In Lagos: SS2 student stabbed to death during a football match (PHOTO)


A Senior Secondary School 2 student, Michael Tanko pictured above, was stabbed to death during a friendly football match between youths in Okota, Lagos state over the weekend. Tanko was playing the match with his mates when he got into a disagreement with one Kayode Babayanju who stabbed him in the hollow of his left elbow.

Buratai says Army carrying out forensic audit of all its formations, operations and units


Chief of Army Staff, Lt.-Gen. Tukur Buratai, yesterday disclosed that the Nigerian Army is presently carrying out Forensic auditing of all its formations, units and operations in the Northeast. Buratai said this when Ugochukwu Osuagwu, Principal Partner of St Francis Xavier Solicitors paid him visit in Abuja.

He said the Army, under his command, has zero tolerance for corruption and that the wastages of the past were being corrected in line with the policy of the Buhari-led administration.

Obafemi Martins visits Demba Ba in hospital after horrible injury


Obafemi Martins has visited and sent his best wishes to Senegalese footballer Demba Ba after the striker suffered a horrendous leg break on Sunday. Ba collapsed in agony in the 63rd minute following a challenge from Shanghai SIPG's Sun Xiang during a Chinese Super League match in Shangai.

The striker was stretchered off the pitch after a prolonged period of treatment in which the striker received oxygen.

Bukola Saraki says he remain loyal to APC


Senate President, Bukola Saraki on Monday restated his loyalty to the governing All Progressives Congress (APC). Saraki also reiterated his belief that the President Buhari's government will redeem its electoral promises made during the 2015 general elections.

The Senate President spoke at the 10th Abuja Housing Show where top government officials and prominent stakeholders in the housing sector brainstormed on the theme: “Expanding Access To Affordable Housing In Africa.”

NFF secure deal with company to pay new Eagles Coach


President of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), Amaju Pinnick, has revealed that they have reached an agreement with a company, to pay the new Super Eagles coach.

Paul Le Guen has been named the new Technical Adviser of the Super Eagles, by the Technical and Development Committee of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) on Monday.

The 52-year-old Frenchman will be assisted by Salisu Yusuf, who has been appointed as Chief Coach.

Wike raises alarm over posting of compromised Police Officers to Rivers State


Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Wike has expressed shock over what he called a plot to reverse the gains made by the state in the promotion of security of lives and property, through the re-posting of compromised police officers back to the state.

The governor stated that he had officially informed the new Inspector-General of Police of the several postings of officers used by politicians to compromise Rivers State Security.

Addressing medical practitioners at the Government House, Port Harcourt on Monday, Governor Wike stated that should the Inspector-General of Police fail to act, he will be compelled to make a state broadcast, name the said officers and the ignominious roles they played in compromising the security of the state.

Governors have degraded State Universities – ASUU


President of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Prof. Biodun Ogunyemi, has accused state governments of neglecting universities established by their predecessors.

He told newsmen on Monday in Abuja that many states had failed to fully implement the 2009 agreement in which they participated.
“State governments have been neglecting universities that they established and some state governors are going ahead to establish new ones while those brought to life by their predecessors in office are neglected to rot and die,” Ogunyemi said.

Aviation Fuel Scarcity: Passengers stranded at Airports across Nigeria


As the ongoing scarcity of aviation fuel, otherwise known as called Jet-A1 continues to bite harder, passengers were stranded at airports across the country on Monday.

It was gathered that the scarcity of the product had resulted in the delay or outright cancellation of some of their flights across the country.

Checks at the domestic terminals of the Murtala Muhammed Airport in Lagos show that many airlines were forced to either cancel or reschedule most of their flights due to the scarcity of aviation fuel, thus, leaving many intending travelers stranded.

A member of the National Youth Service Corps, Bonaventure Okeke, has been arraigned in a Gudu Upper Area Court, Abuja for allegedly committing adultery.

Okeke of Jahi 2 Market area of Abuja, was on Monday docked on a one-count charge of committing adultery with one Anozie Chinenye.

The plaintiff, Emeka Anozie of Hayingada Saminaka, Kaduna State, made a direct criminal complaint to the court against the defendant on March 24, through his counsel, Obioma Achilefu.

AU troops mistakenly kill 14 civilians in Somalia


African Union troops fighting al-Shabaab Islamists in Somalia have killed 14 civilians whom they mistook for militants.

The officials and witnesses said on Monday in Mogadishu, that the Ethiopian troops had been told that al-Shabaab militants had entered the southern village of Wardinle to attack their nearby base.

They said the troops reportedly attacked the village with gunfire, tanks and heavy shelling late Sunday.

Afghan Teenager Attack 22 People On A Train In Germany


17 years old Afghan teen identified as a refugee attacked 22 people in a train with an axe on Monday night, seriously injuring 3 people while the other 19 escaped with minor injuries.

The teen whose name has not yet been released is a suspected Islamic extremist as it was reported he shouted ‘Allahu Akbar’ (God is the greatest) as he hacked and slashed at people.

CNN reports that the perpetrator, who was armed with a knife and an axe, attacked the train as it was moving between stations.

Paul Le Guen is Super Eagles' Technical Adviser, Salisu Yusuf as Chief Coach - NFF


The Technical and Development Committee of the Nigeria Football Federation on Monday named Frenchman Paul Le Guen, 52, as the new Technical Adviser of the Senior National Team, Super Eagles. He will be assisted by Nigerian Salisu Yusuf, who takes the role of Chief Coach.

After the meeting at the NFF secretariat, Spokesman of the Committee Paul Bassey, also said that Enugu Rangers gaffer Imama Amapakabo and former Super Eagles’ goalkeeper/skipper Alloy Agu, who served as assistant coach and goalkeeper trainer for the games against Mali and Luxembourg in May, retain their places in the technical crew.

Pregnant woman refuse breast cancer treatment to save her unborn baby


A pregnant woman diagnosed with stage-three breast cancer accepted death so that her baby could live. Nguyen Thi Thu Hien from Duc Pho District in Quang Ngai Province turned down chemotherapy which would have meant giving up her unborn baby.

Hien and her husband got married Nguyen Tan Thanh 18 years ago. The young couple later left their hometown in search of treatment for their infertility in the central coastal city of Quy Nhon.

Hien and Thanh gave up after multiple unsuccessful in vitro fertilization attempts they could barely afford. Hien was admitted to hospital after she slipped while delivering noodles to diners where she worked. Doctors diagnosed her with stage-three breast cancer and announced her pregnancy during that same hospital admission.

Gov Aregbesola says Country's current economic situation worse than that of Biafra civil war


Osun State Governor, Rauf Aregbesola has decried Nigeria’s current economic situation, saying the hardship now is worse than what was experienced during the civil war between 1967 and 1970.

Aregbesola, however, blamed the current hardship on the inability of the former President, Goodluck Jonathan to secure the country’s pipelines, stressing that $40m was lost to oil theft per day under Jonathan’s regime.

Militants to declare Niger Delta Republic on August 1st


Adaka Boro Avengers (ABA) said on Sunday that it had concluded arrangements with other militant groups to declare the Niger Delta region an independent republic on August 1.

The militant group also gave the Federal Government an ultimatum to withdraw its personnel and establishment from the region before the date of its declaration of independence.

It also ordered all northerners and people of the South West to vacate its territory.

ABA, in a statement issued by General Edmos Ayayeibo, its spokesperson, mandated the Federal Government to use the three weeks’ notice to “move out all military personnel and all government agencies out of the Niger Delta,” and warned that “failure will lead to destruction of military barracks and personnel.”
