An Iwo High Court Judge in Osun, Justice Moshood Adeigbe, on Monday sentenced two men, Sunday Ishaih, and his friend, Akeem Lamidi, to death by hanging for armed robbery.
The duo were arraigned earlier on a two-count charge of conspiracy to commit robbery and armed robbery
Adeigbe in his ruling said that the state prosecutor had proven his case beyond any reasonable doubt.
He said that it was established that the duo committed the robbery offences.
The judge, therefore, pronounced the duo guilty and sentenced them to death by hanging.
Earlier, the state Prosecuting Counsel, Mr Bamidele Salawu, told court that the defendants on May 2, 2012, armed with guns, invaded the residence of one Mrs Aladete at Asabi Okin in Iwo.
Salawu said the accused forcefully gained entrance into their victim’s apartment by breaking the wall into her sitting room.
He told the court that the woman was thoroughly beaten by the accused.
The prosecutor said that the accused stole some items from the house of the victim along with her official vehicle.
Salawu said the two men were later arrested at Ibafo in Ogun by officials of the Nigeria Police, when they were about selling the stolen vehicle.
He said the offences contravened Section 6 (b) and section 1 (1) and (2), (a) of the Robbery and Fire Arms (Special Provisions) Act Cap. R, 11 Laws of the Federation of Nigeria, 2004.
The convicts had pleaded not guilty to the charges.
Counsel to the accused Mr. C.N.N. Okwusidi, pleaded with the judge to temper justice with mercy in his ruling but his plea was not answered.
