

A musician in Switzerland is angry after she was prohibited from flying to the United States because she did not have a separate visa for his violin.

35-year-old Jane Bevan of Zurich said that she bought two tickets on a British Airways flight to Baltimore, Maryland, but at the last minute, she was notified that her musical instrument cannot board the plane because it had no visa.

1,042 registers for mass wedding in Kano


The Kano State Hisbah Board said on Thursday that it had registered 1, 042 prospective couples in 18 local government areas of the state for the state government’s mass wedding programme.

The Director-General of the board, Dr Abba Sufi, in Kano said that all the prospective couples were registered at the board’s headquarters.

Sufi, however, said the board was still awaiting the list of registered couples from the remaining 26 local government areas.

The convict, who pleaded guilty to the two-count charge of criminal trespass and theft, told the court that his devilish mind led him to steal.

INEC to conclude suspended Rivers election in October


Mrs Amina Zakari, INEC National Commissioner in charge of election operations, has assured of the commission’s readiness to conclude suspended elections in Rivers in October.

Zakari gave the assurance on Thursday in Port Harcourt at a stakeholders meeting with political parties, candidates and security agencies.

She said that the commission convened the meeting to resolve factors which led to inconclusive elections in the past, and to conclude the process.

Police parade kidnappers of National Assembly lawmaker


The Nigeria police have paraded three suspected kidnappers who allegedly kidnap a member of the National Assembly, Sani Bello early this month.

The kidnappers were paraded at the Force Headquarters in Abuja, North-Central Nigeria on Thursday.

The suspects are Haruna Adamu, 25, who is the gang leader; Shaibu Adamu, 18, and Abubakar Saidu, 30.

Avengers’ spokesperson, Mudoch Agbinibo in a statement on its website said if President Muhammadu Buhari failed to restructure the country before October 1, the group would declare a republic.

Agbinibo said the Buhari’s led government had failed Nigerians as policies executed by his government had been misdirected.

Ekiti State | Court rejects Governor Fayose’s bid to stop probe


An Ekiti state High Court on Thursday rejected an ex parte order sought by the Ayo Fayose administration to restrain the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) from investigating the finances of the state.

The motion to stop the anti-graft agency from investigating the accounts of the state government was filed by the Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Owoseni Ajayi.
