How a Policemen collected N10,000, beat up a 28 year old man to a pulp


A 28-year-old man, Ndifreke Ibuotenang, has accused the police in Akwa Ibom State of alleged brutality and theft.

The artisan claimed he was brutalized by a group of policemen attached to Mkpat Enin Police Division in the state.

According to him, the incident happened at about 9pm on Thursday when he was returning from where he went to drink palm wine.

MTN Group Issues Profit Warning over Nigeria Fine, Devaluation


MTN Group Limited fell in Johannesburg trading as the Africa’s largest mobile-phone company said it expects to report a first-half loss after agreeing to pay a record fine in Nigeria.

The shares dropped 2.5 percent to 138.13 rands by 11:25a.m., after earlier slumping as much as 3.8 percent, the most in three weeks on a closing basis.

The N330 billion ($1.18 billion) settlement in Nigeria, announced in June, will reduce earnings per share for the six months through June by 4.74 rands, while foreign-exchange losses, joint ventures and adjustments for inflation in Iran will further hurt results, MTN said in a statement yesterday.

Yesterday troops of 7 Division Strike Group Team B (7 DSGB), attached to 21 Brigade, along with 4 Civilian JTF, carried out clearance operation of suspected remnants of Boko Haram terrorists in Warpaya, Zenteleye, Mubarka, Jadawa and Yerwa villages.

During the operations, they encountered and engaged elements of Boko Haram terrorists in Jadawa and Yerwa in which they killed 7 terrorists. Unfortunately 4 soldiers were wounded in action.

The troops also recovered one Fabrique Nationale (FN) rifle with registration number ANT 015 (B/B No 0058), 2 motorcycles and 2 mobile phones. As the operations continued, the team also intercepted some of the Boko Haram terrorists with 75 rustled cows and 25 stolen sheep.

While returning to base, the team was ambushed by suspected elements of Boko Haram terrorists. But the troops rose to the occasion and successfully cleared the ambush. They also encountered serious hardship because of bugging down of vehicles occasioned by marshy terrain.

Mum charged with murder for drowning her 6-week old son


A North Carolina woman, 24-year-old new mum, Jameisha Alexander was seen holding her 6-week old son, King, near a pond Saturday night by someone who immediately called security. But by the time officers arrived, Alexander was gone and the baby was in the water, according to her arrest warrant.
Paramedics tried CPR to revive the newborn baby but the boy died a short time later.

Alexander was taken into custody two hours later after she was found involved in a car wreck about 20 miles away.

She was arrested and jailed on a murder charge pending a court hearing Tuesday.

Nigerian Navy apprehends Niger Delta Avengers major Logistics Supplier


The Nigerian Navy said it had arrested a suspected member of the Niger Delta Avengers. This is contained in a statement signed by its Director of Information, Commodore Christian Ezekobe, and made available to newsmen in Abuja.

According to Ezekobe, the suspect who was picked up on July 11 at about 11am, is believed to be a major logistics supplier to the group which had claimed responsibility for attacks on NNPC and Chevron pipelines in the region.

Inspector General of Police vow to crush criminals nationwide


The Inspector-General of Police, Acting IG Ibrahim Idris, in continuation of his visit to security agencies, yesterday paid a working visit to the Director General, Department of State Services, Abuja.

Speaking in the office of the Director General, IGP Ibrahim Idris said the aim of the visit was to seek the cooperation and collaboration of the Directorate of State Services in tackling the security challenges facing the country.

Kenyan: Police apprehends woman who destroyed husband's car after she found him with his lover


Kenyan police today, July 19, arrested a woman who allegedly destroyed her estranged husband's car after finding him with another woman in Migori town.

Joyce Kandie had gone to Peter Murunga's house at Aroso estate to seek his help as their baby was sick. She claimed that he absconded his responsibilities in November 2015 when he started living with the other woman identified as Susan Roki.

Oporoza Community chairman denied receiving Minister of Sports in their Community


Minister of Youths and Sports, Solomon Dalung on July 15 announced that he visited and held talks with members of Niger Delta Avengers. He claimed to have taken a two-hour journey on the sea to Oporoza in Gbaramatu kingdom, Warri South-West LGA, Delta state, where he met with the leadership of the NDA.

The Avengers however denied meeting with him, claiming he met with fraudsters instead. Oporoza community has also now denied being aware of such a visit. In a statement released today, Chairman of the community, Mr. Johnbull Demebi said no one was aware of any meeting and oblivious of his supposed visit.

25 years old University student in Kaduna builds helicopter from scraps


25-year-old University student from Kaduna, Mubarak Abdullahi supposedly built a helicopter at home that can allegedly fly up to seven feet. The people who shared the info on Facebook claim he used scrap aluminum and parts from a Honda Civic, an old Toyota and from the remains of a crashed Boeing 747 to build it.

News Anchor Didi Akinyelure wins BBC World News Komla Dumor Award


Nigerian journalist Didi Akinyelure has won the second BBC World News Komla Dumor Award.

Akinyelure, a business news anchor with CNBC Africa, will start a three-month placement at BBC in London in September as part of her prize. She has been with CNBC Africa since 2013.

The award, established in honour of Komla Dumor, a presenter for BBC World News, who died aged 41 in 2014, seeks to "celebrate African journalism and reward exceptional talent," BBC says.

United Nations says about 250K children in Borno state suffer from severe malnutrition


According to a new report by the United Nation, about 250 thousand children in Borno state are suffering from severe malnutrition and if they do not receive immediate treatment, tens of thousands of the children may die soon. The report which was released today July 19th, states that out of the 244,000 children suffering from severe acute malnutrition in Borno this year, an estimated 49,000 children – almost 1 in 5 – will die if they are not reached with treatment.

Nuhu Ribadu returns to APC, Atiku fumes

EFCC detains Abia REC over alleged N20 million bribe in 2015 Election


The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) is detaining Abia State Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) Sylvester Ezeani for alleged N20 million scam.

Ezeani was the REC in Cross River State during the March 28, 2015, Presidential and National Assembly Elections.

Also, a member of the House of Representatives (Oron Constituency, Akwa Ibom State), Nse Bassey Ekpenyong, has been arrested for his alleged involvement in a certificate forgery scam.

Also yesterday, Dr. Doyin Okupe, a former Senior Special Assistant to ex-President Goodluck Jonathan on Media and Publicity, was grilled again for allegedly collecting N15million from Destra Nigeria Limited, a company owned by a former National Publicity Secretary of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Chief Olisa Metuh.

Abia Governorship Tussle: Ikpeazu insists he won’t relinquish power to Ogah


As the Abia political crisis lingers with various interest groups coming to Umuahia Government House for solidarity with Governor Ikpeazu, the embattled governor of Abia State, Dr. Okezie Ikpeazu yesterday, vowed that he could not afford to relinquish his seat to Dr. Uche Ogah, saying that the mandate was freely given to him by God and Abia people.

The Governor also claimed that the mandate given to him by Abia voters has spiritual connotation which he could not afford to abandon. Ikpeazu, who spoke while addressing the people of Abia North who were on a solidarity visit to him at the Government House, Umuahia, disclosed that he had previously visited Uche Ogah three times to solicit his support and urged him to drop his ambition but to no avail.

Edo State: Spain-based Nigerian seeks justice over acid attack


A 37-year-old Spain-based acid attack victim, Mabel Mark, has appealed to Edo State Police Command to arrest and prosecute the suspects involved in the incident in the interest of justice. The mother of one, who hails from Ohordua in Esan South-East Local Government Area of Edo State, was attacked by unknown persons at a salon last October at Upper Sakponba Road, Benin, Edo State.

It was learned that her trouble started after she met a native doctor at Upper Sakponba Road, identified as Okoh-Oboh.

Gov. Amosun says Nigerian governors cannot pay salaries because they fail to think outside the box


Governor Ibikunle Amosun of Ogun State, yesterday said the reason why some governors could not pay salaries and fund their states well was because they have failed to think outside the box.

Amosun, who spoke during a meeting with Organised Private Sector at the Government House, Abeokuta, said; ‘’The era of free money from Abuja had gone.’’

He added that the development had made governors become endangered species among their people. While reacting to the allegation of mismanagement of bailout by governors, Amosun said it was erroneous to accuse governors of mismanagement of the bailout funds released to their respective states by the Federal Government.

Donald Trump gets 6,000 tea bags from an India Firm for Soul Cleansing


An Indian company Thursday said it had sent 6,000 green tea bags to White House hopeful Donald Trump, believing they would help him to become “smarter” and cleanse his soul. The unusual gift — which equals four years supply if drunk four times a day — was from Kolkata-based Te-a-Me Teas, its executive director Sumit Shah told AFP.

Shah also said the company had set up a website — www.teafortrump.com — where people could tweet a message to Trump and urge him to drink the tea daily. “We firmly believe green tea can do a lot of good to people.
