Goodluck Jonathan says If Africans can’t send men to moon, they should at least organize free elections


Former President of Nigeria, Goodluck Jonathan, has emphasized the need for free and fair elections in Africa.

Mr. Jonathan, who is leading the African Union Elections Observation Mission to Zambia, said, Monday, on Twitter, “If Africa can’t yet send men to the moon, we should at least organize elections that are free and fair of which the whole world will be proud.”

Some reports have it the man who local media claim has a criminal record, tried to steal from a shop in Porto Alegre but was caught in the act by the owner who chopped off his hand with a machete.

A 17-year-old pregnant girl, simply identified as Temitope Saka, has died after drinking insecticide, (Sniper), in the Igando area of Lagos State.

Saka allegedly blamed her grandma for her suicide mission.

Punch reports that Saka’s boyfriend reported the case at the Igando police division, which led to the arrest of the woman.

An eyewitness explained that Saka, who was the only child of her parents, was taken to her grandmother’s house on Mofoluwasho Close, Alhaji Ede bus stop, Igando after her mother died when she was three years.

COAS hails 7 generals as they bow out of service


The Nigerian Army Engineers at the weekend in Makurdi, Benue State capital rowed out seven(7) generals who have meritoriously served the nation.

Facebook denies hesitation to give data to German investigators


Facebook rejected on Monday claims made by Germany’s state authorities that it was reluctant to co-operate with them on criminal investigations, saying many of the requests it received for user data were incorrectly formulated.

Several regional interior ministers have complained that the social media group is hesitant to respond to requests for data and have called on the Federal Justice Ministry to introduce new laws.

But Facebook said it had provided “round the clock assistance” to the authorities in Bavaria following a spate of violent attacks in Munich, Wuerzburg and Ansbach last month.

Pilgrims to pay more as Saudi increases visa fees


The Cabinet of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia has announced a new visa regime.

The decision, taken on Monday, according to Vice Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques Prince Mohammed bin Naif, was based on a recommendation of the Ministry of Finance and the Ministry of Economy and Planning on increasing non-oil revenue.

Under the new regime, a one-time entry visa fee will be SR2,000, but the state will bear this fee if a visitor is coming to the Kingdom for the first time to perform Haj or Umrah.

The multiple exit/re-entry visa fee will be SR3,000 for six months, SR5,000 for one year and SR8,000 for two years.

A Google account manager has been found dead in 'horrific' circumstances after vanishing while jogging in woodland near her mum's home.

The body of Vanessa Marcotte was reportedly discovered naked and burnt in a wooded area of Massachusetts, US, on Sunday night.

Detectives are now investigating the possibility that the 27-year-old was sexually assaulted before being set on fire and killed at the site.

A factional chairman of the All Progressives Congress in Kano State, Hussaini Mairiga, on Monday, came down hard on President Muhammadu Buhari, describing the president as a total failure.

Mr. Mairiga, who spoke with journalists in Kano, said: “from the looks of things President Buhari has betrayed the confidence of the Nigerian masses who voted for him massively into power.”

The president, who was elected on the platform of the APC, assumed office on May 29, 2015.

The factional chairman said it was not an exaggeration that members of many families in the country go to bed without at least one square meal while others had fled their homes because they could no longer provide the basic needs of life for their loved ones.

Ethiopia | Security Forces shot and killed dozens of Protesters


Ethiopian security forces shot dead several dozen people in weekend protests across the country as frustration with the government grows, an opposition leader and Amnesty International said Monday, while hundreds staged a rare demonstration in the capital after calls via social media.

The government again blocked the internet over the weekend, alleging that “anti-peace elements” based abroad and online activists were to blame for the violence.

In a statement, Amnesty International said at least 67 people were killed in the Oromia region alone when security forces fired on protesters, and that another at least 30 were shot and killed in the northern city of Bahir Dar. The rights group cited “credible sources” and said hundreds of people were detained.

A statement released by EFCC earlier on Monday claimed that Abusidiq was arrested and questioned on offences that allegedly contravene the Cyber Crime Act.
