Lassa Fever in Nigeria: Death toll rises to 101


The hemorrhagic Lassa fever virus has left more than 100 Nigerians dead since it staged a return in August last year,the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) has announced.

The NCDC says the toll of confirmed and suspected cases of Lassa currently stood at 175 with a total of 101 deaths since August.
“As at today, 19 (including Abuja) states are currently following up contacts or have suspected cases with laboratory results pending or laboratory confirmed cases,” said the disease control center.

According to reports, the president was quoted to have advised Nigerians against seeking asylum in the United Kingdom, noting that the country’s reputation for criminality 'has made it hard for them to be accepted abroad.'

Buhari said the motivating factor behind the decision of some Nigerians to join the migrant exodus to Europe, were purely economical, and not necessarily because of the dangers associated with remaining in Nigeria.

Haiti installs interim government as President Michel steps down


Report coming from Haitian leaders have signed an agreement to install a caretaker government as President Michel Martelly steps down amid violent protests and no successor in sight.

Under Saturday's deal, the interim government will run for four months before holding presidential elections by April 24 and transferring power to the winner in the following month.
"Despite this agreement, we will need to continue to remain vigilant because there are people who won't agree," Martelly, whose term comes to end on Sunday, said at an event with foreign diplomats at the palace.

Two killed as another Lagos boat capsizes at Badagry area


Two persons has been feared dead after another boat capsized in the Badagry area, just barely a week after seven people lost their lives in a boat accident in the Ikorodu area of Lagos State.

Punchng, gathered that the fibre boat took off on Saturday from Ebute Iworo Jetty, en route to Daddilowe in Badagry, when the crash occurred around 11 am. The boat had 10 people on board.

While eight people were rescued alive by emergency workers with the support of local divers, two other victims  a woman and the boat driver had yet to be seen.

It was learnt that the ill-fated boat crashed into a log of wood on the water. Only four of the passengers were reported to have used live jackets, while others did not.

Chargé d’Affaires of the Chinese Embassy in Nigeria, Mr. Qin Jian, who said this in a statement commemorating the 45th anniversary of its diplomatic activities in Nigeria, described economic cooperation between both countries as fruitful.

Qin said China was willing to integrate its development with independent and sustainable development of Nigeria and other African countries, so as achieve common development.

During one ABC News Republican Presidential debate, Real estate mogul Donald Trump drew boos from the audience when he told Jeb Bush to quiet down during a heated exchange on the issue of eminent domain.

Trump defended eminent domain, calling the expropriation of private property for public use an "absolute necessity" for the government to build schools, roads and bridges. He also argued the Keystone XL pipeline, which is widely supported by Republicans, "wouldn't go 10 feet" without the use of eminent domain.

Hajara began her career as a non-commissioned officer in 1986. She rose to become the first Hausa Muslim woman from a core Northern state to reach the rank of Wing Commander, equivalent to Lieutenant Colonel in the Army.

Hajara, a daughter of late Marafan Birnin Kudu, Colonel Bashari Umaru, from Birnin Kudu in Jigawa State, is currently the Chief Matron of Armed Forces Medical Hospital, Kano. She has been to war in Congo, served at Ibadan, Kaduna, among other places within the country.

A Kenyan National has won the Access Bank Lagos City Marathon! The winning time was 2 hours, 16 minutes, 21 seconds for the marathon which kicked off at Teslim Balogun Stadium in Surulere and ended at Eko Atlantic in Victoria Island. 

Kenya’s Abraham Kiptom, has emerged the winner of the much publicized Access Bank Lagos City 42.1km marathon after three hours of fierce race. He was crowned the winner in 2hrs 21 mins 20 secs ahead of his fellow compatriot, Hosea Kipkembe. Debebe Toise of Ethiopia came third behind the Kenyans.

Meek Mill Sentenced to 90 Days House Arrest to avoid Jail Sentence


This is really a bad time for Rapper Meek Mill, he has been ordered 6 to 12 months in county jail after he was found to have violated is probation back in December, but the Judge said he can spend that time on house arrest.

According to report, the judge will re-evaluate after 90 days to determine how much longer he’ll remain under house arrest. His sentence begins March 1st.

While under house arrest, he’s unable to do any ‘work’just charity work. That means no albums, no mixtapes, no performing, etc. After that, he’ll be on probation for another six years.

Jay Z's Tidal to Donates $1.5 Million to Black Lives Matter


Jay Z’s Tidal streaming service has announced it will donate $1.5 million to Black Lives Matter and social justice organizations aligned with the BLM message according to report from EW. The announcement comes on the day Trayvon Martin would have turned 21.
The money for the sizable donation was raised at Tidal’s sold-out charity concert in Brooklyn this October, which featured performances by many Tidal artists as well as owners Jay Z, Beyonce, and Nicki Minaj. At the concert, Usher and Nas performed “Chains,” which calls out police brutality against African Americans.

Queen of Snapchat and Model Katie May dies at 34 #NigeriansAreNotCriminals


According to reports from TMZ, and Katie May, a hugely successful model and social media star, died Thursday after a stroke left her in critical condition. 

May had been hospitalized since Monday when a blockage in her carotid artery caused the "catastrophic" stroke. She remained in critical condition until her death. Sources tell TMZ she was taken off life support Thursday evening, and she died in L.A. surrounded by family and loved ones.

Nigeria no longer among list of corrupt countries - Buhari Media Support Group



The Buhari Media Support Group (BMSG) has said that the the anti corruption war waged by President Muhammadu Buhari is yielding success which has led to the delisting of the country from the list of corrupt countries as compiled by Transparency International (TI).

In a press statement signed by the group’s national coordinator, Muhammad Labbo and the secretary, Cassidy Madueke, yesterday in Abuja, the group said that the campaign is gradually changing the image of the country to one where corrupt acts are no longer welcomed.

Ghanaian actor, John Dumelo, has said he has been receiving death threats following his controversial tweet stating that Ghanaian presidential candidate, Nana Akufo Addo, would loose the elections.
