The Federal Government should introduce subsidy in the education sector to defeat insurgency and militancy in the country, the National Association of Nigerian Students has said.
The organisation also called on President Muhammadu Buhari to establish special courts on anti-corruption matters, saying the delay in prosecution of individuals involved in corruption cases was inimical to the anti-corruption crusade of his administration.
The President of NANS, Chinonso Obasi, stated these during a thanksgiving service held at the Faith Miracle International Church, Abuja, to mark the end of the three-day prayer declared by the students for the quick recovery of Buhari.
Obasi noted that the easiest way for government to defeat insurgency and militancy in the country was to introduce subsidy in education sector so that more Nigerian youths could have access to quality education.
He said that Nigerian students were the most marginalised group in the country, adding that many of them faced great challenges trying to acquire education.
He said that it was ironic that the Federal Government claimed not to charge school fees in its institutions only for the institutions to introduce charges that outweighed what would have been charged as tuition.
While seeking the introduction of subsidy in the education sector to afford every Nigerian child the opportunity to get adequately educated, Obasi appealed to the Buhari government to consider such steps as one of his legacies.
Obasi said, “We, the Nigerian students, are the most marginalised people in this country. We are appealing to President Buhari to subsidise education. When you train a Nigerian child, you have trained a nation.
“Let’s save the future by educating every Nigerian child. Government should subsidise education; there should be some percentage paid by government to help the Nigerian child to go to school. If a child does not have what it takes to go to school, if parents don’t have what it takes to go to school, the government must come in.
“We are appealing to Mr. President that the Federal Government should establish a special anti-corruption court. We are calling for this special anti-corruption court because of the delay in prosecuting corruption cases in conventional courts.’’
He also asked Buhari to direct anti-corruption agencies to beam their searchlights on tertiary institutions, saying there were cases of monumental corruption going on in the nation’s ivory towers.’’
