#Rio2016: Nigeria and Portugal Progress, Brazil Held Again


Nigeria and Portugal became the first teams to qualify for the Olympic men's football tournament quarter-finals, while hosts Brazil were held again. 

The 2008 runners-up Nigeria backed up their thrilling 5-4 win over Japan with a 1-0 victory against Group B opponents Sweden, courtesy of Sadiq Umar's first-half goal.

Andy and Jamie Murray are out of the men’s doubles, while top seed Novak Djokovic lost in the singles, in some of the matches played Sunday at the Rio Olympics.

The Britons seeded second, lost 7-6 (8-6) 7-6 (16-14) to Brazilian pair Thomaz Bellucci and Andre Sa in front of a partisan home crowd.

Earlier, defending champion Andy Murray won his opening Olympic singles match by beating Serbia’s Viktor Troicki.

Dangote Industries Limited commences construction of concrete roads in states


Dangote Industries Limited has announced the commencement of the construction of concrete roads in various states across the country, particularly in Lagos, Bauchi, Kogi, Kaduna and Ogun states.
“We are very happy at the moment. We can categorically state that we are in more than five states across the country already constructing roads. The reception has been wonderful. State governments are beginning to see the need to embrace concrete roads and we are very happy at the way things are currently going,” the company said.

The immediate past President, Goodluck Jonathan, has dismissed reports that he was one of those funding rampaging militant group, Niger Delta Avengers.

Recall that a splinter group of Avengers, Reformed Niger Delta Avengers, RNDA, had issued a statement claiming that Jonathan was the grand patron of the rampaging group that has claimed responsibility for several attacks on oil installations in the oil-rich region.

Kidnappers reveals they receive N15m to release Iba Monarch


Kidnappers of the Oniba of Iba, Oba Goriola Oseni who regained his freedom on Saturday collected N15.1 million as ransom before releasing the monarch.

One of the arrested kidnappers, Isaiah Ododomu disclosed this on Sunday when he was paraded by the Police.

Kwara State | 1,005 Pensioners Die Over Unpaid Salaries


The Chairman, Kwara State Local Government Pensioners Association, Mr. lsiaka Akanbi, on Saturday, said no fewer than 1,005 of its members had died since April 2015, as a result of unpaid pension allowances.

Akanbi, in an interview with our correspondent in Ilorin, the state capital, said the victims, who cut across the 16 local government councils of the state, died as a result of their inability to get adequate healthcare attention.

Niger Republic Troops Withdraws From Damasak


Soldiers from the Niger Republic have withdrawn from Damasak, a boundary town in northern Borno State, after recapturing the town from the dreaded Boko Haram sect.

The town is considered one of the strongholds of the terrorist group by the Multi-National Joint Task Force (MNJTF).

Deputy Senate President, Ekweremadu to Deliver U.S. Constitution Day Lecture


The Deputy President of the Senate, Senator Ike Ekweremadu, will deliver the 2016 edition of the United States of America (USA) Constitution Day Lecture entitled the “Influence of the U.S Constitution on African Democracies”.

This was announced by the U.S Law Library of Congress, the organisers of the annual event, at the weekend.

By this, Ekweremadu, who is both the Deputy President of Nigerian Senate and Chairman of the Senate Committee on the Review of the 1999 Constitution for a record third term, will be the first non-U.S citizen to deliver the august lecture commemorating the ratification of the world’s oldest written constitution on September 17, 1787.

Say What | Man left his 5-year-old son during police chase because he couldnt keep up


A Dania Beach man, 27 year old Jerry McCabe who ran away from police during an attempted traffic stop fled from his car and took off running with his 5-year-old son. According to police he kept urging his son to run faster but when they got to a barrier, he ditched his son and jumped over a barbed wire because his son couldn’t keep up.

According to a Pembroke Pines police arrest report, McCabe was driving a Dodge Charger without a valid license when an officer tried to stop him but McCabe refused to stop and led the officer on a car chase, weaving in and out of traffic.
