Oyo State Governor promises distribution of food items to residents


The Oyo state governor, Abiola Ajimobi has promised that his administration will provide food items every quarter of the year to help people of the state manage the biting economic hardship in the country.

The governor made the pledge yesterday in Ibadan, the state capital while speaking at the third phase of the “Ajumose Food Bank’’ initiative.

Ajimobi pointed out that the move was targeted at reducing hunger and starvation among people of the state.

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has declared Mr Ben Uwajumogu of the All Progressives Congress (APC) winner of Imo North Senatorial District rerun election held on July 28.

Uwajumogu scored 56,076 votes to defeat Mr Athan Achonu of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) who scored 43, 815 votes. Prof. Arinze Agbogu, the INEC Returning Officer for Imo North Senatorial District, who announced the result in the early hours of Friday, said the outcome was a summation of scores of July 23 and that of July 28 exercise.

UNICEF halt aid deliveries due to attack on convoy in Borno


The United Nations, UN, said yesterday that aid deliveries to Internally Displaced Persons, IDPs camps in Borno State will temporarily be put on hold due to an attack on humanitarian convoy.

Reuters quoted UNICEF as saying in a statement that unidentified gunmen attacked the convoy yesterday as it returned to Maiduguri after delivering aid in Bama.

Staff of UNICEF, an International Organisation for Migration contractor, was injured in the process.

A young woman seeking love online was 'beheaded' after going on a first date with a stranger. Kristina Medvedeva, who used dating websites, was found dead beside a lake on the outskirts of Ekaterinburg in Russia.

The 22-year-old's body was discovered in a mutilated state, with her head almost entirely severed, police said.

The macabre find was made three days after Kristina was last seen and last online. The shop assistant, who lived in the city, had moved from her provincial hometown Talitsa in search of love and a new life.

IAAF disqualifies Nigeria's 4×400m Women Relay Team From Rio Olympics


The International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) have thrown Nigeria's 4x400m women's relay team out of next month's Olympic Games in Brazil.

Nigeria's disqualification from the event followed Tosin Adeloye's positive drugs test at the Confederation of African Athletics (CAA) Super Grand Prix/Warri Relays in Warri, Delta State on July 24, 2015.

Adeloye was a member of the Nigerian quartet that finished fourth in Beijing August last year at the IAAF World Championships. In fact she ran the third leg in the semi-finals where the team ran 3:23.27 seconds, the second fastest time in Nigeria's all-time record.

A Romanian man is being hunted in Spain after he fled the UK with a teenage girl.

Elena Ciochina, 15, was last seen at 7pm on Saturday when she left her home in Newham, east London.Detectives believe she is with 27-year-old Ionut Gheorghe, who was spotted on CCTV taking £250 from a cash machine in Enfield, north London, earlier that afternoon.

A suspected child abductor, Ola Ibikunle, has been detained by the police after he was caught with a four-year-old girl in the Oyero area of Ijoko, Ogun State.

It was learnt that Ibikunle, a bricklayer, had held his victim, Eniola, by the neck and was about to strangle her in an uncompleted building when he was caught by passersby.

The suspect, who confessed to have stolen a three-year-old boy and sold him for N1,500, was later handed over to operatives of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad of the Agbado Police Division.

31-year-old Man Rapes Fellow Church Member During Surprise Birthday Party


The Lagos State Police Command has arrested a 31-year-old man, identified only as Damilola, for allegedly raping a 25-year-old woman on Omole Estate, in the Ojodu area of the state.

It was gathered that the victim and Damilola are members of a parish of the Redeemed Christian Church of God, and that the woman had invited the suspect to her birthday party on Tuesday, July 19.

According to reports, the victim was allegedly told by the suspect five days after the birthday party that he had a surprise gift for her.

A man, identified as Jacob Nwachukwu from Abala in Obingwa area of Abia State, has cut off his wife’s left hand over allegation of infidelity.

The wife, Mrs. Nwadiokeonu Nwachukwu, is now at a hospital in Aba, while her severed hand had been taken to her husband’s village at Abala for burial. The sad incident happened on Monday, at Ogbor Hill, Aba, where the woman had lived for years, while the husband stayed in the village.

A female co-tenant of Mrs Nwachukwu, who craved anonymity, revealed what happened:
She told Vanguard that the couple had lived in the city for years before the husband lost his job and had to relocate to the village, leaving his wife, a trader, in the city.

Jonathan Akinyemi is first the Nigerian athlete to arrive in Rio, Brazil


Nigerian canoeist, Jonathan Akinyemi, has arrived in Rio, Brazil, ahead of the 2016 Summer Olympic Games, which begins in the Brazilian City of Rio on August 5.

Akinyemi, who will represent Nigeria‎ at the Olympics for the second successive time in the canoe/slalom kayak event, arrived in Brazil on Tuesday, ahead of the other members of Team Nigeria, and was received at the Games Village by officials of Team Nigeria.

Lagos State | Police holds emergency meeting over killings, insecurity


The Lagos State Police Commissioner, Fatai Owoseni, yesterday summoned all heads of operational units in the state following unabated kidnappings and killings in the past few weeks.

Dwindling Economy | Airlines seek 45 per cent increase in fares


The current spike in the exchange rate of the dollar to the naira may be taking its toll on the country’s foreign-exchange-dependent aviation sector as airline operators seek to increase their fares by 45 per cent.

The dollar exchange rate, which currently stands at N350, according to the airline operators, has further pushed the cost of running the business beyond them.

Some operators said that their plight was not helped by the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) disapproval of a new airfare regime that should have officially gone up by 45 percent, to keep pace with the dollar rate.

Arsenal FC defeat MLS Allstars (2-1) but not without Didier Drogba Scoring (Watch Full Highlights)
