Niger Delta Militants Blow Up Two NPDC Pipelines In Delta


Gunmen suspected to be Niger Delta militants, on Friday, blew up two pipelines belonging to the Nigerian Petroleum Development Company, NPDC, in Delta State.

The attack which occurred at about 2am on Friday was said to have bee carried out by a new militant group, Niger Delta Greenland Justice Mandate, Vanguard reports.

A manhunt has been launched by the Nigerian Police in Abuja for a Ghanaian identified as Asiedu Ofei, and a Nigerian named Femi, reportedly notorious for producing fake currencies.

According to a report by Punch Metro, Ofei who was arrested sometime in July, 2016 in Ekiti State with seven cartons filled with counterfeited naira notes and cedis, had led the police operatives to apprehend his gang members in Seme, Lagos State, when he escaped.

Borussia Dortmund have announced a record turnover of €376.3 million over the financial year between July 1 2015 and June 30 2016, an increase of 36.6 percent compared to the previous year.

Sokoto Sultan says there is No plan to Islamize Nigeria


The Sultan of Sokoto and President of the Supreme Council of Islamic Affairs, Alhaji Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar III have cleared the air over suspicion of a grand plan to turn Nigeria into an Islamic State.

Sultan stated categorically that, it is not possible for a multi-religious nation like Nigeria to either be Islamized or Christianised.

He stated this Friday, at the commissioning of the International Centre for Inter-Faith Peace and Harmony’s office in Kaduna.

Police recruitment: PSC shortlists 110,469 applicants


The Police Service Commission on Friday said it shortlisted 110,469 applicants out of the 338, 250 applicants invited for the just concluded screening at the states and FCT Police Commands.

The Chairman of the commission, Mr Mike Okiro, who disclosed this at a news conference in Abuja on Friday said the aptitude tests for the successful candidates would begin on August 22 across the 36 states and FCT.

He said that out of the 110, 469 applicants, 22, 454 were shortlisted for Cadet ASPs, 24, 456 for Cadet Inspectors and 63, 559 for Police Constables.

Nigerians Studying in Private Schools in Turkey move to Public Schools


Nigerian students currently studying in Turkish private universities that have been shut down in the wake of the failed coup, have now been transferred to public schools where they will pay very little or no tuition, the Turkish Ambassador to Nigeria, Hakan Çakıl, has said.

A statement issued by the Deputy Director (Press and Public Relations) in the Ministry of Education, Ben Bem Goong, said Cakil made the clarification during a courtesy visit to the Minister of Education, Mr. Adamu Adamu, on Friday in Abuja.

United Nations says Food aid demand in Northeast could double in a month


The number of people in northeast Nigeria who need food aid could nearly double within a month, as the Boko Haram insurgency and economic pressures intensify suffering, the UN said Friday.

A crisis fuelled by years of radical Islamist violence has left more than three million people in the northeast “in a state of moderate or severe food insecurity,” said Bettina Luescher, spokeswoman for the UN’s World Food Programme.

But tough economic conditions in Nigeria caused by low oil prices and surging inflation could see that number rise to 5.5 million “next month”, Luescher told reporters in Geneva.

Two members of a kidnap gang were caught by a combined team of policemen, local vigilante and hunters. According to Abia Facts Newspaper, the kidnappers identified as Obiora and Livinus, natives of Umuanu in Ndia Agu kidnapped a grandmother, killed and buried her in the bush after collecting the sum of Five million naira from her family. No further details were given on the victim.

A former Delta State Chief Judge, Honorable Justice James Omo-Agege, has died. According to family sources, the legal luminary died after a brief illness yesterday evening August 18th. He was the state Chief Judge from October 1993 to November 1998. May his soul rest in peace, Amen.

1,600 cases of pipeline vandalism recorded since January – Minister


The Minister of State for Petroleum Resources, Dr. Ibe Kachikwu, says Nigeria recorded 1,600 cases of pipeline vandalism since January.

Kachikwu disclosed this at the 2016 Annual Conference of the National Association of Energy Correspondents, with the theme: “Low Oil Price: Impact and the Way Forward.” The conference was held in Lagos on Thursday.

The minister also revealed that the country recorded over 3,000 pipeline vandalism cases from 2010 to 2015 and added that the impact of attacks on oil and gas pipelines was that there was no money to fund the 2016 budget.

Lawyer seeks special salary structure for teachers

One Chike Nnaemeka has been arrested by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission EFCC for allegedly tricking an official of the Federal Road Safety Corps into marrying him and paying for the wedding.

Oil production drops by 29 percent against 2016 Budget projection – FG


The Federal Government on Thursday revealed that the country’s crude oil production had dropped by 29 percent, as against the nation’s 2016 budget target of 2.2 million barrels per day, an indication that Nigeria’s current economic crisis might still linger for a longer time.

The Minister of State for Petroleum Resources, Dr. Ibe Kachikwu, who disclosed this at the national conference of the National Association of Energy Correspondents (NAEC), with the theme, ‘Low Oil Price: Challenges and the Way Forward’, stated that the nation’s actual crude oil production was at 1.56 million barrels per day, about 700,000 barrels per day below the budget’s target production.

A former Chairman of the House of Representatives Committee on Appropriation, Hon. Abdulmumin Jibrin, has asked the Federal High Court, Abuja to restrain the leadership of the House of Representatives from suspending him.

Jibrin, representing Kiru/Bebeji Federal Constituency of Kano State, urged the court to set aside the decision of the Speaker, Yakubu Dogara, and Uzoma Abonta pending the determination of the case.

NABTEB releases May/June 2016 examination results


The National Business and Technical Examination Board (NABTEB) on Thursday released the May/June 2016 examination results, in which it declared that of the 69,472 candidates that enrolled for the examination nationwide 38,280 recorded five credit passes, including English and mathematics.

Disclosing this in a briefing with journalists in Benin, Edo State, on the release of the results, the Prof. (Mrs.) Ifeoma Isuigo-Abanihe, NABTEB Registrar/Chief Executive Officer, said the exercise was carried out in 1,530 centres nationwide.

NABDA boss says Nigeria produces 1.1mmt of fish annually, consume 3.2mt


Lucy Ogbadu, Director-General, National Biotechnology Development Agency (NABDA), has revealed that Nigeria produces a paltry 1.1 million metric tons of fish annually but consumes about 3.2 million metric tons annually.

This leaves a huge gap of two million tons in the supply of fish and fish products.

Ogbadu spoke at the graduation ceremony of 38 females who received training on fish spawning and breeding in Kano on Wednesday.

Uber to launch First Self-Driving Car service in Pittsburgh


Uber said Thursday it would deploy driverless cars for its ride-sharing services in Pittsburgh this month, pushing the envelope for the use of self-driving technology.

A high-ranking Olympic official was arrested while naked in his son’s Rio de Janeiro hotel room.

Pat Hickey, the president of the Olympic Council of Ireland, has been charged with selling tickets for prices higher than face value, in a scheme that could have profits of more than $3.1million.

Hickey, 71, is accused of conspiring with some six others to sell the illegal Olympic tickets.

Man abandons matrimonial home after impregnating 'sister'
