A man was shot and killed by police after attempting to hijack a helicopter at an Oregon airport on Monday.
Read via NYDN:
Shots rang out at Hillsboro Airport at about 11:40 a.m., after the man jumped a fence and confronted two people, a flight instructor and student, sitting inside the aircraft, Hillsboro police officials said.
The gunman fired at least one shot away from the victims. No one was hurt during the tarmac encounter.
Police said the instructor and student escaped as Hillsboro Aero Academy employees held the suspect briefly at gunpoint with their own weapons.
The suspect still managed to escape by hopping over the fence again at the airport, about 16 miles west of Portland. He was confronted by police minutes later in a field and shot dead.
The suspect and officer were not immediately identified. There were no reports of other injuries.
It was not immediately clear why the man was trying to steal the helicopter.
One witness said they saw a masked man with a hoodie fleeing police.
