Actress Julia Roberts loses mother at age 80

Popular Hollywood Actress Julia Roberts' beloved mother has died aged 80.

The 47-year-old actress has been left heartbroken after Betty Lou Bredemus passed away this morning (19.02.15) after losing her battle with lung cancer, according to PEOPLE.com.

Betty had been living with Julia, her husband Daniel Moder and their three children at her Los Angeles home but it is thought she died at St John's Health Center in Santa Monica, California.

It is believed Betty had been suffering with the disease for some time following reports a cancerous tumour was discovered on her lung during a routine MRI scan in November 2013.

The death of Betty Lou comes just 12 months after her daughter Nancy Motes - Julia's half-sister - died from an drugs overdose.

The shocking death was declared as suicide last May following various toxicology tests and an autopsy.

Officials revealed at the time that Nancy, 37, was discovered drowned in her bath on February 9, 2014, after taking various substances. Her body was also found with a note.

The 'August: Osage County' star admitted previously that her sibling's sudden death had hit her and their family hard.

She said: "It's just heartbreak ... You don't want anything bad to happen to anyone, but there are so many tragic, painful, inexplicable things in the world. But [as with] any situation of challenge and despair, we must find a way, as a family. It's so hard to formulate a sentence about it outside the weepy huddle of my family. ... Meditation or chanting or any of those things can be so joyous and also very quieting."

Souleymane S, the man denied access to a Paris Metro train by a number of Chelsea supporters this week, will be invited to their UEFA Champions League second-leg meeting with Paris Saint-Germain.

The 33-year-old Parisian, who is black, was blocked from entering the carriage at the Richelieu-Drouot station before being pushed back onto the platform while the group sang racially charged songs.

The incident took place prior to the first leg of Chelsea's last-16 meeting with PSG, which ended 1-1.

158 kidnapped Victims by Boko Haram reunite with families in Yobe

A total of 158 Women and children abducted by Boko Haram insurgents from Katarko village in Yobe have been reunited with their families in Damaturu, Yobe. The victims were released by the sect members after three weeks of captivity. Alhaji Ahmed Goniri, the state Commissioner for Justice and Chairman of the State Committee on Rehabilitation of Victims of Insurgency, said this while addressing newsmen in Damaturu on Thursday.

“The victims were screened by security operatives to authenticate their status while government provided them with psychological therapy to ease their trauma,” Goniri said.

NAN reports that the victims were released by the insurgents three weeks ago but remained in custody of security agencies to undergo screening to ensure that they were indeed captives. Alhaji Abdurahman Dauda, a displaced person, said his wife and six girls were released by the insurgents.

The police in Lagos state have arrested a Muslim cleric named Fatai Afobaje (pictured far left) for conniving with some of his friends including a security officer (middle) to kill and share the body parts of his bosom friend, 40 year old Kwara indigene, Rafiu Suleiman (pictured right) for money rituals at Oko Agbonla, Magbon in Badagry area of Lagos state on Friday February 13th.

According to Punch, Alfa Fatai and Suleiman became friends after they met inside a public transport where Suleiman paid for the transport fare of Alfa Fatai as a mark of respect. After that, the two became friends.

So sad! Veteran Journalist Dada is Gone! Dada Eriye who hails from Delta State, was reported to have died yesterday, February 18, 2015 at the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of Lagos University Teaching Hospital (LUTH), Idiaraba after suffering severe burns from a generator accident in his house during the weekend (February 14, Valentine’s day). 

According to his colleagues, Dada was refueling his generator at about 11.30pm on Saturday Feb. 14 when the accident occurred causing severe burns. He was rushed to LUTH where he was placed on life support machine. He died yesterday.

A suspected illegal immigrant from the Niger Republic, Shuaib Kaneda, says many illegal immigrants usually entered Nigeria by paying between N300 and N500 to unidentified persons.

Shuaib added that he had spent eight years in Nigeria, but could not acquire valid documents before he was arrested by officials of the Nigeria Immigration Service, Lagos State Command.

The 34-year-old was among 82 illegal immigrants paraded on Wednesday at the command’s office in Alagbon, Lagos.

The suspects were said to have been arrested at different parts of the Lagos Island area after an intelligence report.

Shuaib was arrested along with a relative, Idris, who had spent barely one year in the country when he was caught.

Nicki Minaj is “so sad” after two of her crew members were stabbed during an altercation in Philadelphia on Tuesday.

According to TMZ De'Von Pickett, 29, who worked as the rapper's road and tour manager was killed while another crew member, 27-year-old Eric Parker, was left in a critical condition. And the Super Bass singer seemingly confirmed the reports by posting a photograph of the two men on Instagram on Wednesday morning.

“These guys flew into Philly for my tour rehearsals 2 days ago and were both stabbed last night. #RIPDAYDAY condolences to your family. Unbelievable,” she wrote. “Eric (on the right) is recovering. Another senseless act of violence that took the life of a great guy. So sad.(sic)”

Samsung Ready to Rival Apple Pay in Mobile Wallet Payment, acquires LoopPay

Apple Pay may have a new competitor in the mobile wallet space.

Today, mobile payment startup LoopPay revealed it has been purchased by Samsung Electronics for an undisclosed amount.

Samsung was said to be in talks with LoopPay back in December, but now it looks like the two struck a deal, according to a letter on LoopPay’s website. The note says that the company is now a subsidiary of Samsung Electronics America:

The results, reported today in Nature, appear so promising that the researchers believe it may be able to work as an effective HIV vaccine. The research was led from the Scripps Research Institute.

Jega tells Senators he can’t guarantee elections will hold March 28

The Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, Attahiru Jega, has told Nigerian federal lawmakers he could not guarantee the 2015 general elections will hold on rescheduled dates in March and April.

At a meeting with Senators Wednesday, Mr. Jega said he could not commit himself to the “sanctity” of March 28 and April 11 – dates for the rescheduled Nigeria’s general elections.

He said the electoral commission could not guarantee aspects of the poll that are beyond its control.

Mr. Jega met with the lawmakers to review the decision to postpone the polls from February.
