A plane has skidded off the runway during takeoff at Goa airport. The Jet Airways aircraft was headed to Mumbai, India with 161 people on board, including seven crew members, when the incident took place in the early hours of Tuesday morning.
Flight 9W 2374 veered off the runway at Dabolim airport in Goa while aligning for takeoff, the Indian Express reported. Some 12 passengers are believed to have been injured, the airline said.
In a statement, Jet Airways said all passengers have been evacuated safely.
"All guests and crew have been safely evacuated. Few guests have sustained injuries during the evacuation process,” Jet Airways said.
As the aircraft was being evacuated, it reportedly tilted forward, sparking panic amongst passengers, an eyewitness said.
The cause of the accident is not yet known. Officials said Dabolim airport would be closed for investigations until 12.30 pm.
The Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB) will investigate.
