The Fajuyi Spirit By Femi Fani-kayode


Fifty years ago today, on July 29th, 1966, a man by the name of Major General Francis Adekunle Fajuyi gave his life in defence of our country and the then Head of State, General Johnson Thomas Aguiyi-Ironsi.

His killers were a group of northern army officers who participated in the so-called northern “revenge coup” of July 29th, 1966. No less than 300 Igbo army officers were slaughtered that night together with a handful of Yoruba soldiers, including Fajuyi.

Florida Records First Cases of Zika Virus


Florida‘s Department of Health announced Friday that four people infected with the Zika virus probably caught it from local mosquitoes.

One woman and three men were infected with the Zika virus in Miami-Dade and Broward counties.

Florida’s Department of Health believes that the transmissions of the Zika virus are occurring in one small area in Miami-Dade County. This is the only area where the department is testing for local transmissions of Zika.

Say What! Sweden’s Government believe His Citizens Are Having Less Sex


Swedish tabloids have reported that Swedes are having less sex than before, and now the government wants to investigate if this is true.

The Public Health Agency will carry out a study on Swedish sex habits, which is set to be completed in 2019. It has been 20 years since the last in-depth study of sex habits in Sweden, the Associated Press reports.

US Commander debunks claims of been link to Turkey’s military coup


The commander of US forces in the Middle East denied Friday that he had any link to the military coup attempt in Turkey following accusations by the country’s President Recep Tayyip Erdogan. 
“Any reporting that I had anything to do with the recent unsuccessful coup attempt in Turkey is unfortunate and completely inaccurate,” General Joseph Votel, commander of US Central Command, said in a statement. 

12-Year-Old Boy Allegedly Smothered 4-Month-Old to Stop Him from Crying


A 12-year-old Florida boy is facing charges after police say he smothered to death his 4-month-old nephew to stop him from crying.

Police in West Palm Beach say officers and paramedics answered the call last Dec. 2 for the unresponsive boy who later was pronounced dead at St. Mary's Medical Center. 

Days afterward, the 12-year-old allegedly approached an officer at his school and wrote on a piece of paper, "I killed my nephew," reports CBS12.com. 

Kano State | Government releases N789 million for Hajj 2016


The Kano State government has released N789.5 million for the state Pilgrims Welfare Board for the successful conduct of 2016 Hajj operations.

Briefing journalists on the outcome of State Executive Council meeting held at Kano Government House on Wednesday, the state Commissioner of Information, Youth and Culture, Muhammad Garba, said the amount is meant for operational expenditure and other related logistics.

The commissioner remarked that as a result of the national austerity measures and devaluation of the naira, the state government had reduced its Hajj operation staff from 80 to 40 while supporting staff were scaled down from 175 to 99 personnel.

In Nasarawa | Four NLC Workers allegedly Shot by Police


Four workers were allegedly shot in Nasarawa state by police on Friday as the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) began talks with the State Government over the labour crisis rocking the state.

The workers were said to have been shot by a policeman at the gate of the Government House where they had gone to await the outcome of the NLC meeting with Gov. Umaru Al-Makura

NLC President Ayuba Wabba told newsmen at the Police Clinic in Lafia that one of the workers had died, while three others, including a lady, were being treated for gunshot wounds.

The Imo State governor said this, today while briefing journalists on the state of affairs in Imo. He said the reduction of work days would enable workers to attend to other activities that would generate money to supplement their monthly salaries to take care of their families.
His words: “I encourage Imo workers to find additional things to do to support their families because of the economic situation we are facing in Nigeria. We are considering to reduce the working days from five to three in Imo, so that workers will use the rest of the days to work and support their families."

Dr Chikwe Adreas Ihekweazu is Head of the National Centre for Disease Control; Dr Sani H. Aliyu – Head of National Agency for the Control of AIDS; Professor Echezona Ezeanolue – Head of National Primary Healthcare Development Agency; and Professor Usman Yusuf – Head of National Health Insurance Scheme.

The nominees, Ibrahim Isa from Niger state and Vivian Nwunaku Okeke from Anambra state mixed up the National Anthem and pledge when the chairman of the senate committee on Foreign Affairs, Monsurat Sunmonu asked them to recite it and a member of the committee, Senator James Manager, saved them from the embarrassing moment by correcting them immediately.

Sokoto Government uncovers 13,000 ghost workers in LGAs


Sokoto State Government said it has discovered no fewer than 12,915 ghost workers whose names were added to the payroll of the 23 Local Governments Areas of the state.

The State Commissioner for Local Governments and Community Development, Alhaji Mannir Dan-Iya, disclosed this at a media briefing in Sokoto.

This happened in Ashkamish district of Takhar province, Afghanistan. A woman who was six months pregnant lost her unborn baby after her husband, assisted by his mother and sister, nearly beat her to death and cut part of her genitals.

What warranted the shocking attack has not been revealed but the victim, who is in her 20s, said her husband launched an unprovoked attack on her with a wooden stick, cut her hair with a pair of scissors and shaved parts of her head. This was in the presence of his mother and her sister-in-law, who also helped him tie her up with a rope and beat her senseless.
