China's most wanted fugitive, who is accused of embezzling $40million from public funds, has returned to the country after 13 years on the run. Yang Xiuzhu, a former deputy mayor in the eastern city of Wenzhou, arrived in Beijing on Wednesday after hiding in countries across Asia, Europe, and North America.
She was filmed on live state television being led off a plane by two policewomen before going to a room to hear the charges against her read out by a prosecutor.
The 70-year-old topped a list of China's 100 most wanted corruption suspects who Beijing has asked international crime agency Interpol to help catch.
Her arrest was seen as the latest success for President Xi Jinping's battle against politicians abusing their public office for personal gain.
