Photo: ECOWAS Troops Engage Pro-Jammeh Elements In Deadly Shootout After Entering Gambia


West African troops entered The Gambia Sunday to secure President Adama Barrow’s arrival from neighbouring Senegal, as controversy erupted over the assurances offered to Yahya Jammeh to guarantee his exit, reports AFP.

The troops were involved in a fierce shootout with pro-Jammeh elements and mercenaries.

Former President Yahya Jammeh flew out of The Gambia on Saturday, ending 22 years at the helm of the tiny west African nation, and landed in Equatorial Guinea a few hours later where he is expected to settle with his family.

Yahya Jammeh flees Gambia (Photos)


Gambia’s former President, Yahya Jammeh, on Friday night left the country to Guinea in the wake of elections that ousted him after 22 years in power. 

Yahya left the country in the company of his wife and Guinean president, Alpha Conde. Adama Barrow who is his successor would return to the country to assume office after he was sworn in at the Gambian Embassy in Senegal on Thursday.

35-year-old woman allegedly stabbed and killed a NEPA official for disconnecting her light


Ediale Ayodele, a 35-year-old woman who lives at No. 6, Ayodola Close, Akonwonjo, allegedly stabbed an official of Ikeja Electric company in Lagos State. 

According to Daily Post, Ediale, who was arrested by the Nigeria Security and Civil Defense Corps, NSCDC, took a knife and stabbed the unnamed NEPA official who had come to the said property to check on a disconnection carried out some weeks back when the altercation occurred. He was rushed to the General Hospital at Alimosho, where he was confirmed dead.

Photos: Indian authorities seize over N26 million from Nigerian man at Delhi airport


Indian authorities seized over Rs 58 lakh equivalent to about $85,000 (that's N26,987,500.00) from a Nigerian national identified as one Tochukwu Chijioke, who was travelling to Coimbatore on at the Delhi airport.

Of the total cash seized, almost Rs 54 lakh, was in the newly introduced Rs 2000 & Rs 500 currency notes, while the remaining Rs 4 lakh was in discontinued high-value notes of Rs 500 and Rs 1000.

Tochukwo Chijioke was identified by CISF personnel present at the Indira Gandhi International Airport on December 23.

Tanzania | Woman gives birth to triplets at IDP camp (Photo)

Nyandwi Velelia, an IDP who lives in Tanzania's Nduta refugee camp gave birth to triplets four days ago at the camp's MSF-run maternity ward, where almost 490 babies were born last month.  

Nyandwi and her new baby boys are all healthy: the delivery was straightforward and the family was discharged quickly from hospital.

Papua New Guinea experience 7.9 magnitude earthquake strike


According to the US Geological Survey, a magnitude 7.9 earthquake has struck west of Papua New Guinea. The quake was 153 kilometers (95.5 miles) deep and centered 40 kilometers (24 miles) west of the town of Panguna.

Preliminary reports said the earthquake, which occurred at 2:30 p.m. local time Sunday (11:30 p.m. Saturday ET) measured 8.0 but USGS later downgraded its magnitude.

11 persons killed in Georgia following severe weather


Eleven people were killed and 23 were injured after severe weather struck southern Georgia, officials said Sunday.

Catherine Howden of the Georgia Emergency Management Agency said the deaths occurred in Cook, Brooks and Berrien counties in southern Georgia near the Georgia-Florida line.

She said the deaths were related to severe weather but could not specify whether tornadoes were the cause. Tornado warnings had been issued for parts of Georgia overnight.
