Kano: Learner driver squash woman to death


The Word of Faith Christian Centre, Kano, was thrown into mourning on Friday when a learner driver, Gloria Okocha, accidentally crushed another member of the church, Remi Nwokolor, to death.

The tragedy took place at Nomansland, Sabon Gari, Kano. Our correspondent gathered that Okocha was trying to drive out of the church premises when she suddenly hit the victim before colliding against the wall of the church.

A notorious rapist known as Badoo was yesterday lynched to death by an angry mob after he was caught raping a little girl at Ota, Owode Ibeshe Ikorodu. He was stripped unclad and beaten to death before his body was burnt.

Sultan to Muslims: Fight Only When You’re Stopped From Performing Your Religious Obligations


The Sultan of Sokoto and President-General of the Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs, NSCIA, Alhaji Sa’ad Abubakar III, has warned Muslims in the country against taking laws into their hands.

This is just as he disclosed that the only time Muslims should “fight”, is when their religious rights are being trampled upon.

Speaking in Ilorin, Kwara State, at the opening of a National Conference of Islamic preachers under the umbrella of Da’wah Co-ordination Council of Nigeria (DCCN) at the weekend, Sultan Abubakar also warned Muslim clerics against hate sermons and urged them to “not force anybody to join Islam”.

Sokoto State: Flood destroys about 585 Homes


About 585 houses were destroyed in a late night flood in seven towns of Wurno Local Government of Area of Sokoto State.

Alhaji Abdulkadir Jelani, the Chairman of the local government council, disclosed this in Wurno town, while addressing newsmen on Saturday. As he added that the incident occurred due to heavy rainfall.
“The problem was aggravated by the blockage of some drainage in the affected town and their environs.”

An 80-year-old man, Barrister Pius Enebeli, has set a new career goal for the aged by graduating from the law school. Enebeli revealed in an interview with Daily Trust, that he plans to take things up a notch by going into active advocacy. He believes God has a purpose for him having lived long enough to finish his law degree and complete the compulsory one year study at the law school.

Pandemonium as El-Rufai issues demolition notices to 3,500 houses, 40 churches, 16 schools


A large crowd of  residents of Gbagyi Villa – a suburb of Kaduna metropolis – on March 17, trooped out, carrying placards in protest against demolition notices issued to them by Kaduna State Urban Planning Development Authority, KASUPDA.    The residents said they had been living in the community for decades and had acquired the necessary titles to the lands and, as such, were  jolted by the intention of Kaduna State government to eject them.

Mr. Chris Obodum, Chairman, Gbagyi Community, later told journalists that the community boasted of about 3,500 buildings, 40 churches, 16 schools and 35,000 residents. He narrated: ‘The story of Gbagyi Villa is easy to understand. For hundreds of years, the area has been inhabited by the Gbagyi people. However, sometime in 2010, a suit was instituted against some members of the local community by Kaduna Polytechnic.

James Ibori’s lawyer, Gohil gets £20,000 compensation from Court


A British court has ordered that Bhadresh Gohil, lawyer to the convicted former governor of Delta state, James Ibori, be paid £20,000 by the Crown Prosecution Service for unlawfully detaining Gohil and depriving him of his rights.

According to the BBC, the prosecution agreed to pay the compensation for detaining Gohil for 33 days between November 20 and December 22, 2015.

Olonisakin’s Cousin Killed in Boko Haram’s Raid on Nigerian Troops


A cousin of Gabriel Olonisakin, the chief of defence staff, was one of the soldiers killed in a Boko Haram attack on the army in Kangarwa, Borno state, on July 12, it has been revealed.

Leo Irabor, a major-general and theatre commander of the Operation Lafuya Dole, made the disclosure on Friday in Maiduguri while briefing the media on activities of Operation LAFIYA DOLE.

Author of the plan to overthrow President Buhari Arrested


The Department of State Services (DSS) has arrested one Jones Abari, aka Gen. Akotebe Darikoro, for the alleged mastermind of a hoaxed plan to overthrow President Muhammad Buhari by the military.

 A statement issued by an official of the service, Mr Tony Opuiyo in Abuja on Saturday said Abari was arrested in Yenagoa on July 21. Opuiyo described the suspect as the leader of the Joint Revolutionary Council of the Joint Niger Delta Liberation Force ( JNDLF). He said that Abari had confessed to other criminal activities which included a threat to launch missile attacks on selected targets in Abuja and Aso Rock. Others include writing threat messages to the management of the Nigeria Agip Oil Company (NAOC) and the Shell Petroleum Development Company (SPDC) demanding for N500 million and N250 million respectively.

Rio 2016: FBI tip Brazil over arrest of suspected militants


The U.S. Federal Bureau of Investigation gave Brazil the tip that led to arrests this week of 11 suspected militants who had discussed a possible attack on the upcoming Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, according to a Brazilian prosecutor.

In comments to several Brazilian newspapers published Saturday, Rafael Brum Miron, the federal prosecutor handling the case in the southern state of Parana, said the FBI had provided a brief report in which it identified at least six people it suspected as potential militants.

Munich Shooter has no relationship with Islamist - Police


The German- Iranian shooter who opened fire at a mall on Friday in Munich, has been identified as  18-year-old Ali David Sonboly. Ali Sonboly  shot dead nine people and injured at least 21 others. He was later found dead after fleeing the scene.

U-20 AFCON: Flying Eagles crash out after Sudan defeat


Nigeria’s U-20 team will not be at next year’s U-20 AFCON, after they were beaten 4-3 at home by 10-man Sudan, thus losing the tie on away goals rule.

Boko Haram Ambush: Missing soldiers, officers found in stable condition


The Nigerian Army has announced that some officers and soldiers who went missing during an ambush by Boko Haram have been found.

The theatre Commander of Operation Lafiya Dole, Major General Lucky Irabor, had earlier confirmed that 16 men were missing.

According to Sahara Reporters, the Army Public Relations Director, Colonel Sani Kukasheka Usman issued a statement saying “Please recall that some of our troops were missing in action after an ambush at Guro Gongon on 20th July 2016.

Air Force Plane Goes Missing With 29 People On Board


India on Friday mounted a massive search and rescue operation for an Indian Air Force plane that went missing with 29 people on board over the Bay of Bengal, Punch reports.

With concern mounting hours after its disappearance, five surveillance aircraft and 13 navy and coastguard ships launched the search for the aircraft, which vanished shortly after take-off from the southern city of Chennai.
