Social Media Users slam Facebook for turning 'sad face' emoji into Frankenstein's monster for Halloween

In a bid to key into the Halloween celebration Facebook altered the regular reaction emoji to something which doesn't depict the action of the user anymore.

According to UK Mirror, some Facebook users claim that the new reactions are highly inappropriate. The social network rolled out an update last week that transformed the appearance of its six "reactions" buttons, which allow users to respond to posts with a single click.

The "like" button now appears as a scary skeletal thumbs up, the "love" heart has become edible candy, and the "Haha", "Wow", "Sad" and "Angry" faces have become a witch, a ghost, Frankenstein's monster and a pumpkin respectively.

The change is, of course, intended as a bit of light entertainment to mark Halloween, but not everyone is amused.

In fact, some have taken to social media to complain that the new reactions are highly inappropriate for anyone wishing to express genuine emotion.

In particular, some people have been distressed to discover the sad face they used to express grief or condolences has automatically been converted into Frankenstein's monster.

See some reactions below:
Right now on Facebook. I feel sad for people mourning a loss and if your friends react "sad" to the news you see a Frankenstein emoji

I love the seasonal Facebook emoji, because nothing says "I'm so sorry your grandma died" quite like a weeping frankenstein.

Thank you, Facebook. That crying Frankenstein emoji would be a perfect way to tell my friend I'm sorry for her loss.

Shoutout to facebook for making the "sad" emoji a Frankenstein on this, the anniversary of my cousin's untimely death.

I hate Facebook's cutesy Halloween emoji reactions. Here's a sad lobotomized Frankenstein on a post about my friend who died of brain cancer pic.twitter.com/kINl5uowDQ

A friend’s father died and all of the sad face emojis people posted on Facebook are now Frankenstein’s monsters. Not cool Facebook!
