Turkey's Military attempts coup in Country Capital


The prime minister of Turkey, Prime Minister Binali Yildirim announced on Friday night in comments broadcast on NTV, a private television channel that factions of the military had attempted a coup on his government in Ankara., the country's capital.   He said:
“Some people illegally undertook an illegal action outside of the chain of command,”. “The government elected by the people remains in charge. This government will only go when the people say so.”
Reuters reported that the military had issued a statement saying it had “taken over” for “democratic order” and that “all existing foreign relations will continue.”

Nigeria Customs intercepts 625 cartons of fake drugs


Few weeks after the Nigeria Customs Service, NCS, Federal Operations Unit, FOU, Zone ‘C’, Owerri seized 906 cartons of fake drugs, the Command has again intercepted 625 cartons of fake and unregistered drugs brought illegally into the area by smugglers.

The Command also arrested 42 suspects in connection with the items.

Federal High Court rejects Omisore’s bail application


A Federal High Court in Abuja has turned down the bail application of the former Deputy Governor of Osun state, Iyiola Omisore, presently in the custody of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) for alleged fraud of N60 billion.

Ruling on the former Deputy Governor’s bail application, Justice Olukayode Adeniyi held that his application for bail is premature and incompetent.

Justice Adeniyi asked Mr Omisore to await the expiration of the 14-day remand order granted by a Court of Coordinate Jurisdiction before exercising his right to bail.

Four schools in Rivers State blacklisted for Exams Malpractice


Four schools in Rivers state have been blacklisted by WAEC for their involvement in Examination malpractice.

According to the WAEC Zonal Coordinator in Rivers State, Humphrey Ubaka, who refused to disclose the names of the affected schools said, “Some are private while others are public Schools. That means the schools have been de-listed and their recognition withdrawn as WAEC Centres”.

Henceforth, Candidates of the West African Examination Council, WAEC, caught engaging in Examination Malpractice will be barred from taking the examination for two years as punishment and as a deterrent to others.

Sisters apprehended for selling their babies


The Cross River State Police Command has arrested two sisters, Gift Etim Ikono and her sister, Esther Ikono and one woman, Florence Victor Ekpo, for child trafficking.

Commissioner of Police, Jimoh Ozi-Obeh, said the two girls gave birth to two different babies and the babies were allegedly sold out by Ekpo to an unknown buyer.

He said the investigation was still ongoing to get to the root of the matter.

APC youths urges Buhari to constitute NDDC board


The All Progressives Congress (APC) Southern Senatorial District Youths in Ondo State have urged President Muhammadu Buhari to urgently constitute board members for the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC).

The youths spoke through their senatorial youths leader, Mr. Soji Ogungbeni, to reporters shortly after their monthly meeting held in Okitipupa local government.

The youth leader blamed resuscitation of militancy in the Niger Delta region as the failure of the present administration to constitute the NDDC board.

Ogungbeni expressed optimism that if the government put in place the board, it would help to arrest the scourge of militants’ activities in the region.

University of Benin and CAN partners to curb social vices


Management of the University of Benin on Friday said it would collaborate with the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) in Edo to curb social vices in the institution and state.

This is contained in a statement by the Public Relations Officer of the university, Mr Michael Osasuyi, in Benin.

According to the statement, the Vice-Chancellor of the university, Prof. Faraday Orumwense, stated this when he received the President of CAN in the state, Rt. Rev. Peter Imasuen, who visited him.

Orumwense said the institution had been able to clamp down on social vices, especially cultism, adding that collaborating with the Christian body to curb cultism in state was a welcomed idea.

Nigeria stars will be barred from securing a work permit to play in England should the Super Eagles now slip outside the top 70 teams in the FIFA Rankings.

The latest FIFA ratings have the Eagles at 70th in the world and according to experts, Nigeria players will be hardest hit should the team fall outside this ranking as one of the rules states work permit will only be considered for non-European players whose countries are within the top 70 in the world.
“If they (Nigeria) slip one more place, its players can’t play in England,” said African football expert Tunde Adelakun.

Nigerian Pastor Arrested For Raping 14 year old


A Nigerian man of God based in Zambia, Prophet Andrew Ejimadu, has been arrested by the police in Lusaka, the country’s capital, for allegedly raping a 14-year-old girl, The Independent Observer reports.

Police report has it that the 39-year-old Prophet Ejimadu, a Minister with the Christ Freedom Ministries, was arrested alongside his 21-year-old younger brother, Cleopas Ejimadu, for defiling the girl who had gone to them for spiritual counselling.

Senate debunks impeachment reports on President Buhari


The Senate, yesterday, rebuffed insinuations of a plot to initiate impeachment proceedings against President Muhammadu Buhari, saying such suggestions were speculative.

The Senate’s disavowal came as Senator Dino Melaye also denied the claim but confirmed the altercation between himself and Senator Remi Tinubu, which he claimed was sparked by her use of provocative words against him.

Meanwhile, the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, yesterday, said it would not speak on the alleged impeachment threats against President Buhari.

Kemi Adeosun, minister of finance, has assured Nigerians that the government’s revenue generation focus will not be a burden to Nigerians, but a drive that will make every naira count.

Adeosun said the collection of revenue for sustainable and economic growth of the country must be a collaborative effort of the three tier of government, reflecting that there is one Nigeria and not a federal, state, and local government.

The minister said this at a retreat themed: ‘Enhancing Revenue Generation For Sustainable Development’, which is being attended by representatives from Lagos, Kano, Jigawa, Edo states.

In her keynote address at the opening ceremony of a two-day national revenue retreat in Kano on Thursday, Adeosun said all revenue due to Nigeria’s government, irrespective of the source, will be collected with “high degree of efficiency, fully receipted and properly accounted for”.

Buhari tells lawmakers, No jollification trip to Rio Olympics


President Muhammadu Buhari has given the directive that those who do not have any business in the Rio 2016 games should not be part of government’s contingent.

Chinyeaka Ohaa, permanent secretary, the ministry of youth ad sports, made the disclosure on Thursday when he appeared before the house of representatives committee on sports to brief it on the country’s Olympics preparation.

Ohaa said that paucity of the fund for the games necessitated the presidential directive on the account of the government list.

Following the submission of the third interim report of the Presidential Committee on the Audit of Defence Equipment Procurement from 2007 to 2015 to President Muhammadu Buhari, has approved further investigation of 18 serving and retired military personnel, 12 serving and retired public officials and 24 chief executive officers of companies involved in the procurement.

A statement released by the committee through the Ministry of Information and Culture said the report was released yesterday.

The statement by the committee’s president, Air Vice Marshal Jon Ode (rtd), said all were either accounting officers or played key roles in the Nigerian Army’s procurement activities during the period under review.

Nigeria's Naira declared Africa’s worst performing currency of 2016


The Nigerian naira took a dive on Thursday at both parallel and official markets, becoming the worst performing currency in Africa in 2016.

The naira, which began trading at around 283 to the dollar at the interbank market on Thursday, depreciated to 284/$1 to become the third worst performing currency in the world for 2016.

Nigerian naira, according to Bloomberg data, came ahead of only two currencies in the world – Venezuelan bolivar and Suriname dollar.

At the Nigerian parallel market, the naira fell to its lowest level since the start of the new foreign exchange regime, trading at 363/$1 and 485 to the pound in Abuja and Port Harcourt.

The Euro traded above N390 in Lagos and under 380 in the nation’s capital, Abuja.
