Nigeria’s D’Tigers’ chances of making it to the quarter-finals of the men’s basketball event of Rio 2016 was dealt a severe blow when they lost 89-80 in their second game to world No.3 Lithuania on Tuesday night.

D’Tigers, who lost their opening match to Argentina, started brilliantly in the opening minutes of the game with Ike Diogu hitting the first bucket of the game.

Ondo State medical workers suspend indefinite strike


Medical workers in Ondo State under the auspices of National Association of Government General Medical and Dental Practitioners have suspended their industrial action on Tuesday.

The association, which is an affiliate of the Nigerian Medical Association, embarked on a strike action over two months ago following the inability of the state government to pay its members their five months salaries.

Zidane hails Sergio Ramos after Real Madrid’s Super Cup victory


Zinedine Zidane hailed the work of Sergio Ramos as the captain delivered a stoppage-time equaliser that allowed Real Madrid to go on and beat Sevilla 3-2 in the UEFA Super Cup on Tuesday.

Ramos had allowed Sevilla to take the lead in the second half when he tripped up Vitolo in the box for a penalty, but he redeemed himself with a 93rd-minute header.

Security Man beaten to stupor for not Feeding Dogs


A 47-year-old man, simply identified as Nwokedi Henry alleg­edly beat his security man, Shehu Garuba to coma yesterday morning in Sulieman Barua Road behind Sarafinna in Suleja, Niger State.

Henry was a dog trainer. He allegedly beat the se­curity man to coma for not serving food to the dogs.

Henry narrated to our correspondent, the way and manner his security has tor­tured his dogs in his absence.

At least 150 undergraduate academic programmes in Nigeria’s public and private universities are unaccredited.

According to Premium Times, the 2016 accreditation status report by the National Universities Commission (NUC), exclusively obtained by this newspaper, the unaccredited courses are domiciled in 37 of 143 universities in the country.

The Quality Assurance Department of the NUC is in charge of accrediting courses in the universities.

For a course to be accredited, the NUC says, it must meet the Benchmark Minimum Academic Standards (BMAS) that has been drawn up by the commission.

CBN Governor denies reducing foreign exchange rate for pilgrims


The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has debunked claims in certain quarters suggesting that prospective pilgrims have been granted concessionary foreign exchange rate for the 2016 pilgrimage.

This is contained in a statement in Abuja on Tuesday by the bank's acting Director of Communications, Mr Isaac Okorafor.

According to the statement, the CBN Governor, Mr Godwin Emefiele, said there was no preferential exchange rate of any sort to intending pilgrims.

NFF set to pay Siasia, Others $60,000


The Nigeria Football Federation(NFF) President, Amaju Pinnick has disclosed he has directed that a grant of $60,000 recently received from the Confederation of African Football (CAF) be used to clear the unpaid salaries of Nigeria Olympic team coach Samson Siasia and his assistants.

Before the Olympics in Rio, Siasia told the media he has not received his salary for five months.

47-Year-Old Man Arrested for Raping an 18-Month-Old Baby


Emmanuel Magbatie, a 47-year-old man, has been arrested for allegedly having carnal knowledge of an 18-month-old girl in Owutu axis of Ikorodu, Lagos State.

This came barely a week after the Lagos State Government sought compulsory psychiatric test for rape and other domestic violence offenders in the country.

It was gathered that Magbatie, an artisan, who reside in same building as the victim’s parents, defiled the girl last week Wednesday, August 3, 2016.

NNPC MD debunks Petrol Pump Price increment rumors


NNPC Group Managing Director, Maikanti Baru has ruled out the possibility of any increment in petrol pump price. Baru said this today to state house correspondents while reacting to media reports that oil marketers may soon increase pump price of petrol due to the scarcity of dollar and high exchange rates. I support death penalty for coup plotters - Turkey's President says


Turkey's President Recep Tayyip Erdogan says he will support the reintroduction of the death penalty after last month’s failed coup, as long as the Turkish public and parliament approve the measure.

The streets of Istanbul were overflowing with supporters of Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan on Sunday night with more than a million people attending a rally in the wake of last month’s failed military coup. Michael Jordan contribute $5 million to National Museum of African American History and Culture


NBA Legend Michael Jordan has donated $5 million to the National Museum of African American History and Culture, museum officials announced Monday.

The monetary gift is the largest from a sports figure/personality to the museum. It pushes private donations to the museum to $278 million. Jordan, 53, also gave a jersey that he wore during the 1996 NBA Finals to the museum’s permanent collection.

Including aid from the federal government, the museum, which President Obama will open September 24, has raised more than $548 million.

Bayelsa State Government condemns killings of soldiers


Bayelsa State Government has commiserated with the Nigerian Military over the brutal killing of three soldiers by armed bandits at Nembe City in Nembe Local Government Area of the state.

Addressing the people of Nembe at the King Koko Square, Nembe, Governor Seriake Dickson noted that the killing of the soldiers was senseless, barbaric and not in the best interest of the government and people of the State, especially the peace loving people of Nembe.

The Governor, who was represented by his Deputy, Retired Rear Admiral Gboribiogha John Jonah, described the incident as mos painful and unfortunate, pointing out that, a similar one occurred in July, last year, where soldiers were attacked at the same security check-point in Nembe, resulting in deaths.

Nigerian troops storm Bayelsa creeks in search of militants


Search for Niger Delta militants began, Tuesday, as stern-looking and war-kitted troops barricaded some creeks and waterways of Bayelsa State.

The operation commenced following the declaration by the Joint Task Force (JTF), Operation Delta Safe (ODS) that it would go “on the offensive” to fish out all the militants and killers of soldiers at a military checkpoint in Nembe on Monday morning.

Militants dared the military on Monday when they ambushed the checkpoint, killed three soldiers on duty and carted away gunboats, rifles and ammunition.

ASUU, OOU branch begins indefinite sit-at-home action over N3.5bn unpaid arrears


Lecturers of the Olabisi Onabanjo University (OOU), Ago-Iwoye, Ogun State yesterday announced a sit-at-home action, saying the suspension of all teaching activities would continue until the state government was ready to pay their 23 months subvention arrears.

The lecturers, under the aegis of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), OOU branch, said the industrial action became imperative because government had failed to implement the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed with them in December.
