Germany's von Weizsaecker, president at unification, dies at 94

BERLIN (Reuters) - Former president Richard von Weizsaecker, who challenged German attitudes about the Holocaust by arguing that the country had been liberated by the Nazi defeat in 1945, died on Saturday at the age of 94, the current president's office said.

A member of one of Germany's most distinguished aristocratic families, von Weizsaecker also presided over the reunification of East and West Germany in 1990, 11 months after the fall of the Berlin Wall.

Thirty-two pregnant women in the Sunyani West District tested HIV positive in 2014, when they were screened at the antenatal clinic, statistics from the District Directorate of Health, has revealed.

Mrs Eva Aryee, the Sunyani West District Director of Health, who disclosed, on Friday, said the patients had been placed on anti-retroviral therapy to protect their unborn babies.

Addressing the 2014 Annual Performance Review Meeting of the Directorate at Fiapre, near Sunyani, Mrs Aryee said the patients were among the 3,117 pregnant women who were screened in the period.

Obanikoro insists that Buhari was Stoned in Lagos

Musiliu Obanikoro, the immediate past Minister of State for Defence, on Saturday insisted that the presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress [APC], Muhammadu Buhari, was stoned in Lagos on Friday on his way to his party’s presidential rally at the Teslim Balogun Stadium.

Mr. Obanikoro had posted a comment on twitter on Friday condemning the purported stoning of Mr. Buhari, suggesting that the APC candidate was so attacked.

But the National Publicity Secretary of the APC, Lai Mohammed, promptly issued a statement, saying Mr. Buhari was never attacked and that Mr. Obanikoro was playing political games.

NEDG: 6,000 Questions Lined Up For Presidential Debates

Ahead of the Presidential debate the general Secretary, Nigerian Guild of Editors, Mr Isaac Ighure, on Friday said Nigerians had “responded positively” by sending in 6,000 questions for the presidential debates, organised by the Nigeria Election Debate Group.

Speaking in Abuja on Friday, Ighure said the questions would be considered and harmonised by the Questions Harmanisation Committee of the NEDG.

He said the group had, however, forwarded all the thematic areas that questions might be drawn from to all participating political parties to help them prepare for the debates.

Shakira names newborn son Sasha

Earlier today we brought you news that Shakira and Pique welcome their new Baby Boy. Shakira has gone ahead to name her newborn son Sasha Piqué Merbarak.

The 37-year-old singer, who also has two-year-old son Milan with boyfriend Gerard Piqué, welcomed their second child into the world in a hospital in Barcelona, Spain on Thursday night (01.29.15) via a scheduled Caesarean section.

The 'Beautiful Liar' hitmaker and the baby ''are in excellent health,'' and the couple also explained the meaning of their tot's name in a statement via Shakira's website today (01.30.15), writing: ''We are happy to announce the birth of Sasha Piqué Mebarak, son of Shakira Mebarak and Gerard Piqué, born January 29 at 9:54pm, in Barcelona. The name Sasha is of Greek and Russian descent and means 'defender of mankind' and 'warrior.'

''The hospital confirmed that both mother and child are in excellent health.''

Gerard's proud father Amador Bernabéu also revealed Sasha looks more like the professional soccer player.

He told Hello! Magazine: ''They've told me he looks like Gerard. Milan looked like Shakira when he was born, but this one looks more like his father.''

The musician began dating the sportsman in 2010 and previously spoke about the joy she gets from being a mother, saying, ''motherhood is everything to me'', as well as praising her partner's hands-on parenting style.

She said: ''He is very involved with his son. He is always there for him, and that's a big advantage for me as I cannot imagine it any other way.''

The National Assembly Election Petitions Tribunal sitting in Minna on Friday declared David Umaru of of the All Progressives Congress, APC, as the winner of the August 30 election in the Niger East Senatorial District.

 The candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, Zagbayi Nuhu, was initially declared winner of the election by the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, after a rerun.

Rapper Suge Knight arrested for murder

The rap mogul was declared a wanted man by police yesterday following a hit-and-run in Los Angeles in which one man died.

His lawyer James Blatt insisted he would be turning himself in, which has now happened.
