The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Yakubu Dogara, has shunned the invitation of the police Special Investigating Panel over allegations of budget padding.

It was reliably gathered on Wednesday that the Speaker did not honour the police invitation because the letter was not signed by the Inspector-General of Police, Ibrahim Idris.

UNESCO DG, Irina Bokova Arrives Nigeria On 3-day Working Visit


Ms Irina Bokova, UNESCO Director-General, arrived Nigeria on Wednesday, on a three-day working visit.

She was received at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja, by Mrs Folashade Yemi-Esan, the Permanent Secretary, Federal Ministry of Education and Hajia Mariam Katagum, Nigeria’s Permanent Delegate to UNESCO.

The Ministry of Education has released a new schedule of fees for all Unity Schools in the country.

The announcement was made since June 2016, contrary to the claim by the Minister of Education, Adamu Adamu, that there was no raise.

The disclosure by parents that the government had increased fees from N25,000 to about N70,000 per term, sparked controversy last week.

Cement truck falls off on Zamfara-Sokoto highway (PHOTOS)


A truck fully loaded with cement skidded and somersaulted some few kilometers away from Talatan Mafara along Zamfara-Sokoto Highway. According to officials of Nema Sokoto who rushed to the scene for a rescue mission, no one was trapped inside the truck when they arrived but were informed that the driver who was seriously injured was taken to the hospital for treatment.

The woman who was caught having sex with another woman's husband and subsequently humiliated in a viral video has filed a criminal charge over the matter.

Saranya Sae-han, 24, (pictured) on Monday asked police to prosecute Viraluk Sutthiprapa, for filming her as she was physically ejected from the condominium Viraluk shared with her husband.

Starting on October 1st, FRSC will implement use of speed limit devices on all commercial vehicles


The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) will on October 1st commence the enforcement of use of speed limiters on all commercial vehicles nationwide. Corps Marshal of FRSC, Boboye Oyeyemi announced this during a meeting held at the FRSC National Headquarters Abuja yesterday August 10th with stakeholders from relevant government agencies and road transport unions in attendance.

The Sokoto state Governor, Aminu Tambuwal has revealed that he plans to ban street begging.

The Governor said the act is degrading and it does not align with the tenets of Islam.

The Senate President, Dr. Bukola Saraki, has called for an investigation into the purported recruitment of Boko Haram terrorists in some Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) camps in northeast Nigeria.

The director-general of the Nigerian Textile Manufacturers Association (NTMA), Mr Hamma Kwajaffa, has said that Nigeria spends $4 billion dollars annually importing textiles and readymade clothing.

Speaking during a media parley in Abuja, Kwajaffa stressed that Nigeria has the potential to produce for the local market and also export to the ECOWAS market of 175 million people, as well as to the developed world, noting that the unprecedented harsh environment has no doubt dealt a serious blow to the already fragile industry.

Nigerian mother pays man £1000 to pose as her baby’s dad to avoid deportation



A Nigerian mother, Faust Abolore, who paid a man £1,000 to pose as her newborn baby’s father in order to avoid deportation, has been arraigned before a court in the United Kingdom.

According to UK newspaper, Standard Evening, UK police found out about her fraudulent act through online pictures of the real father cradling his son at a naming ceremony.

Faust Abolore, 29, was said to have hired one Anthony Ezekpo, 44, in a plot to gain British citizenship, using his name on the baby’s birth certificate and a subsequent passport application, Inner London Crown Court heard on Wednesday.

Jonathan Akinyemi out of canoe slalom at #Rio2016


Jonathan Akinyemi failed to make a mark in slalom canoeing on Wednesday at the Rio Olympics after placing 20th in a field of 21.

The UK-based 27-year-old Nigerian could only record a time of 104.59 in his second run in the men’s kayak singles event.

His time was just a few seconds better than the 107.49 he recorded in his first run.

A fresh public opinion poll by NOIPolls on Wednesday revealed that Nigerians have been compelled to adjust the feeding patterns of their families, while others have resigned to fate, resorting to seeking divine intervention through prayers as the country’s economic situation worsens.

The poll conducted in conjunction with Business Day Media revealed that about two-thirds of the country’s 170 million population (66 percent) lamented the hardship they and members of their families were facing since the country’s economic situation worsened over the past three months.

Board of Trustees of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, has failed to broker peace between Senator Ali Modu Sheriff, and the National Caretaker committee chairman of the party.

Ali Modu-Sheriff, who met with the caretaker committee, also insisted that the new convention which he is proposing must be held in Abuja and the governor of Rivers state, Nyesom Wike should not head the convention committee.

54 students denounce cultism in Benue


No fewer than 54 students from various tertiary institutions in Benue State have denounced cultism.

The students left different cult groups during an interactive session between heads of tertiary institutions in the state and the Coordinator of Campus Cult Eradication Foundation, an NGO.

The students made the decision at a meeting co-sponsored by the police.

Boko Haram relocating to Bauchi State – Senator Misau


Senator Isa Hamma Misau (APC, Bauchi Central) has said that the Boko Haram sect members were relocating from their stronghold in Sambisa Forest to a new base in Bauchi.

The retired Police officer, told Daily Trust that the insurgents had started establishing themselves in Burra Forest in Ningi Emirate Council of his constituency.

He said the Burra forest was linked through a corridor to the Falgore Forrest in Kano state and Saminaka in Kaduna State.

A 36-year-old New Mexico woman, Monica Mares, has declared her undying love for her son, Caleb Peterson, stressing that nothing can tear them apart.

Mares, who has eight other children, had given up her son for adoption right after he was born 19 years ago, but on reuniting with each other recently, they were said to have fallen in love, Daily Mail is reporting.

In an interview, Mares said she was willing to give up her other children to fight for her love with Peterson; whom she had when she was only 16.

NEMA compliment USAID for donating $37m to Nigeria


The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has commended the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) for donating 37 million dollars for humanitarian assistance to Nigeria.

The Director-General, Mr Muhammed Sidi, gave the commendation when he received, Mr Jeremy Konyndyk, Director of Foreign Disaster Assistance led USAID team in Abuja on Wednesday.

Super Eagles striker, Ikechukwu Uche, has joined a Spanish second division side, Gimnastic Tarragona. The 32-year-old striker signed a one year deal with the club, africanFootball.com reports.
