Arsenal FC Alexis Sanchez wins Best Player Award at 2016 Copa America


Alexis Sanchez was crowned the Copa America Centenario's best player after Chile won the tournament for the second successive year.

Defending champions Chile made it back-to-back wins with a 4-2 penalty shoot-out victory over Argentina following a goalless 120 minutes in Sunday's fiery final in New Jersey.

And afterwards at MetLife Stadium, Sanchez received the Golden Ball award for his efforts throughout the centenary tournament in the United States, where he scored three goals and had four assists.

US based Nigerian footballer, Fikayo Idowu drowns in lake (PHOTOs)


US based footballer, Fikayo Idowu, 19, who plays as a defender for the Ohio State football club, drowned in a central Ohio lake on Friday June 24th. Idowu had gone to the Apple Valley lake to swim with his team mates when the sad incident occurred. A dive team searched for him for 45 minutes and eventually recovered his body from the lake. He was rushed to the Columbus hospital where he was certified dead

His coach John Bluem said Idowu was an “unbelievably good human being.”

Kidnapped expatriates from Calabar finally regain freedom


The 7 expatriate contractors, including three Australians and a South African, have been released unharmed 4 days after they were kidnapped by gunmen in Calabar, Cross River State, Reuters reports

The Cross River State Security Adviser SSA, Mr Jude Ngaji, who confirmed the report told CrossRiverWatch that the expatriates were released early today (Sunday) morning.
Ngaji debunked claims that ransom was paid for their release. He also disclosed that all the foreigners were released unhurt without any injury while the two Nigerians sustained minor injuries possibly from torture by the kidnappers.

Junaid Mohammed tells Buhari to Treat Niger Delta avengers as Boko Haram terrorists


Outspoken Northern politician, Dr. Junaid Mohammed, has asked President Muhamadu Buhari to treat the Niger Delta Avengers, NDA, as terrorists and mete out appropriate military action against it as it is doing to Boko Haram insurgents in the north. 

Mohammed, who was a member of the last National Conference, told Vanguard in an interview on Sunday that it was wrong for the Buhari administration to try to appease the Niger Delta militants while still confronting a similar terrorist group in another part of the country. 

Kenneth Omeruo tag Nigeria World Cup Qualifying Group as "INTERESTING"


Nigeria defender Kenneth Omeruo has described the 2018 World Cup qualifying draw which sees Nigeria in Group B along with Algeria, Cameroon and Zambia as “interesting”. 

The draw, which held in Cairo, Egypt on Friday, pitted three-time African champions Nigeria in the same group as Africa’s best ranked team Algeria and former African champions Cameroon and Zambia. 

And reacting to the draw, Chelsea defender Omeruo said they must also prepare well for the qualifiers.

*36 States generates N682bn IGR

*Lagos generates more IGR than 32 States combined

An investigation by the Economic Confidential has shown that Fifteen States may go bankrupt as their Internally Generated Revenues (IGR) in 2015 were far below 10% of their Federation Account Allocations (FAA) in one year from June 2015 to May 2016.

The report further indicates that the IGR of Lagos State of N268bn is higher than that of 32 States combined together excluding Rivers, Delta and Ogun whose IGRs are very impressive. The 32 other states merely generated a total of N257bn in 2015.

Germany thrash Slovakia to set up meeting with either Spain or Italy


Germany began to click into top gear as they thrashed Slovakia 3-0 in Lille to book a quarter-final with one of their ghosts of Euros past, Spain or Italy.

After being held to a frustrating single-goal victory in their final pool game by a staunch Northern Ireland defence, Germany tore into Group B's third-placed team to assert their standing among the favourites for the trophy.

Christian Group urge Buhari to Pay more attention to Economic hardship faced by Nigerians


Following the economic hardship being experienced by Nigerians, the Youth Wing of the Christian Association of Nigeria (YOWICAN) has called on President Muhammadu Buhari to put in place cogent measures that will ease the suffering of citizens.

YOWICAN, in a press statement signed by its President, Daniel Kadzai and made available to journalists, on Sunday in Jos, also urged religious leaders to preach against corruption.

The statement while appreciating the efforts of Buhari in trying to stem corruption in all facets of the country, said there was need for the President to pay more attention to the growing economic hardship, unemployment, and non payment of salaries in some states.

A 17-year-old, blind Chihuahua named Sweepee Rambo has beaten 16 other contestants to emerge the world's ugliest dog and net its owner a £1000 cash prize and a six-foot trophy.

The dog impressed judges with its ugliness as it walked the red carpet. The World's Ugliest Dog competition, now in its 28th year, is held at the Sonoma-Marin Fairgrounds in Petaluma, California, about 40 miles (64 km) north of San Francisco.

A panel of judges score the contestants based on first impression, unusual attributes, natural ugliness and personality.

A day after they were sealed by Nigerian officials for loan default, some subsidiaries of Silverbird Group reopened for business on Friday afternoon, with apologies to their ''viewers, listeners and online subscribers''.

The Assets Management Corporation of Nigeria, AMCON, has now explained why that happened. You recall on Thursday, they had effected a court order to take possession of Silverbird Galleria Limited, Silverbird Promotions Limited, and Silverbird Showtime Limited which are part of the media group owned by businessman and politician, Ben Murray-Bruce, and his family.

The takeover was necessitated by an alleged failure of the three companies to repay about N11 billion credit they obtained from Union Bank of Nigeria.

Oh Dear! Woman Had Breast Cancer Because She Refused To Have Children


When Susan Leeming found she had stage three breast cancer at 42, she was relieved she had no children to distress with the devastating news.

But this small crumb of comfort turned out to be a leading cause of her illness.

According to Mirror UK, Susan’s biopsy showed the cancer cells developed because she’d never been a mum.

She was told women who have babies have lower oestrogen levels while hers were abnormally high enough to trigger the disease.

Pastor Mike Agbahiwe, an indigene of Orodo in Mbaitoli Local Government of Imo State whose wife was killed in Kano by Muslim Fanatics has, for the first time since the incident happened, come back to his home state. He met with Governor Rochas Okorocha at the Government House in Owerri yesterday with his relations and explained that contrary to the widely read report that his wife, Mrs. Bridget Agbahiwe was beheaded, she was beaten to death, not beheaded.

Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, Femi Adesina, has dismissed allegations by the national assembly leadership that the Presidency was behind its many travails. The Senate during its plenary last Tuesday June 21st, accused the presidency of using the judiciary to fight & intimidate the legislature.

The study sought to better understand the relationship between perceived attractiveness and condom use intentions in a heterosexual male population between ages 18-69. 

The researchers found that more attractive a woman was judged to be on average, the more likely participants would be willing to have sex with her and the less likely they were to intend to use a condom during sex. 
"Male perceptions of attractiveness influence their condom use intentions," the study said. 
"Such risk biases could profitably be discussed during sex education sessions and in condom use promotion interventions," the researchers noted.

Legendary New York Times photographer Bill Cunningham died Saturday, the paper announced, at the age of 87.

Cunningham worked at the Times for nearly 40 years, taking photographs of New Yorkers in their natural habitat: the city's bustling streets.

Rock Artist Steven Tyler Announces their band will embark on Farewell Tour in 2017


American rock Artist Frontman Steven Tyler confirmed earlier this week their band Aerosmith is planning a farewell tour for 2017, telling Howard Stern on Tuesday, "I love this band, I really do, and I want to squash every thought that anybody might have about this: The band's over."
"We're doing a farewell tour, but it's only because it's time," Tyler, 68, said.
The radio host made Tyler confirm it: Did he mean "farewell" as in the band would be gone for good?
"Yeah," Tyler said, adding that guitarist Joe Perry also knows. (Tyler's manager did not immediately respond to PEOPLE's request for comment.)
