Philippines | Dozens surrender in Manila after drug trade allegations


Dozens of Philippine government and police officials turned themselves in on Monday, a day after President Rodrigo Duterte linked them to the drug trade, stepping up a war on narcotics that has killed hundreds since he took office in June.

More than 400 suspected drug dealers have been killed by police across the Philippines since Duterte took over, officials say. Broadcaster ABS-CNN put the number closer to 800, as the figure includes executions by anonymous vigilantes.

Dangote Industries Limited has announced the commencement of the construction of concrete roads in various states across the country, particularly in Lagos, Bauchi, Kogi, Kaduna and Ogun states.
“We are very happy at the moment. We can categorically state that we are in more than five states across the country already constructing roads. The reception has been wonderful. State governments are beginning to see the need to embrace concrete roads and we are very happy at the way things are currently going,” the company said.

The Chairman, Kwara State Local Government Pensioners Association, Mr. lsiaka Akanbi, on Saturday, said no fewer than 1,005 of its members had died since April 2015, as a result of unpaid pension allowances.

Akanbi, in an interview with our correspondent in Ilorin, the state capital, said the victims, who cut across the 16 local government councils of the state, died as a result of their inability to get adequate healthcare attention.

Niger Republic Troops Withdraws From Damasak


Soldiers from the Niger Republic have withdrawn from Damasak, a boundary town in northern Borno State, after recapturing the town from the dreaded Boko Haram sect.

The town is considered one of the strongholds of the terrorist group by the Multi-National Joint Task Force (MNJTF).
