Three Police Officers In Court For Torturing Man To Death In Lagos


Three policemen, Inspector Surulere Irede, Sergeant Sunday Ogunyemi and Corporal Hezekiah Babatunde, were on Wednesday re-arraigned at the Lagos State High Court in Ikeja, for the alleged unlawful killing of one Olayode Ayoade.

Irede, 46, Ogunyemi , 40, and Babatunde were docked before Justice Sendoten Ogunsanya on a count of manslaughter.


The court was informed that a fourth defendant, Onifade Abimbola, 38, was at large.

The defendants, who pleaded not guilty to the amended charge, were accused of torturing Ayoade on July 24, 2014 at about noon at Elere Police Station, Agege, Lagos.

The deceased and three others were said to have been arrested that morning in front of their residence, 14, Ajayi Ibe Street, Orile Agege, by policemen on patrol. Ayoade was said to have died hours later at a private hospital at Elere.

According to counsel to the first and second defendants, Mr. B. T. Akiredo, his clients were arraigned last November 6, at the Ebute-Meta Magistrates’ Court, Lagos which granted them bail on May 4.

Justice Ogunsanya adjourned the matter till November 16, for hearing of their bail application.
