Switzerland knockout of #EURO2016 by Poland after #Arsenal Granit Xhaka Penalty miss

Granit Xhaka's woeful spot-kick proved decisive as Poland beat Switzerland 5-4 on penalties to render Xherdan Shaqiri's sublime strike redundant in a 1-1 draw after extra time.

With Switzerland trailing 1-0 courtesy of Jakub Blaszczykowski's 39th-minute strike, Shaqiri produced a brilliantly executed bicycle kick to stun Poland and force an additional 30 minutes.

However, if Shaqiri's strike is now the standout contender for goal of the tournament, team-mate Xhaka's missed penalty was at the opposite end of the quality spectrum, the new Arsenal signing smashing his strike well wide of the target with Switzerland's second effort to leave them playing catch-up.

Grzergorz Krychowiak made no mistake with his chance to wrap up the victory, burying his shot beyond Yann Sommer and sending Poland into the last eight for the first time.

An armed robbery suspect, Chris Oboko, a corporal attached to the C4I unit of the Nigeria Police in Rivers State, has told investigators how an informant “lured” him into a gang of car snatchers.

Thirty-five-year-old Oboko, who has now been dismissed from the force, was recently arrested in Port Harcourt.

According to him, the turning point for him was when he encountered two members of a robbery and kidnapping gang, who were in the process of selling the cars they got from one of their victims.

Oboko, who joined the force in 2003 said he was living at the police barracks on Iche Street, Borokiri, Port Harcourt, while ‘moonlighting’ as a robber.

Saturday PUNCH learnt that he first served at the Boroki Police Division, before being transferred to the Special Anti-Robbery Squad. He told journalists that he became a member of the C4I unit after that.

Dr Marwan Farouk was supposed to repair a hernia and remove a cyst from his patient at the private BMI Chiltern Hospital in Buckinghamshire. But instead, he removed the entire right testicle and told staff to chuck it away - before refusing to tell the patient. 

The Medical Practitioners Tribunal Service ruled on Wednesday that Farouk had been misleading or dishonest.

World Cup Qualification: NFF will push for an experienced coach

The Director of Communications, Nigeria Football Federation, Ademola Olajire, says the football house will engage an experienced coach to guide the Super Eagles’ during the 2018 World Cup qualification.

Olajire made the assertion while reacting to the draws for the 2018 World Cup in Russia in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Saturday in Lagos.

Nigeria is drawn alongside Zambia, Algeria and Cameroon in the draws made on Friday at the African Football Confederations (CAF) Headquarters in Egypt.

Cameroon has appeared seven times in the tournament, while Nigeria has featured five times and Algeria four times.

NAF acquires 10 Helicopters to enhance operations, also Awaiting 10 Others

Chief of Air Staff, Air Marshal Sadiq Abubakar, announced the planned increase on Friday during a visit by the Governor of Kaduna State, Mr Nasir El-Rufai.

Air Marshal Abubakar said the Air Force had acquired 10 helicopters and was awaiting 10 other training aircraft in a bid to enhance its operations to adequately support both the internal and external security challenges confronting the nation, in line with globally accepted standards.

Beyond the partnership, the Chief of Air Staff announced ongoing reforms in the Air Force aimed at further contributing to fighting Nigeria’s internal and external security challenges.

IINFEDELITY: Wife beats husband to death for cheating on her

A lecturer in the Theatre Arts Department of the College of Education Oju in Benue State, Godwin Abuul, has been allegedly murdered by his wife for cheating on her.

‎It was gathered that Abuul, who went missing about two weeks ago in Gboko, was killed by his wife.

She allegedly dumped his remains in River Katsina/Ala.

The deceased, Vanguard reports were declared missing in Gboko two weeks ago after returning from Oju where he lectured at the state-owned College of Education.

Narrating the story, a family source said, “Goddy used to lecture at the College of Education in Oju. He travels weekly from here in Gboko to Oju to lecture, after which he returns to Gboko to spend his weekend with his wife and two children.
