Arsenal endured another European evening to forget as they set an unwanted club record in the second leg of their Champions League last-16 encounter with Bayern Munich.
Already trailing the German giants 5-1, the Gunners entered the contest knowing that they had a continental mountain to climb.
Things started brightly as Theo Walcott fired them in front, but that would be as good as it got for a fanbase that had already aired their anger at Arsene Wenger prior to kick-off.
Laurent Koscielny was sent off for bringing down Robert Lewandowski inside the box early in the second half, and the tide turned back in Bayern’s favour.
Their Polish striker dusted himself down to convert from the spot, before former Chelsea winger Arjen Robben returned to haunt the Gunners once more with a record-breaking strike that made the score 7-2 on aggregate.
With Arsenal’s 10 men no longer having the stomach for a fight, the scoreline became even more embarrassing after that.
Douglas Costa added a third and Arturo Vidal two more as under-fire Wenger suffered another humbling evening in the home dugout.
Bayern have been a thorn in Arsenal’s side for some years now and the Gunners will be hoping their paths do not cross again for some time as their attention turns to securing a return to the Champions League through their domestic standing.
